Endurable SSD-Based Read Cache for Improving the Performance of Selective Restore from Deduplication Systems

Deduplication has been commonly used in both enterprise storage systems and cloud storage. To overcome the performance challenge for the selective restore operations of deduplication systems, solid-state-drive-based （i.e., SSD-based） re^d cache cm, be deployed for speeding up by caching popular restore contents dynamically. Unfortunately, frequent data updates induced by classical cache schemes （e.g., LRU and LFU） significantly shorten SSDs＇ lifetime while slowing down I/O processes in SSDs. To address this problem, we propose a new solution -- LOP-Cache to greatly improve tile write durability of SSDs as well as I/O performance by enlarging the proportion of long-term popular （LOP） data among data written into SSD-based cache. LOP-Cache keeps LOP data in the SSD cache for a long time period to decrease the number of cache replacements. Furthermore, it prevents unpopular or unnecessary data in deduplication containers from being written into the SSD cache. We implemented LOP-Cache in a prototype deduplication system to evaluate its pertbrmance. Our experimental results indicate that LOP-Cache shortens the latency of selective restore by an average of 37.3% at the cost of a small SSD-based cache with only 5.56% capacity of the deduplicated data. Importantly, LOP-Cache improves SSDs＇ lifetime by a factor of 9.77. The evidence shows that LOP-Cache offers a cost-efficient SSD-based read cache solution to boost performance of selective restore for deduplication systems.

Ethical decision-making is a unique aspect of human behavior. When confronted with situations that require careful deliberation over multitude of options that have ethical implications, human behavior tends to resolve dilemmas by resorting to a range of heuristics and principles that view the situation from different perspectives. While constraint and utility-driven decision-making strategies are relevant, the incompatibility among these perspectives can invalidate the underlying premises of models of probabilistic utility-based decisions that rely on classic Kolmogorov axioms. In this paper, it is posited that quantum cognition models can provide an alternative and credible representation of human behavior modeling in simulations that involve ethical decision-making.

software agents, modeling and simulation, and Model-Driven engineering (MDE) arc fields with their unique body of knowledge. However, developments in one area can provide new avenues for advancing the methodologies and technical strategies in other fields. This paper examines the synergies among these three fields by highlighting selected challenges in each area and delineating how methods developed in one field can mutually be beneficial. We categorize the ways in which the agent paradigm can contribute to critical activities in MDE, and similarly we describe how domain-specific languages and model transformation strategies can be instrumental in the design, implementation, and management of agent systems. © 2016 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Recent years have seen a proliferation of the use of simulation models in computational science. Most of these models have never been independently replicated by anyone but the original developer. Furthermore, there is a growing credibility gap due to widespread, relaxed attitudes in communication of experiments, models, and validation of simulations used in computational research. We examine various issues and challenges involved in model replication and simulation experiment reproducibility. Model-driven simulation engineering principles and model transformation concepts are adopted as solution strategies to improve replicability of models and reproducibility of experiments. A process model, an architectural framework, and an implementation strategy is introduced to address identified issues in simulation experiment management and model replication.

Agent-supported simulation involves the use of intelligent agents to enhance modeling and simulation (M&S) infrastructures and consists of support by software agents: (1) to provide computer assistance for front-end and/or backend interface functions in M&S environments;(2) to process elements of an M&S study symbolically (for example, for consistency checks and built-in reliability);and (3) to provide cognitive abilities to the elements of an M&S study, such as perception, anticipation, learning or understanding abilities. Regional governments face challenges for economic growth while operating under significant budgetary constraints. Although empirical studies and statistical models are valuable tools for evaluating the impacts of economic policy on such systems, they focus on deterministic representations of system processes while avoiding social and environmental relationships. In this work, we propose economy conceptual model of an agent-based simulation of an innovation ecosystem using the Overview, Design concepts, and Details protocol (ODD). This model exposes several endogenous roles and parameters which are not captured in deterministic representations of such systems and offers a specification of regional innovation systems in terms of social cooperation and competition between populations of investigators.

As the use of computer simulation is increasingly becoming central to scientific enterprise, lack of proper documentation, validation and distribution of models and experiments may hamper reproducibility and hence cause a credibility gap. Building on prior research requires ability to reproduce simulation experiments and to further extend models to address increasingly challenging problems. In this article, we delineate three dimensions of reproducible research. For each dimension, issues, strategies and implications for simulation model development are identified. From a technical infrastructure point of view, we introduce the e-Portfolio concept, which is an ensemble of integrated active documents that interweave published manuscript, computer code, data and scientific workflow specification. From the process point of view, strategies and potential mechanisms are delineated to enable authors, publishers, funding agencies, journals and the broader scientific community to cooperate and establish a sustained model base, simulations, experiments and documentation, so that scientists can build on each other's work and achievements. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Social-web giants - like ***, ***, and *** - are quickly becoming the driving force behind content generation on the web. Because these sites have incredibly large user-bases and content is frequently cross-posted between social-sites, trending topics are often viewed by hundreds of millions of Internet users. The exposure of this content to the digital-mob has had numerous, technically significant consequences - including the emergence of successful, ad-hoc forensic investigations conducted by amateurs online. In this paper, we will present a simple process model that characterizes crowd-sourced digital forensic investigations. Additionally, we will explore the implications of the phenomenon of username reuse, and discuss its role in the context of both formal and informal digital forensics. Finally, we will provide a cost-effective methodology for utilizing crowd-sourcing services to augment the information discovery phase of a formal digital forensic investigation. © 2011 IEEE.
