Using OFDM and space-time coding to achieve asynchronous cooperative diversity has been proposed by Mei et. al. and Shin et al, where orthogonal space-time block codes, Alamouti code in particular, were used at relay nodes. This proposed space-time coding can not achieve the multipath diversity when the channels from nodes to nodes are frequency selective fading. In this paper, we also consider asynchronous cooperative communications where the channels are assumed to be frequency-selective fading. We design high rate distributed space-frequency codes to achieve both full asynchronous cooperative diversity and multipath diversities.

Creating a good quality Adaptive Educational Hypermedia (AEH) system involves a great expenditure of time, effort and money, especially to author the materials in order to implement adaptivity. Moreover, authoring AEH systems is as hard as maintaining them. Furthermore, with the new advances in AEH development, the authored content in a given system can become outdated very rapidly. When the massive overhead in authoring is combined with the possibility of the current AEH system becoming unavailable due to lack of maintenance, providing interoperability of adaptive systems becomes necessary. This paper describes our research on providing interoperability of user models between different AEH systems via a one-to-one conversion between two AEH systems, MOT and WHURLE. Here, we identify the differences and commonalities and address how these influence the efficiency of the conversion of the two systems' user models. Although this conversion is done via simple peer-to-peer interaction, it can be easily extended to make use of semantic web technologies, as for example RDF or XML conversion formats, or web services for user model exchange. Therefore, we consider that our work on feature extractions sets the basis for such conversions for the Web and Semantic Web. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In this paper, we capture the impact of an ARQ scheme in the MAC/LLC layer with a forward error-correcting code on upper-layer packet transmissions over a Markovian channel by examining the performance of a single service data unit which may be either a TCP segment or a UDP packet. We assume that the ACK/NACK delay of ARQ blocks belong to a single service data unit is less than the transmission period of each ARQ block. The performance measures of a single service data unit transmission are derived in terms of the transmission success and failure probabilities given a retransmission time-out value, retransmission timeout probability and the moments of transmission delay. Further, the queueing performance of a service data unit transmitter is also presented by varying average received signal-to-noise ratio, mobile velocity, number of ARQ blocks needed to transmit a single service data unit, number of retransmissions for each ARQ block and error-correcting capability applied to an ARQ block. From numerical examples, renegotiation between a serving base station and a mobile station is needed, when the mobile station is far from the serving base station in order that a service data unit is fragmented into a larger number of ARQ blocks in order to apply high error-correcting capability for each one

The aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of a sensorless control system based on a high-frequency signal injection combined with an inset PM motor. The rotor position of a synchronous permanent magnet (PM) motor with anisotropic rotor can be detected by the control system which superimposes a high-frequency signal to the steady-state stator voltage. The corresponding high-frequency current is modulated by the rotor anisotropy and used to determine the rotor position. These techniques are effective at zero and at low motor speed. Both saturation and cross-coupling have a heavy influence on the correct rotor position detection. Reliability evaluation of power distribution system is very important to both power utilities and customers. It presents the probabilistic number and duration of interruption such as failure rate, SAIDI, SAIFI, and CAIDI. However, it has a fatal weakness at reliability index because of accuracy of failure rate. In this paper, the time-varying failure rate (TFR) of power distribution system equipment is extracted from the recorded failure data of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in Korea. For TFR extraction, it is used that the fault data accumulated by KEPCO during 10 years. The TFR is approximated to bathtub curve using the exponential (random failure) and Weibull (aging failure) distribution function. In addition, Kaplan-Meier estimation is applied to TFR extraction because of incomplete failure data of KEPCO. Finally, probability plot and regression analysis is applied. It is presented that the extracted TFR is more effective and useful than mean failure rate (MFR) through the comparison between TFR and MFR

There are many satellites in orbit using total power microwave radiometers with external calibration targets. Pre- launch and on-orbit calibrations have been developed and applied to ensure accurate measurements over decades. But because of different designs as well as instrument aging effects, subsequent calibration is necessary to improve or maintain measurement accuracy. In-orbit inter-satellite radiometric calibration techniques could provide a long-term, group-wise solution. This paper presents our current research, which analyzes two methods to perform this calibration based upon coincident brightness measurements. In the first approach we build a transfer relationship based on three adjacent frequency measurements and major environmental parameters using radiative transfer model normalization. In the second approach, a linear regression is used among all frequency and both polarization measurements and their transforms. We utilize Radiative transfer models (RTM's) in both methods, and refine them under different environmental conditions and later, we test the RTM models in order to better simulate brightness temperature retrieval before use in building transfer relationships. We validate the two different approaches by comparing external measurements between AMSR on ADEOS-II and TMI on TRMM. Results of calibration comparisons are provided along with accuracy prediction and error source analysis. By pursuing this research, the feasibility of building calibrations between polar-orbit satellites can be established for improved operational and scientific utilization of microwave radiometer measurements.
