The potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) in serving a useful purpose, e.g., supporting communication in paralyzed patients, hinges on the quality of the classification of the brain waves. This paper proposes a novel method to construct a classifier with improved generalization performance. A feature selection method is applied to features calculated from the EEG signals so that unnecessary or redundant features can be removed and only effective features are left for the classification task. Kernel support vector machines (kernel SVM) were used as a classifier and the best combinations of features were searched by backward stepwise selection, i.e., by eliminating unnecessary features one by one, and by evaluating the resulting generalization performance through cross validation. Experiments showed that the generalization performance of the classifier constructed from the best set of features was higher than that of the classifier using all features.

This paper presents a novel and simple approach to reliability analysis of phased-mission systems. The technique presented in this paper transforms a phased-mission system into several non-phased-mission systems, and thus allows each phase to be modeled separately. The mission succeeds as long as every phase successively executes its requirements, and failed component(s) of any phase is(are) repaired so that the system is in a successful state before as well as after it begins the next phase. Alternative mission success scenarios are also readily definable within this context. The benefit of this simplified approach is that it provides a practical implementation for the reliability analysis of phased-mission systems. The different phases of the system are computed independently, and the duration and the structure of the phases are left to the designer or manager. If the requirements of the mission change during execution of the mission (duration of a phase or the sequence of phases), the impact of the change in mission objectives is easily found without recomputing the applicable or operative Markov model. This is due to the fact that all of the reliability analysis data are presented over the entire mission duration consisting for all phases, and the initial and final probabilities can easily be found by examining the output reliability data instead of recomputing the model

The integrated navigation system, specially the system based on GPS and INS, is a leading trend of navigation technology, and some of typical integrated navigation systems have been developed and tested in the past few years (Farrell, 1998). But due to the complex application circumstance, it is difficult to describe the noise statistical property accurately. In this paper, a modified adaptive filter algorithm is presented for INS/GPS integrated navigation system. At first, an improved Kalman filter and H infin robust filter are explicitly represented for INS/GPS integrated navigation system. We consider the pickup and delivery problem with time windows as a general model of the practical transportation problems in automated guided vehicle systems, logistic systems, etc. The problem requires that any paired pickup and delivery locations have to be served by one vehicle and the pickup location has to be scheduled before the corresponding delivery location in the route. In this paper, to search a set of routes close to the optimal one, we propose the autonomous distributed genetic approach based on the search space decomposition for the problem. In this approach, first, the search space is divided into sub-spaces based on the number of customers loaded in each vehicle. Then, GA is applied in each sub-space. In addition, the dynamic separation is applied for an efficient search. The effectiveness of the search space decomposition is evaluated by computational experiments

An EMG-driven arm wrestling robot (AWR) is being developed in our laboratories for the purposes of studying neuromuscular control of arm movements. The AWR arm have 2-DOF, integrated with mechanical arm, elbow/wrist force sensors, servo motor, encoder, 3-D MEMS accelerometer, and USB camera, is used to estimate tension developed by individual muscles based on recorded electromyograms (EMGs). The surface electromyographic signal form the upper limb is sampled from a real player in same conditions. By using the method of wavelet packet transformation (WPT) and auto regressive model (AR), the characteristics of EMG signals can be extracted. Artificial neural network is adopted to estimate the elbow joint torque. The effectiveness of the humanoid algorithm using torque control estimated via WRT and neural network is confirmed by experiments. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design objectives, fundamental components and implementation of our real-time, EMG-driven AWR arm.

Breakdown (BD) characteristics in vacuum are strongly dependent on the electrode surface condition, like the surface roughness etc. Therefore, in order to develop a high voltage vacuum circuit breaker, it is important to optimize the surface treatment process. This paper discusses about the effect of precision-surface-treatment of the electrode on breakdown conditioning characteristics under non-uniform electric field in vacuum. Experimental results reveal that the electrode surface treatment affects the conditioning process, especially the BD voltage and the BD field strength at the initial stage of the conditioning.

The overload control system of anti-warship missiles is researched. The output-redefinition technique is used to eliminate the nonminimum phase characteristics of missile overload output. In order to improve the robustness of the control system in the whole control process, an adaptive global terminal sliding mode (TSM) control method is proposed to control the missile's modified output. With this method, the system states lie in the global TSM at the onset of the motion, hence the reaching phase is removed from the control system. The adaptive controller is applied to estimate the upper bound of the lumped uncertainty. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation example

Clustering is a promising application area for many fields including statistics, pattern recognition, data mining, etc. The effectiveness and efficiency of existing clustering techniques, however, is somewhat limited, owing to the huge amounts data collected in databases. According the theory of fields in physics, a hierarchical clustering method based on data fields is presented. The basic idea is that the field models is introduced to describe the virtual interaction among data objects in data space and the hierarchical partitioning of the original dataset is then performed by iteratively simulating the interaction and movement of the data objects in the fields. Experimental results show that the proposed approach not only enjoys favorite clustering quality and requires no careful parameters tuning, but also has a time complexity approximately linear with respect to the size of dataset.

A missile launch will produce a high temperature jet flow, the high temperature jet flow effects on the design and prime cost for fireproof decking is considered. This work presents an on-line inverse method based on the adaptive input estimation method that combines the finite element scheme to estimate unknown jet flow heat flux. The temperature is measured using a thermocouple at the outer surface of a steel plate. The input estimator develops a recursive relation between the observed residual sequence value with unknown heat flux and a theoretical residual sequence to improve the state estimate accuracy and avoid the divergence problem. A recursive least square estimator is derived that uses the residual innovation sequence to compute the magnitude of the unknown jet flow heat flux. The superior capabilities of the proposed method are analyzed and demonstrated using several typical cases with time varying jet flow heat flux input. The results show that the proposed method has the advantages of stability and good accuracy.
