Development of a feature ranking method based upon the discriminative power of features and unbiased towards classifiers is of interest. We have studied a consensus feature ranking method, based on multiple classifiers, and have shown its superiority to well known statistical ranking methods. In a target environment such as a medical dataset, missing values and an unbalanced distribution of data must be taken into consideration in the ranking and evaluation phases in order to legitimately apply a feature ranking method. In a comparison study, a Performance Index (PI) is proposed that takes into account both the number of features and the number of samples involved in the classification.

The gramian approximation methods have been proposed recently to overcome the high computing costs of classical balanced truncation based reduction methods. But those methods typically gain efficiency by projecting the original system only onto one dominant subspace of the approximate system gramian (for instance using only controllability gramian). This single gramian reduction method can lead to large errors as the subspaces of controllability and observability can be quite different for general interconnects with unsymmetric system matrices. In this paper, we propose a fast balanced truncation method where the system is balanced in terms of two approximate gramians as achieved in the classical balanced truncation method. The novelty of the new method is that we can keep the similar computing costs of the single gramian method. The proposed algorithm is based on a generalized SVD-based balancing scheme such that the dominant subspace of the approximate gramian product can be obtained in a very efficient way without explicitly forming the gramians. Experimental results on a number of published benchmarks show that the proposed method is much more accurate than the single gramian method with similar computing costs.

This paper proposes a method of 3D topological reconstruction for informationally structured space including sensor networks and robot partners for co-existing with people. The informationally structured space realizes the quick update and access of valuable and useful information for both people and robots on real and virtual environments. In this paper, we use distance information and color information measured by 3D distance image sensor and CMOS camera for 3D topological reconstruction. First, we propose an extraction method of objects from the background image based on Hough transform as preprocessing. Next, we propose a method of 3D topological reconstruction based on growing neural gas to construct informationally structured space. Finally, we show experimental results of the proposed method and discuss the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The accuracy and efficiency of cost estimation methodology for web-based application is very important for software development as it would be able to assist the management team to estimate the cost. Furthermore, it will ensure that the development of cost is within the planned budget and provides a fundamental motivation towards the development of web-based application project. The literature review reveals that COCOMO II provides accurate result because more variables are considered including reuse parameter. The parameter is one of the essential variables in estimating the cost in web-based application development. This research investigates the feasibility to combine and implement COCOMO II and expert judgment technique in a tool called WebCost. In estimating a cost, the tool considers all variables in COCOMO II and requires expert judgment to key-in the input of the variables such as project size, project type, cost adjustment factor and cost driven factor. Developed in JAVA, WebCost is proven able to estimate cost and generate its estimation result. The usability evaluation conducted had shown that WebCost is usable when compared with other tools, it has its own advantages. WebCost is evidence suitable for everyone especially the project managers, software practitioners or software engineering student in handling the cost estimation tasks.

This paper proposed an adaptive level set algorithm combining region statistical information for color image segmentation. In this model, we deduce image segmentation model with Maximum a posteriori according to Bayesian theory, and combine it into GAC model. Firstly, construct a speed stop function based on region statistical information which combines region statistical character and Bayesian model. And apply it to image segmentation on color images. Secondly, construct alterable coefficient based on a posteriori of segmented image of inside and outside the curve. It aims to change evolution direction adaptively based on the information of image. Thirdly, eliminate the re-initialization procedure by introducing interior restrict energy term of the Li method. At the same time, simplify the definition of the initial level set function. Experimental results show that this method has the advantages of evolving adaptively and stable numerical solution, and can extract the real edge of object from color image efficiently, so that is an effective image segmentation method.

We have developed a practical urea monitor based on a chemiluminescent (CL) reaction of urea and hypobromous acid produced by electrolysis of sodium bromide (NaBr) for measuring urea concentration in spent dialysate at set intervals. A reagent containing 4×10-2 M hypobromous acid is produced by electrolysis of an electrolyte containing 5.9 M NaBr and 0.2 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Chemiluminescence is emitted by injection of spent hemodialysis fluid (0.11 ml) into the reagent, and the CL-intensity is measured by a photomultiplier tube using the photon counting technique. The CL-intensity is proportional to the 0.9th power of the urea concentration between 7×10-4 and 2×10-2 M. The urea monitor can determine the urea concentration in spent dialysate samples collected from the waste line of a dialyzer, and the time for the intermittent measurements including the cleaning cycle of the reaction chamber is 3 min. The urea concentrations measured by the monitor are in close agreement with those measured by the conventional enzyme colorimetric method using urease for the spent dialysate collected during a hemodialysis treatment, and the correlation coefficient is 0.93. © 2010 the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The approach to development methods which are described in paper allows possibility extension for minimizing costs and widely external hardware industrial control systems utilization. There is described development method of control applications by industrial WinPLC/WinPAC and REX control compiler in comparison to classical development methods that need expensive RT measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. The project is based on specification of development process of designed control schemas of prepared applications to an industrial utilization by direct connection and implementation to the chosen control system WinPLC/WinPAC. Paper deals with a way how to produce a solution for control applications that are prepared, designed and implemented in MATLAB-Simulink to the target platform. The multiplatform control system REX is used as a bridge between MATLAB and target platform.

Traffic congestion is the cause of pollution and economic loss. The Real time traffic state report can alleviate this problem by assisting drivers for route planning and choosing unblocked roads. More traffic information could lead to more accurate route planning and greater awareness of traffic situations and road conditions for drivers. However, investment into sensor infrastructure for small minor roads is rarely available. In this paper, we present a cost efficient approach to compute real time traffic congestion degrees for non-sensor infrastructure roads, such as small minor roads, based on context fusion and context reasoning method. Our framework intends to utilize real time acquirable context instead of relying on traffic sensory data which made our approach suitable for insufficient sensor infrastructure environment. The evaluation throughout several experimentations conducted in Bangkok has proven the feasibility of our approach. Besides, the experimental result indicated that the methodology of our experiment can be used as an alternative cost efficient tool for infrastructure investment decision making. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents an initial attempt at the use of crowd-sourcing for collection of user judgments on spoken dialog systems (SDSs). This is implemented on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), where a Requester can design a human intelligence task (HIT) to be performed by a large number of Workers efficiently and cost-effectively. We describe a design methodology for two types of HITs - the first targets at fast rating of a large number of dialogs regarding some dimensions of the SDS's performance and the second aims to assess the reliability of Workers on MTurk through the variability in ratings across different Workers. A set of approval rules are also designed to control the quality of ratings from MTurk. At the end of the collection work, user judgments for about 8,000 dialogs rated by around 700Workers are collected in 45 days. We observe reasonable consistency between the manual MTurk ratings and an automatic categorization of dialogs in terms of task completion, which partially verifies the reliability of the approved ratings from MTurk. From the second type of HITs, we also observe moderate inter-rater agreement for ratings in task completion which provides support for the utilization of MTurk as a judgments collection platform. Further research on the exploration of SDS evaluation models could be developed based on the collected corpus.
