Diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) forecasts are critical for adopting solar photovoltaic technology. Yet, they can lack reliability given the limited and uncertain meteorological data available for desert areas. This research develops a new sine cosine dipper throated optimization (SCDTO) technique, targeting DHI prediction even given such data constraints. SCDTO uniquely hybridizes sine cosine metaheuristics, adept at exploration, with dipper throat optimization, providing focused exploitation. This hybridization aims to create a robust ensemble model capable of delivering reliable DHI predictions despite climatic uncertainty. The ensemble model, employing various input combinations, was rigorously evaluated across multiple meteorological stations. The SCDTO algorithm exhibited remarkable performance improvements, yielding substantial reductions exceeding 93% in root mean squared error and 98% in mean absolute error at key stations in Morocco, including Tan-Tan, Zagora, Erfoud, and Oujda. Comparative analyses against established optimization algorithms consistently underscored the superior predictive capabilities of SCDTO. Visualizations, including box plots and histograms, demonstrated SCDTO’s efficacy in minimizing prediction errors, particularly for Tan-Tan, Zagora, and Erfoud stations. Also, statistical validation through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) further affirmed the significance of the proposed SCDTO method. Therefore, this hybrid metaheuristic optimization enables more accurate DHI predictions from limited meteorological data. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

The integration of big data with cutting-edge technologies like IoT and Cloud Computing has profoundly influenced various aspects of modern life, including everyday service processes. To facilitate data-driven decision-making, big data analytics—focused on identifying patterns, trends, and correlations in large data sets—is indispensable. While traditional statistical techniques are useful, new tools and infrastructures such as Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL are essential to tackle big data challenges. However, modifying the existing environment can be impractical, especially in production settings, due to the need for significant investment and specialized expertise. This article presents a novel computational paradigm that adds a decision-making layer atop existing systems for data analysis, eliminating the need to alter the environment. The approach treats the current information system as a data lake and introduces a new data recovery layer through web services, drawing inspiration from big data technologies like MapReduce. This system offers the advantage of being modular, reusable, and universally compatible, making it an independent decisional framework that can work with any information system or data source. © 2023 IEEE.

In edge computing environment, edge servers are generally more closer to edge devices which can guarantee time sensitive tasks be completed under their strict requirements. However, with the rapid increase of edge devices and the limited computing resources of edge servers, this guarantee is becoming more and more difficult. In this paper, by using two physical layer techniques, we try to give communication tasks more opportunities for executing under edge computing environment. In specific words, we propose a priority task scheduling scheme based on coherent beamforming (CB) technique and successive interference cancellation(SIC) technique. CB technique give edge devices the chance to be transmitted to distant edge servers, and SIC technique give communication tasks more chance to be received by edge servers. However, these two techniques need some strict conditions for realizing, and if we consider the computing work and the communicating work simultaneously, the problem will become very complex. We first build the system model and analyze it, and show the model a NP-hard problem and cannot be solved directly. Then in our algorithm, we first determine the task transmission of each time slot in turn, and set the fitness threshold so that each task can select the most suitable edge server. After tasks arrive at servers, we insert them into task queues according to their priorities. In simulations, we compare our scheme with other three schemes. Simulation results show that our scheme can improve the task completion rate and reduce completion delay. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper is based on elastic wave propagation and six component seismic detection methods to detect underwater targets, which makes up for the shortcomings of traditional underwater acoustic passive detection methods that cannot effectively detect targets in near shallow water. The implementation of this article requires four steps: firstly, using a self-developed six component seismometer to collect seismic signals excited by the target;Secondly, screen out abnormal six component seismic signals;Step 3: Data preprocessing such as denoising and azimuth correction;Finally, the target direction finding is achieved by comprehensively utilizing rotational and translational seismic signals. Through multiple experiments, it can be concluded that: (1) using a six component seismic sensor can detect the six component seismic signal excited by the target, and the lower the detection frequency band, the easier it is to detect the low-frequency signal excited by the target;(2) It can be clearly observed in the time-frequency domain that moving targets have a close far passing characteristic;(3) The energy of the six component seismic signal has a certain proportional relationship with the target distance. The closer the target distance is, the greater the energy of the excited six component seismic signal;(4) Six component seismic signals can be used to achieve target detection and positioning. Compared to traditional seismic detection, six component seismic detection has a higher ability and is an important supplement to traditional underwater acoustic detection methods. This article first discovered that underwater moving targets not only generate seismic translational signals, but also contain low-frequency rotational seismic signals. In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.

ProSy: API-Based Synthesis with Probabilistic Model

Program synthesis is an exciting topic that desires to generate programs satisfying user intent automatically. But in most cases, only small programs for simple or domain-specific tasks can be synthesized. The major obstacle of synthesis lies in the huge search space. A common practice in addressing this problem is using a domain-specific language, while many approaches still wish to synthesize programs in general programming languages. With the rapid growth of reusable libraries, component-based synthesis provides a promising way, such as synthesizing Java programs which are only composed of APIs (application programming interfaces). However, the efficiency of searching for proper solutions for complex tasks is still a challenge. Given an unfamiliar programming task, programmers would search for API usage knowledge from various coding resources to reduce the search space. Considering this, we propose a novel approach named ProSy to synthesize API-based programs in Java. The key novelty is to retrieve related knowledge from Javadoc and Stack Overflow and then construct a probabilistic reachability graph. It assigns higher probabilities to APIs that are more likely to be used in implementing the given task. In the synthesis process, the program sketch with a higher probability will be considered first;thus, the number of explored reachable paths would be decreased. Some extension and optimization strategies are further studied in the paper. We implement our approach and conduct several experiments on it. We compare ProSy with SyPet and other state-of-the-art API-based synthesis approaches. The experimental results show that ProSy reduces the synthesis time of SyPet by up to 80%.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), a leading cause of global mortality, are intricately linked to arterial stiffness, a key factor in cardiovascular health. Non-invasive assessment of arterial stiffness, particularly through Carotid-to-femoral Pulse Wave Velocity (cf-PWV) – the gold standard in this field – is vital for early detection and management of CVDs. This study introduces a novel approach, utilizing photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal spectrograms as inputs for deep learning models to estimate cf-PWV, a significant advancement over traditional methods. Employing a modified ResNet-18 architecture, we analyze PPG signals from digital, radial, and brachial arteries of a simulated dataset of 4374 healthy adults. Our methodology's innovation lies in its direct use of finely tuned spectrogram images, bypassing the complex feature extraction processes. This approach achieved R 2 (correlation coefficient) values of up to 0.9902 for the digital artery, 0.9898 for the radial artery, and 0.9825 for the brachial artery, coupled with significantly lower Mean Absolute Percentage Errors (MAPE) of approximately 1.61% for the digital, 1.87% for the radial, and 2.08% for the brachial artery. These findings highlight the efficacy of PPG spectrograms, especially from the digital artery, in providing an accurate, user-friendly, and non-invasive method for cf-PWV estimation, thereby enhancing the capabilities of non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostics.

Robotics paired with computer vision are widely used in precision agriculture. Simulations are critical for safety and performance estimation by verifying their routine in a virtual world before real-world testing and deployment. However, many simulators used in agricultural robots lack photorealism in their virtual worlds compared to the real world. We implemented Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and the Robot Operating System (ROS) to develop a robot simulator tailored to agricultural tasks and synthetic data generation with RGB, segmentation, and depth images. We designed a method for assigning multiple segmentation labels within a single plant mesh. We experimented with a semi-spherical routine for two robot arms to perform 3D point cloud reconstruction across 10 plant assets. We showed our simulator produces much more accurate segmentation images and reconstruction compared to existing UE5 solutions. We extend our results with Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) reconstructions. The research on nested named entity recognition (NER) is conducive to providing richer semantic representations and capturing the nested structure among entities, which is crucial for the execution of downstream tasks. This paper aims to summarise the nested NER methods that have been combined with emerging technologies in recent years. We summarise the nested NER methods that are integrated with emerging technologies from three dimensions: model, framework, and data. Additionally, we explore the research progress of nested NER in two scenarios: cross-lingual modality and multi-modal in different modalities. Furthermore, we discuss the practical applications of NER technology in five fields: biomedicine, justice, finance, media, and e-commerce. Through this review, we can clearly see the development trends of nested NER technology under emerging technologies and different modalities, as well as its broad application prospects in various fields. This provides a reference for future exploration directions in nested NER. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
