Nonparametric statistics inspired similarity measure for accuracy in collaborative filtering

Similarity computation is especially significant in collaborative filtering algorithms. In the existed literatures or large recommender systems, researchers generally use cosine similarity or Pearson correlation coefficient to compute the similarities. However, on one hand, both two measures are more applicable in linear space while the ratings cannot linearly reflect users' interest intensity. On the other hand, different systems have different rating restricts, so it's unreasonable to treat varied systems with the same computation method. In this work, inspired by nonparametric statistics, a sound memory-based method with a novel similarity measure is proposed to eliminate the affection of rating distributions and system diversities on similarity computation. Experiments based on Jester are set to evaluate the performance of the approach. And the highly competitive results show that our approach is able to significantly improve the recommendation quality. © 2013 Binary information Press.

A distributed computational cognitive model for object recognition

Based on cognitive functionalities in human vision processing, we propose a computational cognitive model for object recognition with detailed algorithmic descriptions. The contribution of this paper is of two folds. Firstly, we present a systematic review on psychological and neurophysiological studies, which provide collective evidence for a distributed representation of 3D objects in the human brain. Secondly, we present a computational model which simulates the distributed mechanism of object vision pathway. Experimental results show that the presented computational cognitive model outperforms five representative 3D object recognition algorithms in computer science research.

There have been many incidents of IP prefix hijacking by BGP protocol in the Internet. Attacks may hijack victim's address space to disrupt network services or perpetrate malicious activities such as spamming and DoS attacks without disclosing identity. The relation between network topology and prefix hijacking influence is presented for all sorts of hijacking events in different Internet layers. The impaction parameter is analyzed for typical prefix hijacking events in different layers. A large Internet emulation environment is constructed and the attack impaction of IP prefix hijacking events are evaluated. The results assert that the hierarchical nature of network influences the prefix hijacking greatly. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This article reports on a search for dark matter pair production in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, using data from 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decay of the Higgs boson is reconstructed as a high-momentum bb¯ system with either a pair of small-radius jets, or a single large-radius jet with substructure. The observed data are found to be consistent with the expected Standard Model backgrounds. Model-independent upper limits are placed on the visible cross sections for events with a Higgs boson decaying into bb¯ and large missing transverse momentum with thresholds ranging from 150 to 400 GeV. Results are interpreted using a simplified model with a Z′ gauge boson decaying into different Higgs bosons predicted in a two-Higgs-doublet model, of which the heavy pseudoscalar Higgs decays into a pair of dark matter particles. Exclusion limits are also presented for the mass scales of various effective field theory operators that describe the interaction between dark matter particles and the Higgs boson.

We propose a continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocol, in which detection is conducted by an untrusted third party. Our protocol can defend all detector side channels, which seriously threaten the security of a practical CV QKD system. Its security analysis against arbitrary collective attacks is derived based on the fact that the entanglement-based scheme of CV-MDI QKD is equivalent to the conventional CV QKD with coherent states and heterodyne detection. We find that the maximal total transmission distance is achieved by setting the untrusted third party close to one of the legitimate users. Furthermore, an alternate detection scheme, a special application of CV-MDI QKD, is proposed to enhance the security of the standard CV QKD system.

The global avalanche characteristics （the sum- of-squares indicator and the absolute indicator） measure the overall avalanche characteristics of a cryptographic Boolean function. Sung et al. （1999） gave the lower bound on the sum- of-squares indicator for a balanced Boolean function satisfy- ing the propagation criterion with respect to some vectors. In this paper, if balanced Boolean functions satisfy the propaga- tion criterion with respect to some vectors, we give three nec- essary and sufficient conditions on the auto-correlation distri- bution of these functions reaching the minimum the bound on the sum-of-squares indicator. And we also find all Boolean functions with 3-variable, 4-variable, and 5-variable reaching the minimum the bound on the sum-of-squares indicator.

The introduction of device-to-device (D2D) into cellular networks poses many new challenges in the resource allocation design due to the co-channel interference caused by spectrum reuse and limited battery life of user equipments (UEs). In this paper, we propose a distributed interference-aware energy-efficient resource allocation algorithm to maximize each UE's energy efficiency (EE) subject to its specific quality of service (QoS) and maximum transmission power constraints. We model the resource allocation problem as a noncooperative game, in which each player is self-interested and wants to maximize its own EE. The formulated EE maximization problem is a non-convex problem and is transformed into a convex optimization problem by exploiting the properties of the nonlinear fractional programming. An iterative optimization algorithm is proposed and verified through computer simulations.

The combination of energy harvesting and large-scale multiple antenna technologies provides a promising solution for improving the energy efficiency (EE) by exploiting renewable energy sources and reducing the transmission power per user and per antenna. However, the introduction of energy harvesting capabilities into large-scale multiple antenna systems poses many new challenges for energy-efficient system design due to the intermittent characteristics of renewable energy sources and limited battery capacity. Furthermore, the total manufacture cost and the sum power of a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains can not be ignored, and it would be impractical to use all the antennas for transmission. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient antenna selection and power allocation algorithm to maximize the EE subject to the constraint of user's quality of service (QoS). An iterative offline optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex EE optimization problem by exploiting the properties of nonlinear fractional programming. The relationships among maximum EE, selected antenna number, battery capacity, and EE-SE tradeoff are analyzed and verified through computer simulations.

Due to the presence of intermodulation products, a nonlinear system driven by a band pass signal will generate at its output a set of undesired signal bands. When detecting such signals using subsampling, one has to take into consideration these distortions in order to successfully down convert the signal of interest. Even though we are only interested in one band, the available spectrum configuration requires the use of multiband subsampling theory which leads to very tight constraint on the possible subsampling frequency ranges. In this paper a modified version of the multiband subsampling algorithm is presented. This proposed solution is more adapted to nonlinear systems and helps relax the constraints on sampling frequency.

Reliability is an important software trustworthy attribute. But most existent reliability model don't consider the severity degree of software fault, so traditional software reliability model can't reflect the trustworthiness of software. Based on the analysis of typical J-M reliability growth model, this paper modifies some of the model assumptions and classifies the software faults. Besides, this paper presents a new method based on weight to calculate the degree of software reliability. Finally, according to the different of frequency of software faults, a practical reliability prediction method is proposed and the experiment results shows that the improved model has a better forecast accuracy.
