Image inpainting via Smooth Tucker decomposition and Low-rank Hankel constraint

Image inpainting, aiming at exactly recovering missing pixels from partially observed entries, is typically an ill-posed problem. As a powerful constraint, low-rank priors have been widely applied in image inpainting to transform such problems into well-posed ones. However, the low-rank assumption of original visual data is only in an approximate mode, which in turn results in suboptimal recovery of fine-grained details, particularly when the missing rate is extremely high. Moreover, a single prior cannot faithfully capture the complex texture structure of an image. In this paper, we propose a joint usage of Smooth Tucker decomposition and Low-rank Hankel constraint (STLH) for image inpainting, which enables simultaneous capturing of the global low-rankness and local piecewise smoothness. Specifically, based on the Hankelization operation, the original image is mapped to a high-order structure for capturing more spatial and spectral information. By employing Tucker decomposition for optimizing the Hankel tensor and simultaneously applying Discrete Total Variation (DTV) to the Tucker factors, sharper edges are generated and better isotropic properties are enhanced. Moreover, to approximate the essential rank of the Tucker decomposition and avoid facing the uncertainty problem of the upper-rank limit, a reverse strategy is adopted to approximate the true rank of the Tucker decomposition. Finally, the overall image inpainting model is optimized by the well-known alternate least squares (ALS) algorithm. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance both quantitatively and qualitatively. Particularly, in the extreme case with 99% pixels missed, the results from STLH are averagely ahead of others at least 0.9dB in terms of PSNR values. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

information Extraction (IE), aiming to extract structured information from unstructured natural language texts, can significantly benefit from pre-trained language models. However, existing pre-training methods solely focus on exploiting the textual knowledge, relying extensively on annotated large-scale datasets, which is labor-intensive and thus limits the scalability and versatility of the resulting models. To address these issues, we propose SKIE, a novel pre-training framework tailored for IE that integrates structural semantic knowledge via contrastive learning, effectively alleviating the annotation burden. Specifically, SKIE utilizes Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) as a low-cost supervision source to boost model performance without human intervention. By enhancing the topology of AMR graphs, SKIE derives high-quality cohesive subgraphs as additional training samples, providing diverse multi-level structural semantic knowledge. Furthermore, SKIE refines the graph encoder to better capture cohesive information and edge relation information, thereby improving the pre-training efficacy. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that SKIE outperforms state-of-the-art baselines across multiple IE tasks and showcases exceptional performance in few-shot and zero-shot settings. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Ultra-low power MoS2 optoelectronic synapse with wavelength sensitivity for color target recognition

Optoelectronic synapses that integrate visual perception and pre-processing hold significant potential for neuromorphic vision systems（NVSs）. However, due to a lack of wavelength sensitivity, existing NVS mainly focuses on gray-scale image processing, making it challenging to recognize color images. Additionally, the high power consumption of optoelectronic synapses, compared to the 10 fJ energy consumption of biological synapses, limits their broader application. To address these challenges, an energy-efficient NVS capable of color target recognition in a noisy environment was developed,utilizing a MoS2optoelectronic synapse with wavelength sensitivity. Benefiting from the distinct photon capture capabilities of 450, 535, and 650 nm light, the optoelectronic synapse exhibits wavelength-dependent synaptic plasticity, including excitatory postsynaptic current（EPSC）, paired-pulse facilitation（PPF）, and long-term plasticity（LTP）. These properties can effectively mimic the visual memory and color discrimination functions of the human vision system. Results demonstrate that the NVS, based on MoS2optoelectronic synapses, can eliminate the color noise at the sensor level, increasing color image recognition accuracy from 50% to 90%. Importantly, the optoelectronic synapse operates at a low voltage spike of0.0005 V, consuming only 0.075 fJ per spike, surpassing the energy efficiency of both existing optoelectronic and biological synapses. This ultra-low power, color-sensitive device eliminates the need for color filters and offers great promise for future deployment in filter-free NVS.

Attention mechanism has been a successful method for multimodal affective analysis in recent years. Despite the advances, several significant challenges remain in fusing language and its nonverbal context information. One is to generate sparse attention coefficients associated with acoustic and visual modalities, which helps locate critical emotional se-mantics. The other is fusing complementary cross‐modal representation to construct optimal salient feature combinations of multiple modalities. A Conditional Transformer Fusion Network is proposed to handle these problems. Firstly, the authors equip the transformer module with CNN layers to enhance the detection of subtle signal patterns in nonverbal sequences. Secondly, sentiment words are utilised as context conditions to guide the computation of cross‐modal attention. As a result, the located nonverbal fea-tures are not only salient but also complementary to sentiment words directly. Experi-mental results show that the authors’ method achieves state‐of‐the‐art performance on several multimodal affective analysis datasets.

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging distributed machine learning paradigm that enables participants to cooperatively train learning tasks without revealing the raw data. However, the distributed nature of FL makes it susceptible to poisoning attacks, especially when the local data of participants are non-independent and identically diatributed (non-IID). Although several defense methods have been proposed to mitigate poisoning attacks, their effectiveness is limited by the specific assumptions about the data distribution. In this work, we propose a new defense strategy, FedAPA (Federated Prototype Learning Against Poisoning Attacks). Specifically, we use abstract class prototypes to communicate between the clients and server, thus effectively alleviating the impact of non-IID data. Moreover, we propose a new abnormal client detection method that aims to mitigate the impact of malicious clients while distinguishing between malicious and benign clients, thereby effectively defending against poisoning attacks. Extensive experiments on different datasets show that FedAPA can effectively resist the poisoning attacks under various data distributions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Freshness of information is a critical issue for real-time Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), due to their high flexibility and low cost, are widely deployed in time-sensitive IoT scenarios. In this article, we explore the trajectory planning problem in rechargeable-UAV-aided IoT Networks. To accurately measure the freshness of information, we introduce Age of information (AoI) and Age of Synchronization (AoS). AoI is utilized to plan the UAVs' trajectories for accessing sensors (SNs) and reduce the average AoS of the system. UAVs can recharge at charging stations to maintain energy above a certain threshold. We formulate a Markov decision process with the objective of minimizing the average AoS under the energy constraint. To adjust the dynamic environment, we propose a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning method to jointly optimize the UAVs' flight trajectories and battery recharging. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the total average AoS under the energy constraint. © 2024 IEEE.

Ecosystems are undergoing unprecedented persistent deterioration due to unsustainable anthropogenic human activities,such as overfishing and deforestation,and the effects of such damage on ecological stability are *** recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies on regime shifts and tipping points,theoretical tools for understanding the extinction chain,which is the sequence of species extinctions resulting from overexploitation,are still lacking,especially for large-scale nonlinear networked *** this study,we developed a mathematical tool to predict regime shifts and extinction chains in ecosystems under multiple exploitation situations and verified it in 26 real-world mutualistic networks of various sizes and *** discovered five phases during the exploitation process:safe,partial extinction,bistable,tristable,and collapse,which enabled the optimal design of restoration strategies for degraded or collapsed *** validated our approach using a 20-year dataset from an eelgrass restoration ***,we also found a specific region in the diagram spanning exploitation rates and competition intensities,where exploiting more species helps increase *** computational tool provides insights into harvesting,fishing,exploitation,or deforestation plans while conserving or restoring the biodiversity of mutualistic ecosystems.

In information Centric Networking(ICN)where content is the object of exchange,in-network caching is a unique functional feature with the ability to handle data storage and distribution in remote sensing satellite *** up cache space at any node enables users to access data nearby,thus relieving the processing pressure on the ***,the existing caching strategies still suffer from the lack of global planning of cache contents and low utilization of cache resources due to the lack of fine-grained division of cache *** address the issues mentioned,a cooperative caching strategy(CSTL)for remote sensing satellite networks based on a two-layer caching model is *** two-layer caching model is constructed by setting up separate cache spaces in the satellite network and the ground *** caching of popular contents in the region at the ground station to reduce the access delay of users.A content classification method based on hierarchical division is proposed in the satellite network,and differential probabilistic caching is employed for different levels of *** cached content is also dynamically adjusted by analyzing the subsequent changes in the popularity of the cached *** the two-layer caching model,ground stations and satellite networks collaboratively cache to achieve global planning of cache contents,rationalize the utilization of cache resources,and reduce the propagation delay of remote sensing *** results show that the CSTL strategy not only has a high cache hit ratio compared with other caching strategies but also effectively reduces user request delay and server load,which satisfies the timeliness requirement of remote sensing data transmission.
