Investigation of GaN-based dual-wavelength light-emitting diodes with p-type barriers and vertically stacked quantum wells

Designs of p-doped in quantum well （QW） barriers and specific number of vertically stacked QWs are proposed to improve the optical performance of GaN-based dual-wavelength light-emitting diodes （LEDs）. Emission spectra, carrier concentration, electron current density, and internal quantum efficiency （IQE） are studied numerically. Simulation results show that the efficiency droop and the spectrum intensity at the large current injection are improved markedly by using the proposed design. Compared with the conventional LEDs, the uniform spectrum intensity of dual-wavelength luminescence is realized when a specific number of vertically stacked QWs is adopted. Suppression of electron leakage current and the promotion of hole injection efficiency could be one of the main reasons for these improvements.

The lack of labeled training data is a common issue in many machine learning applications. Semi-supervised learning addresses this issue by self-labeling unlabelled examples. Transfer learning tackles it from a different way: borrow labeled examples from a different but related domain (source domain) by assigning weights to those examples based on their suitability on the new domain (target domain). However, it is quite challenging to figure out the suitability. In this paper, we propose a different way for utilizing the labeled examples from source domain. That is, we use them only for labelling the unlabelled examples in the target domain. In this self-labelling, we use the idea of Tri-training. We call our new algorithm: TriTransfer. In TriTransfer, three initial classifiers are generated from the source data and the originally labeled data in the target domain, and an unlabeled example is labeled and added to the labeled data for a classifier if other two classifiers agree on its label. After an expanded labeled data set is obtained, we re-train the classifier. We repeat this process until no more change can be made. At the end, the final classifier, which is a weighted combination of the three classifiers, is output. We conduct an extensive empirical study on 34 UCI datasets, which shows that TriTransfer performs better than the state-of-art algorithms TransferBoost, Tritraining, and NaiveBayes.

Fault-tolerant hamiltonicity of a class of faulty hexagonal honeycomb tori

The performance of a parallel and distributed system heavily depends on the effectiveness of the underlying interconnection network. Honeycomb networks are promising candidates for interconnection networks in parallel and distributed applications. This paper addresses the hamiltonicity of a hexagonal honeycomb torus (HHT) with a pair of faulty nodes lying diagonally on a cycle of length 6. We show that such a faulty HHT is hamiltonian by presenting a systematic method for constructing a fault-free hamiltonian cycle. This result reveals another appealing fault-tolerant feature of HHTs.

Unsupervised distributed novelty detection on scientific simulation data

Novelty detection has recently become an important problem in scientific data mining applications. Very often, the large scale simulation data set from which novel events have to be found are located at multiple local machines and cannot be merged due to communication overhead and computation inefficient. In this paper, a novel general framework for distributed novelty detection on simulation mesh data is proposed. The proposed method consists of three steps: (i) building local models from all distributed local machines using unsupervised novelty detection methods, (ii) evaluating local models' quality, and (iii) sharing all local rare events and local models' results and considering both quality and diversity of unsupervised models to detect novel events in a global view. Experiment performed on the LARED-P dataset which simulate the interaction between laser and plasma has shown the proposed method achieved comparable or even slightly better performance than the global novelty detection algorithm applied on the dataset obtained when all distributed datasets were merged. With the rapid development of computer technology, IT hardware price continues to decrease. Equipment is no longer important, while data is becoming increasingly vital. Cloud backup service is ideally suitable for those who wish to provide valuable data backup solution and hold data safely beyond data center. In this paper the development of cloud backup technology is illustrated. Compared with conventional backup software, the advantages of cloud backup technology and its challenges are analyzed. Combined with cloud backup service platform, B-Cloud, the cloud backup service mechanism is introduced. Moreover, it makes a simple conjecture on the future development of cloud backup technology. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Efficient routing strategies in scale-free networks with limited bandwidth

We study the traffic dynamics in complex networks where each link is assigned a limited and identical bandwidth. Although the first-in–first-out (FIFO) queuing rule is widely applied in the routing protocol of information packets, here we argue that if we drop this rule, the overall throughput of the network can be remarkably enhanced. We propose some efficient routing strategies that do not strictly obey the FIFO rule. Compared to the routine shortest-path strategy, throughput for both Barabási-Albert (BA) networks and the Internet can be improved by a factor of more than five. We calculate the theoretical limitation of the throughput. In BA networks, our proposed strategy can achieve 88% of the theoretical optimum, yet for the Internet, it is about 12%, implying that we still have a huge space to further improve the routing strategy for the Internet. Finally, we discuss possibly promising ways to design more efficient routing strategies for the Internet.

This paper presents an optimistic fair exchange protocol based on public verifiable secret sharing for e-procurement applications in Peer-2-Peer networks. According to the decentralized feature of such a network, a distributed third party is designed to guarantee the fairness of exchange. Comparing to traditional trusted third party, this distributed third party is not fixed but dynamically selected by the players of exchange. This scheme can effectively remove the risk of single point of failure and defend Distributed Denial of Service. The concrete protocol is elaborated in this paper. The protocol analysis shows that the protocol guarantees strong fairness with up to one-half malicious peers in distributed third party. © 2010 IEEE.
