Many new services have emerged to realize ubiquitous computing environments, owing to the increasing supply of mobile devices and more widespread Internet and wireless network facilities. This paper introduces the U-Campus (Ubiquitous computing for Campus) service. This study has been conducted through interdisciplinary research by four participating departments. The U-Campus Project is part of the UTOPIA project (Ubiquitous computing TOwn Project: Intelligent context Awareness), which covers town- and city-wide environments. Currently, a test bed for U-Campus has been constructed to support various services such as U-Profile, U-Messaging and U-Campus Tour Guide services. Students, professors, school staffs, and campus visitors can easily access the various available campus services by using image-based sensors and mobile devices such as CDMA cellular phones or WiFi smart phones. The major purpose of this research is to provide a context-aware U-Campus environment to users by utilizing sensors and mobile devices currently available in the public sector and the marketplace.

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial Engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

In this paper we consider a method for finding several eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of large-scale generalized eigenvalue problems. In this method, a small matrix pencil that has only the desired eigenvalues is derived using complex moments obtained via numerical integration. Since the process to derive the moments can be performed in parallel and we do not need to exchange data between processes, the presented method is suitable for master-worker programming models. We have implemented and tested the proposed method in a grid RPC (remote procedure call) system. Numerical examples illustrate the properties of our approach. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. One of the main factors that impede the practice of the telemedicine is not the lack of new technologies for the communication, but the lack of studies on the use of the technology already installed in the distant areas, in way to be used of a rational way. The objective of the telemedicine is to provide help to the cares with the health with quality the distant areas of the great attendance centers. Therefore, it cannot ignore the fact that these areas do not make use of point technologies for communication. Then, it is justified the need to accomplish studies that facilitate the practice of the independent telemedicine of the installed technology. Then, the objective of this work is to use as pilot an unit of remote health, contributing with a support system that allows the practice of the telemedicine using the technology of available transmission in the respective place, avoiding that the factor cost is a barrier for the telemedicine projects and can begin an improvement process in the quality of the attendance in units of distant health of the great centers of medical attendance.

This paper describes an experimental stereo vision based motion planning system for humanoid robots. The goal is to automatically generate arm trajectories that avoid obstacles in unknown environments from high-level task commands. Our system consists of three components: 1) environment sensing using stereo vision with disparity map generation and online consistency checking, 2) probabilistic mesh modeling in order to accumulate continuous vision input, and 3) motion planning for the robot arm using RRTs (Rapidly exploring Random Trees). We demonstrate results from experiments using an implementation designed for the humanoid robot H7.

We present a static analysis that estimates reusable memory cells and a source-level transformation that adds explicit memory-reuse commands into the program text. For benchmark ML programs, our analysis and transformation achieves the memory reuse ratio from 5.2% to 91.3%. The small-ratio cases are for programs that have too prevalent sharings among memory cells. For other cases, our experimental results are encouraging in terms of accuracy and cost. Major features of our analysis are: (1) poly-variant analysis of functions by parameterization for the argument heap cells; (2) use of multiset formulas in expressing the sharings and partitionings of heap cells; (3) deallocations conditioned by dynamic flags that are passed as extra arguments to functions; (4) individual heap cell as the granularity of explicit memory-free. Our analysis and transformation is fully automatic.

Due to a widely use of XML language in various application domains, a well-established mechanism for the definition and enforcement of security controls on specific accesses to XML documents is demanded, in order to ensure that only authorized entities can perform certain actions on the protected data. The proposed rule-based, declarative approach supports definition of (possibly implicit and complex) authorization rules on particular nodes within a document as well as enforcement of multiple user-defined policies, specifying selected mechanisms to resolve conflicts or to apply default authorization. Moreover, by founded on both RDF and XDD theory, the developed approach yields a simple yet flexible and interchangeable XML access control model with well-defined declarative semantics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper presents our experiments for integrating OMG MIOP (Mullicast Inter-ORB Protocol) specifications into a CORBA ORB. We proposed an integration model which allows the coexistence of two different protocol stacks (IIOP/TCP/IP and MIOP/UDP/IP multicast), making possible a large spectrum of middleware support for distributed objects communication. That integration model is discussed in this paper, giving evidence of the compatibility of our approach with the CORBA specifications. We also do some considerations about the implementation of this model in a CORBA compliant ORB. © 2003 IEEE.
