In the absence of systematic techniques to detect the existence of computer viruses, preventing suspicious software from entering the system at the initial point of entry appears to be the best method to protect computing resources against attacks of computer viruses. Currently, software is distributed primarily by diskettes instead of online transmission. Diskettes are more susceptible to modification and masquerading while on-line transmission usually follows proper user/message authentication. A software authentication system is proposed which does not require a mutually trusted center of both software vendors and users, or users' interaction with any key center. Vendors assume responsibility by signing released software and users verify the authenticity of received software before using it. Through such an authentication process, users eliminate the risk of running “unlicensed” or modified programs, thus eliminating the possibility of virus infections.

The authors describe an exploratory study performed to compare three different interface styles for ad hoc query to a database. Subjects with wide-ranging computer experience performed queries of varying difficulty using either an artificial, a graphical, or a natural language interface. All three interfaces were commercial products. The study revealed strengths and weaknesses of each interface and showed that interaction with the natural language interface was qualitatively different than interaction with either the graphical or artificial language systems.< >

Processor failures not leading to a network partition are considered, and the issue of computing associative functions in spite of processor failures is addressed. An intuitive and fundamental result formally proved is that failure detection and computing associative functions are equivalent in faulty networks: one can be performed if and only if the other can be performed. Protocols and impossibility results in various system models are presented in the context of computing associative functions and solving topological problems.< >

Data acquired for object reproduction by laser or stereovision scanning processes are often over-determined. This causes problems in manufacturing processes, for example, NC tool path generation. Data reduction is a sensible solution to such problems. A heuristic method to reduce the data points with the user given tolerance is presented.

Captain Vinroot is now employed by PRC Inc. and serves as technical director for the Advanced Technology Division in Crystal City Va. Jeffery G. Ornergraduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield
Ohio in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and earned a master's of science degree in business from The American University in Washington D.C. in 1982. He has ten years of professional experience with the Naval Sea Systems Command in positions with responsibilities for logistic support planning policy and delivery computer-aided acquisition and logistic support and Fleet Modernization Program (FMP) and ship construction issues. He was a key player in establishing the current FMP integrated logistic support (ILS) process and in implementing of the Ships' Configuration and Logistic Support Information System (SCLSIS). His current position as Fleet Logistic Support Branch head for the Surface Combatant Program includes responsibility for logistic support and management of ship configuration and logistic data for all surface combatant ships (except for Aegis ships). USS Ingraham (FFG-61) is the prototype ship for NavSea's Advanced Technical Information System (ATIS). ATIS is a digital technical library, which holds on optical disks the ship's 2,000 technical manuals and 73,000 drawing sheets. It contains a detailed ship's configuration index (derived from SCLSIS) to lead the user to the proper drawing or manual, and it replaces the ship's aperture cards and the second (library) copy of the technical manuals. ATIS, and the data standards established and tested through ATIS development, will be the technical library portion of micro-SNAP and SNAP III. It also forms an important part of NavSea's plans to utilize EDMICS data. This paper describes the goals and technical concepts behind the development of ATIS. Problems encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned are detailed. Special attention was paid to the application of the computer Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) standards, problems caused by conflicts and ambiguities in those standards, the standards. Original program goals are compared with actual operational experiences. Plans for future expansion are outlined, including applications of this technology in the availability planning and execution process. A comparison is developed among the various methods of optical imaging and their costs and benefits.

The SA'AR-5 Corvette program is the first major warship construction to be entirely accomplished using a 3-dimensional, interference checked computer based design. This paper discusses the organization and approach used to create the design models which form the basis for interference checking as well as the source of extracted production data. The design or product model is the nucleus of the computer data base that defines the configuration of the entire ship. The data base includes geometry, weight, and material, as well as production control data. The ability of the computer to link such diverse information is the key to maintaining configuration control during the course of the design and construction. The ease with which formatted manufacturing data (both N.C. fabrication and installation) can be extracted enables the preparation of detailed packages containing the desired geometry as well as the associated material and sequencing data, thus assuring the producibility of the design. The SA'AR-5 design is CAD/CAM's state of the art in U.S. shipbuilding.

With ISDN user part (ISUP) signalling, it will be possible to provide different services in the same transmission facility without dedicated partitioning. The paper considers a multi-service switched integrated digital network with dynamic routing where several services are offered. This type of network provides a viable platform for deploying new services in the ISDN era by taking advantage of the dynamic routing capabilities. The paper addresses the problem of network dimensioning for such a multi-service dynamic routing network and presents mathematical formulations of this problem. Exploiting the structure, it proposes a penalty-function based decomposition algorithm for solving this problem.< >

The problem of obtaining optimal pairs of diverse routes to minimize cost for given demand, capacity, and bound requirements is addressed. The mathematical formulation of this problem yields a mixed-integer, multicommodity flow model which can be solved by a Lagrangian relaxation-based algorithm exploiting the structure of the problem. A preliminary study shows improvement in worst case network survivability with diverse routing.< >
