Energy Harvesting Maximization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Using Amplitude Measurements

Energy harvesting can enable a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to self-sustain its operations without relying on external power sources. In this paper, we consider the problem of energy harvesting for RISs in the absence of coordination with the ambient RF source. We propose a series of sequential phase-alignment algorithms that maximize the received power based on only power measurements. We prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm to the optimal value for the noiseless scenario. However, for the noisy scenario, we propose a linear least squares estimator. We prove that within the class of linear estimators, the optimal set of measurement phases are equally-spaced phases. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we introduce a random phase update algorithm as a benchmark. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the random phase update method in terms of achieved power after convergence while requiring fewer measurements per phase update. Using simulations, we show that in a noiseless scenario with a discrete set of possible phase shifts for the RIS elements, the proposed method is suboptimal, achieving a higher value than the random algorithm but not exactly the maximum feasible value that we obtained by exhaustive search. © 2023, CC BY.

There has never been a greater pressing need for strong and sophisticated cybersecurity measures as our society gets more digitally integrated. This abstract explores the landscape of next-generation cybersecurity, addressing the innovations, difficulties, and approaches essential for safeguarding the digital future. Innovations in cybersecurity are vital for staying ahead of the evolving threat landscape. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning has revolutionized the field, allowing for proactive threat detection, rapid response, and adaptive defences. Blockchain technology is another noteworthy innovation, providing a decentralized and tamper-resistant framework for securing sensitive data and transactions. The integration of these technologies represents a paradigm shift in cybersecurity strategies, emphasizing a more dynamic and intelligent approach. However, with innovation comes a new set of challenges. The increasing sophistication of cyber threats poses difficulties for traditional security measures. Advanced persistent threats (APTs), zero-day exploits, and ransomware attacks require adaptive and resilient defense mechanisms. Additionally, the interconnected nature of modern systems raises concerns about supply chain attacks and the potential for cascading vulnerabilities. Addressing these difficulties requires a holistic and collaborative approach that spans technology, policy, and education. Approaches to next-generation cybersecurity must prioritize collaboration between industry, government, and academia. With the fast advances in quantum computing and its applications, traditional encryption methods employed by Internet of Things (IoT) healthcare devices are becoming increasingly vulnerable. As a result, Post-Quantum Cryptographic (PQC) algorithms have been used to protect patients’ private medical records. However, implementing and integrating PQC algorithms is challenging due to the resource restrictions of healthcare IoT systems. This research aims to evaluate the three PQC algorithms, NewHope, Kyber, and eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme (XMSS), regarding their efficiency, practicality, and drawbacks. The algorithms are implemented in wearable healthcare devices and are accordingly evaluated in terms of performance parameters, including encrypt and decrypt time, memory utilization, and power consumption. In addition, wearable healthcare devices have also been tested to determine secure changes in firmware and allow continuous patient monitoring. The result analysis reveals that when comparing encryption speed and energy economy, Kyber is better than NewHope, whereas XMSS shows better memory efficiency. These findings highlight how PQC algorithms can provide longevity to IoT-based healthcare environments in terms of security measures.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have gained immense popularity in recent years because of their ability to improve wireless coverage and their flexibility to adapt to the changes in a wireless environment. These advantages are due to RISs’ ability to control and manipulate radio frequency (RF) wave propagation. RISs may be deployed in inaccessible locations where it is difficult or expensive to connect to the power grid. Energy harvesting can enable the RIS to self-sustain its operations without relying on external power sources. In this paper, we consider the problem of energy harvesting for RISs in the absence of coordination with the ambient RF source. We consider both direct and indirect energy harvesting scenarios and show that the same mathematical model applies to them. We propose a sequential phase-alignment algorithm that maximizes the received power based on only power measurements. We prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm to the optimal value under specific circumstances. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm converges to the optimal solution in a few iterations and outperforms the random phase update method in terms of the number of required measurements. © 2023, CC BY.

Road traffic injuries cause considerable life and economic losses to individuals, their families, and nations as a whole. To avoid road accidents, Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) play a vital role by enhancing transportation systems to make them intelligent. To enhance road safety, emergency message dissemination schemes are indispensable in VANET-based applications. This paper proposes a routing protocol for emergency message dissemination, which uses stable clustering for the bi-directional highway scenario. To assure the long-term sustainability of a cluster, a median technique for selecting a CH is devised. Further, an extended form of the K-medoids algorithm for a new node joining a cluster is employed, which ensures that both node and cluster have the same direction for bi-directional road traffic. Simulation results reveal that the proposed protocol proffers enhanced throughput and lowers the packet loss rates and end-to-end delay compared with state-of-the-art routing schemes. © 2022 ACM.

A multi-objective optimization method for exploring uncharted space is presented in the study. Robotics exploration personnel create a map of the immediate area using sensor data. It has been observed that a single optimization technique is typically used with a specific objective function to carry out the optimization for space exploration. The optimization process can be sped up and simplified using a mono-objective function, but the map accuracy and exploration depth suffer. This work offers an optimization technique with improved multi-objective functions in recognition of this crucial factor. This not only speeds up the search procedure but also improves the precision of the maps. The Reconfigured Whale Algorithm (rWO), the suggested framework, is based on a Whale Optimizer inspired by whales’ biological behavior. Initializing the whale population, also known as waypoints, is the first step. After being established in the initial stage/iterations, these waypoints are considered constant. The location update from the robot-catered non-dominated waypoints is the next phase. The algorithm optimizes the waypoints. Extensive simulations that simulate various scenarios and environments are used to assess the performance matrices properly. Following the identification of the algorithm’s advantages, the effectiveness of the outcomes is demonstrated by contrasting its performance with that of three popular optimization algorithms: the hybrid CME-Whale Optimizer (WO), the Coordinated Multi-Robot Exploration (CME), and the Arithmetic Optimizer (AO) integrated with CME. Findings show that the suggested approach significantly improves the optimization process by expanding the area that is investigated and speeding up the search process. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

With the emergence of all-inclusive AI/ML applications, hardware solutions, commonly known as AI-Accelerators (AIA), are now being widely adopted to emulate deep neural networks (DNN) to facilitate faster and large-scale data analytics. An AIA-chip comprises a 2D systolic array of identical processing units (PEs), registers, and glue logic. These arrays may be implemented with traditional digital logic or with analog primitives such as memristors. As the packing density of AIA-chips increases, they become vulnerable to various manufacturing defects thereby compromising yield and the accuracy of prediction. In this review article, we summarize various methods that have been recently proposed for expediting Automatic Test-Pattern Generation (ATPG) for stuck-at and transition faults in AIA-arrays. Other relevant issues such as fault-criticality, self-test, fault-recovery, and the asymmetry of fault behavior, are also discussed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper defines analytical models for a Web services system, with two stations on tandem queue, for evaluating the request satisfaction involving two exponential servers, each having its own waiting queue. The first waiting queue is unlimited. The arrivals of requests follow a Poisson process, and after service completion, they can either leave the system or join the second line. The obtained model has not a product form; and the only way to obtain its performances is by computing its steady-state probabilities. To this end, we must use balance equations that give us unlimited equations with unlimited unknowns. In this case the only solution is the use of approximation methods. In this paper we use the truncation method to approximate the performances of our model with the performances of a truncated model. We also use the strong stability method to estimate the error of this approximation. Furthermore, we compute the system's response time, and the average number of clients in the system in terms of the arrival rate of clients requests.

In this chapter we explain the basic components of the quantum paradigm so that one can start writing programs on a suitable platform. We describe several basic features of quantum bits (qubits) and related operations such as quantum gates, and explain how they operate. We also try to explain how working on a quantum platform provides additional advantages over the classical ones. In this regard, teleportation, super-dense coding and CHSH game are discussed.
