A novel algorithm for extracting the regions of interest (ROI) from face images is presented in this paper. The novelty of the algorithm comes from its multi-resolution cellular analysis coupled with an adaptive thresholding technique incorporating a unique idea of exponential averaging. The complexity of the cellular ROIs reported by the algorithm from the frontal face view as input, is further controllable by the chosen cell size, which is its added advantage. Apart from the actual ROIs representing the eye pair, nostrils, and the mouth area, some regions of non-interest may also creep in while extracting the set of cellular regions from the face image, which are discarded by a simple geometric analysis using a containment tree. The containment tree, which is newly introduced in this paper, captures the underlying relationship of the cellular regions, which, when analyzed, returns the face ROIs in an elegant representation. Since the entire algorithm works purely in the integer domain with primitive operations (comparison, right shift, and addition) only, it runs very fast for both gray-scale and color images. Some experimental results on different facial images demonstrate its speed, robustness, and efficiency.

A wide variety of Dirichlet-multinomial 'topic' models have found interesting applications in recent years. While Gibbs sampling remains an important method of inference in such models, variational techniques have certain advantages such as easy assessment of convergence, easy optimization without the need to maintain detailed balance, a bound on the marginal likelihood, and side-stepping of issues with topic-identifiability. The most accurate variational technique thus far, namely collapsed variational latent Dirichlet allocation, did not deal with model selection nor did it include inference for hyperparameters. We address both issues by generalizing the technique, obtaining the first variational algorithm to deal with the hierarchical Dirichlet process and to deal with hyperparameters of Dirichlet variables. Experiments show a significant improvement in accuracy.

This paper examines the affordances that a collaborative digital library (CDL) can bring to bear on supporting information literacy practices in the digital information environment. It suggests that the digital library can contribute to student empowerment in information literacy practices while searching, using and collaboratively building the digital library resources. To illustrate this, the authors have been experimenting with the implementation of an integrated information literacy model based on Eisenberg and Berkowitz' Big 6 Model and describes the CDL features in association with the information literacy dimensions in this model. The CDL focuses on the project-based learning approach to conduct students' project, which supports specific information behaviors that underpin research and learning such as information seeking, browsing, encountering, foraging, sharing, gathering, filtering, and using. Findings regarding teachers' reception of the digital library are encouraging as they feel the relevance of the digital library to the current requirement of the students' project and its potential to entrench information and resource study skills through project-based learning.

In this paper we explore the use of weights in the generation of fuzzy models. We automatically generate a fuzzy model, using a three-stage methodology: (i) generation of a crisp model from a decision tree, induced from the data, (ii) transformation of the crisp model into a fuzzy one, and (iii) optimization of the fuzzy modelpsilas parameters. Based on this methodology, the generated fuzzy model includes a set of parameters, which are all the parameters included in the sigmoid functions. In addition, local, global and class weights are included, thus the fuzzy model is optimized with respect to both sigmoid function parameters and weights. The class weight introduction, which is a novel approach, grants to the fuzzy model the ability to identify the individual importance of each class and thus more accurately reflect the underlying properties of the classes under examination, in the domain of application. The above described methodology is applied to five known classification problems, obtained from the UCI machine learning repository, and the obtained classification accuracy is high.

A novel three-stage methodology for the detection of fetal heart rate (fHR) from multivariate abdominal electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings is introduced. In the first stage, the maternal R-peaks and fiducial points (maternal QRS onset and offset) are detected. Maternal fiducial points are used to eliminate the maternal QRS complexes from the abdominal ECG recordings. In the second stage, two denoising procedures are applied to enhance the fetal QRS complexes. The phase space characteristics are employed to identify fetal heart beats not overlapping with the maternal QRSs which are eliminated in the first stage. The extraction of the fetal heart rate is accomplished in the third stage, using a histogram based technique in order to identify the location of the fetal heart beats which overlap with the maternal QRSs. The methodology is evaluated on simulated and real multichannel ECG signals. In both cases, the obtained results indicate high performance; in the simulated ECGs the accuracy ranges from 74.21–100%, depending on the employed SNR, while in the real recordings the average accuracy is 94.08%.

Accessibility is a challenge for people with disabilities. Differences in cognitive ability, sensory impairments, motor dexterity, behavioral skills, and social skills must be taken into account when designing interfaces for assistive devices. Flexible interfaces tuned for individuals, instead of custom-built solutions, may benefit a larger number of people. The development and evaluation of a flexible interface for controlling a wheelchair mounted robotic arm is described in this paper. There are four versions of the interface based on input device (touch screen or joystick) and a moving or stationary shoulder camera. M-FISH (multiplex fluorescent in situ hybridization) is a multichannel channel chromosome imaging technique that allows the color discrimination of human chromosomes. Although M-FISH facilitates the visual detection of chromosome rearrangements, the success of this technique largely depends on the accuracy of the pixel-by-pixel classification. In this paper, we present a new method that enhances the classification ratio based on a region based decorrelation stretch transform. Utilizing the decomposition of the multichannel image into homogenous regions, the classification results improved after the application of the decorrelation stretch transform. Fifteen M-FISH images were used to test our method. To quantitatively estimate the enhancement we have used a Bayes pixel-by-pixel classifier and an improvement of 12.28% is achieved.

The multicast routing protocols used in wire network, such as distance vector multicast routing protocol(DVMRP), multicast open shortest path first(MOSPF), core based tree(CBT), do not run very well in ad hoc network because the dynamic net topology may destroy the distribution tree. Besides, distribution tree usually needs global routing structure. Which produces extra processing cost because the dynamic topology will introduce frequent exchange of routing vector or routing state between nodes. To deal with these problems multicast forwarding group routing protocol (MFGRP) which is based on route grid is designed on basis of dynamic source routing protocol (DSR). MFGRP ensures the multicast packets are sent to destination through dynamic topology network using multicast route grid.
