Microarray technology provides a tool for the simultaneous analysis of the expression level for an amount of genes. Microarray studies have been shown that image processing techniques can significantly influence microarray data precision. In this paper we propose a supervised method for the segmentation of microarray images based on classification techniques. Support Vector machine is employed to classify each pixel of the image into signal, background or artefacts. In addition, a preprocessing step is applied in order to filter the initial image. The proposed method is applied both to real and simulated images. The pixels of the image are classified in two classes for the real images and three classes for the simulated one. For this task, an informative set of features is used from both green and red channels. The results obtained indicate high accuracy (∼99%).

The biclustering method is a very useful tool for analyzing gene expression data when some genes have multiple functions and experimental conditions are diverse in gene expression measurement. It focuses on finding a subset of genes and a subset of experimental conditions that together exhibit coherent behavior. A large number of biclustering algorithms has been developed for analyzing gene expression data. Most of them find exclusive biclusters, which is inappropriate in the biological context. Since biological processes are not independent of each other, many genes participate in multiple different processes. Hence, nonexclusive biclustering algorithms are required for finding highly overlapping biclusters. In this regard, a novel overlapping biclustering algorithm is presented here to find overlapping biclusters of larger volume with mean squared residue lower than a given threshold. The proposed method consists of two phases. First, a set of highly coherent seeds is generated based on two-way k-medoids algorithm, where mutual information is used as a similarity measure instead of using Euclidean distance. The seeds are then iteratively adjusted (enlarged or degenerated) by adding or removing genes and conditions based on a new quantitative index. In effect, the proposed method provides highly overlapping coherent biclusters with mean squared residue lower than a given threshold. Some quantitative indices are introduced for evaluating the quality of generated biclusters. The quality of biclusters found by the proposed approach is discussed and the results are compared to those reported by existing methods. In general, the proposed approach shows an excellent performance at finding patterns in gene expression data.

The aim of this work is the development of a method to assist the diagnosis and classification of the status of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) using information that can be extracted from fMRI. The method consists of five stages: a) preprocessing of fMRI data to remove non-task related variability, b) modeling BOLD response depending on stimulus, c) feature extraction from fMRI data, d) feature selection and e) classification using the Random Forests (RF) algorithm. The proposed method is evaluated using data from 41 subjects (14 young adults, 14 non demented older adults and 13 demented older adults.

This paper presents vibration analysis techniques for fault detection in rotating machines. Rolling-element bearing defects inside a motor pump are the object of study. A dynamic model of the faults usually found in this context is presented. Initially a graphic simulation is used to produce the signals. Signal processing techniques, like frequency filters, Hilbert transform and spectral analysis are then used to extract features that will later be used as a base to classify the states of the studied process. After that real data from a centrifugal pump is submitted to the developed methods.

In this paper we present the POCEMON platform, a platform aiming to the early prognosis and diagnosis of autoimmune diseases at any point of care, even the primary. The objective of the POCEMON platform is the development of a diagnostic lab-on-chip device based on genomic microarrays of HLA-typing. The POCEMON is going to advance and promote the primary health care across Europe by supporting a) point-of-care diagnostics, b) monitoring of immune system status and c) management of the chronic multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) autoimmune diseases. The platform combines high-end Information and Communication Technologies based on microfluidics, microelectronics, microarrays and intelligent diagnosis algorithms.
