Microgrids are networks of small, distributed electrical power generators operated as a collective unit - a system of energy systems. The range of hardware and control options for Microgrid operation are reviewed. The paper summarizes and highlights the operating principles and key conclusions of research and field trials to-date. An overview is given on demonstration projects for Microgrids which have been, and are being, constructed.

Automatic seizure detection based on time-frequency analysis and artificial neural networks

The recording of seizures is of primary interest in the evaluation of epileptic patients. Seizure is the phenomenon of rhythmicity discharge from either a local area or the whole brain and the individual behavior usually lasts from seconds to minutes. Since seizures, in general, occur infrequently and unpredictably, automatic detection of seizures during long-term electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings is highly recommended. As EEG signals are nonstationary, the conventional methods of frequency analysis are not successful for diagnostic purposes. This paper presents a method of analysis of EEG signals, which is based on time-frequency analysis. Initially, selected segments of the EEG signals are analyzed using time-frequency methods and several features are extracted for each segment, representing the energy distribution in the time-frequency plane. Then, those features are used as an input in an artificial neural network (ANN), which provides the final classification of the EEG segments concerning the existence of seizures or not. We used a publicly available dataset in order to evaluate our method and the evaluation results are very promising indicating overall accuracy from 97.72 to 100.

Treatment from a trained therapist is an important aspect of stroke rehabilitation, but resource limits mean that not all stroke patients receive the treatment that they require. The iPAM (Intelligent Pneumatic Arm Movement) is a robotic system that aims to provide more time-efficient rehabilitation therapy. To make sure this really addresses the needs of therapists and patients, the iPAM development has involved significant input from both parties throughout its development. However, despite the generally accepted importance of user involvement in the development of rehabilitation robotics, there is still a lack of published literature in this area, and most of the reported cases only seek user opinion once a device has been developed. This paper reviews existing literature on user involvement, and discusses the approach adopted in the iPAM project. Feedback from the user tests is presented, along with a discussion of its implications for future development of the system, and the importance of involving users in all stages of the development process.

We propose private protocols implementing the Kernel Adatron and Kernel Perceptron learning algorithms, give private classification protocols and private polynomial kernel computation protocols. The new protocols return their outputs - either the kernel value, the classifier or the classifications - in encrypted form so that they can be decrypted only by a common agreement by the protocol participants. We show how to use the encrypted classifications to privately estimate many properties of the data and the classifier. The new SVM classifiers are the first to be proven private according to the standard cryptographic definitions. Copyright 2006 ACM.

This paper analyzes the reflections of an agile team, developing a large-scale project in an industry setting. The team uses an Iteration Summary Meeting practice, which includes four elements: The customer's summary, a formal presentation of the system, review of metrics and a reflection. The technique for the entire meeting and for the reflection element in particular is described, and empirical evidence is given to show that it is assessed as highly effective, achieving its intended goals, and increasing team satisfaction. Further, the proposed practice supports tracking past decisions. This practice is shown to be valuable to stabilizing a new project as well as a continuous improvement forum for a stable project. It also incurs a lower overhead than existing alternative reflection practices.

We consider the problem of how one can estimate the support of Boolean queries given a collection of frequent itemsets. We describe an algorithm that truncates the inclusion-exclusion sum to include only the frequencies of known itemsets, give a bound for its performance on disjunctions of attributes that is smaller than the previously known bound, and show that this bound is in fact achievable. We also show how to generalize the algorithm to approximate arbitrary Boolean queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Cardiac modelling spans a period of nearly half a century and has faced the development of many mathematical representations of the major types of cardiac cells. These models have been used to answer patho-physiological questions at both single cell and multicellular level. In this work, we discuss the merits of dimensionality for 0D single cell models and 1D cell strands. We look at models of the origin and spread of cardiac excitation from the sinoatrial node into atrial tissue. We present results for the single cell model of sinoatrial node and the results when phase resetting is applied. The effects of phase resetting are discussed using phase resetting curves. We also present the results of application of a critical stimulus on the membrane potential of sinoatrial node (SAN) that permanent annihilates the propagation of the excitation. Simulation of the spread of normal and disturbed cardiac excitation requires the use of multicellular models. 1D architectures suffer from limitations in neighbouring tissue effects on individual cells, but they can be applied to the simulation of normal spread of excitation or, in ring-like structures and re-entry simulation. In 1D model each cell is connected to each other into a strand of cells from sinoatrial node to atria. We present the results of simulating 1D model from sinoatrial node to the atrium. With respect to the study of the heart, 1D model can be used to address important aspects of the origin and spread of cardiac excitation. Models of higher dimensionality can incorporate more structural and functional details, and range from homogeneous tissue blocks to highly detailed anatomical representations. © 2006 World Scientific Publishing Co. We propose an algorithm to separate out tables and math-zones from document images. The algorithm relies on the spatial characteristics of tables and math-zones in a document. It has been observed that tables have distinct columns which imply that gaps between the fields are substantially larger than the gaps between the words in text lines and in math-zones the characters and symbols are less dense in comparison to normal text lines. These deceptively simple observations have led us to design a simple but powerful table and math-zone detection system with low computation cost. Copyright 2006 ACM.
