This paper proposes a novel particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm using the concept of age of particles. Effective fitness of a particle depends both on its functional value and age. Age of a newly generated particle is taken as zero, and in every iteration age of each individual is increased by one. In this paper, a trapezoidal aging function is considered. The model aims to emulate natural swarm system in a more natural way. The effectiveness of this concept is demonstrated by cluster analysis. Results show that the model provides enhanced performance and maintains more diversity in the swarm and thereby allows the particles to be robust to trace the changing environment.

The recent evolution of distributed systems has favoured the development of a new generation of mobile agents based applications. In fact, many agent systems have been created in the last few years, and there are currently various efforts to standardize them. However, some problems are still under research, including mechanisms for agent security, control structures, transactional support, and design of communication models. Previous research has shown that better communication performance model can be achieved by mixing remote procedure calls with agent migration. Embodied evolution is a methodology for evolutionary robotics that mimics the distributed, asynchronous and autonomous properties of biological evolution. The evaluation, selection and reproduction are carried out by and between the robots, without any need for human intervention. In this paper, we propose a biologically inspired embodied evolution framework, which fully integrates self-preservation, recharging from external batteries in the environment, and self-reproduction, pair-wise exchange of genetic material, into a survival system. The individuals are explicitly evaluated for the performance of the battery capturing task, but also implicitly for the mating task by the fact that an individual that mates frequently has larger probability to spread its gene in the population. We have evaluated our method in simulation experiments and the simulation results show that the solutions obtained by our embodied evolution method were able to optimize the two survival tasks, battery capturing and mating, simultaneously. We have also performed preliminary experiments in hardware, with promising results.

It is a significant challenge to implement and research agile software development methods in organizations such as the army. Since it differs from organizations in the industry and the academia, data gathered in the army and its continuous analysis may enrich the community knowledge abut agile methods. This work describes a research, conducted during an entire release, about one development team at the Israeli Air Force that works according to Extreme Programming. The establishment of this team and the investigation of the first release is part of a long-term process, started last year, aiming to reduce delivery time while raising communication and customer collaboration. Among several themes this research is concerned with, we focus on agile metrics and provide a metrics mechanism that was established and refined along the release development.
