Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the most popular index to assess the arterial stiffness. Recently, several non-invasive examination methods with single channel for PWV are announced. This paper proposes a non-invasive digital volume pulse (DVP) measuring system using a dual channel simultaneous measurement method[1] and tries to meet the demands for home healthcare equipment which is easy to operate. Through synchronal technical in measuring DVP signals from finger and toe can achieve more precise time and substantially reduces the time spend in measurement procedures. On the other hand, the proposed system developed an algorithm to locate the "Foot of the wave" without facilitating of electrocardiogram (ECG). In terms of device and computer data transmission, this paper adopts communication interface Universal Serial Bus(USB), In spite of the advantage of USB interface, RS-232 is gradually out of use and USB can only be found to be used in the notebooks. Such fact causes doctors' inconvenience to carry notebooks and PWV around to measure artery sclerosis. The paper, hence, combines USB communication interface and PWV device, in hopes of maximizing the user-friendly function of such device.

This paper briefly discusses the motivating factors that led to formation of an active collaborative group of engineering and education faculty at Virginia Tech. This group is actively pursuing a number of engineering education research activities and has been successful in winning two grants from the NSF in first 12 months of their collaborative efforts. These collaborative activities are targeted at improving engineering pedagogy at Virginia Tech and began with a planning grant from the NSF in September 2003. A 15-month Masters/Licensure program has been developed specifically for licensing engineering graduates in technology Education. A number of assessment activities have been initiated for analyzing curricular changes beginning with the freshman-engineering program. Use of electronic portfolio in engineering instruction is being explored. The curricula of freshman engineering and bioprocess engineering are being reformulated using a theme based spiral curriculum approach, which is part of a major research grant, under the Department-level reform program of the NSF, that began in September '04. The interdisciplinary group has developed/ is working on a number of research proposals for expanding the scope of ongoing studies. The information presented should be very useful for new engineering educators who are exploring similar collaborative ventures elsewhere.

Web services are becoming an important enabler of the semantic Web. Besides the need for a rich description mechanism, Web service information should be made available in an accessible way for machine processing. In this paper, we propose a new P2P based approach for Web services discovery. Peers that store Web services information, such as data item descriptions, are efficiently located using a scalable and robust data indexing structure for peer-to-peer data networks, NIPPERS. We present a theoretical analysis which shows that the communication cost of the query and update operations scale double-logarithmically with the number of NIPPERS nodes. Furthermore, we show that the network is robust with respect to failures fulfilling quality of Web services requirements.

The design consists of two steps: magnitude approximation and group delay compensation. Video streaming services that provide heterogeneous video quality are required because the usage environments are diverse and changing dynamically. Considering the characteristics of the application, services must be distributed without stopping the service or deteriorating video quality. In order to achieve that, though the volume of the video data is too huge, it is necessary to reduce total storage volume and transmission quantity. In this paper, autonomous video-on-demand system architecture for heterogeneous quality levels and an evaluation method of service reliability are proposed. In this system, we employ layered video streaming data and distribute each layered video stream data in different servers. The system, streams the data from multiple sources to the users, assuring a reliable transmission. The evaluation shows the effectiveness of the proposal.

An automated methodology which detects transient events in EEG recordings and classifies those as epileptic spikes, muscle activity, eye blinking activity and sharp alpha activity is presented. It is based on data mining algorithms and includes four stages: (I) EEG preprocessing and transient events detection, (II) clustering of transient events and feature extraction, (III) feature discretization and (IV) association rule mining and classification. The methodology is evaluated using a dataset of 25 EEG recordings and the obtained overall accuracy is 84.35%. The major advantage of our approach is that it is able to provide interpretation for the decisions made since it is based on a set of association rules.

Stroke is a common condition resulting in 30,000 people per annum left with significant disability. In patients with severe arm paresis after stroke, functional recovery in the affected arm is poor. Inadequate intensity of treatment is cited as one factor accounting for the lack arm recovery found in some studies. Given that physical therapy resource is limited, strategies to enhance the physiotherapists' efforts are needed. One approach is to use robotic techniques to augment movement therapy. Kinematic analysis of upper limb movement during a patient's physiotherapy session was used to determine the appropriate therapeutic workspace. An existing single robot arm is adapted to optimize its operating area to allow full movement in this desired workspace. The kinematic data is also used to look at the constraints involved in attaching two robot arms to the user's forearm and upper arm. An optimized design and configuration of the dual robot arms is proposed that allows appropriate control of the patient's arm throughout the desired workspace.
