We consider the problem of maximizing the lifetime of a given multicast connection in a wireless network of energy-constrained (e.g. battery-operated) nodes, by choosing ideal transmission power levels for the nodes relaying the connection. We distinguish between two basic operating modes: In a static assignment, the power levels of the nodes are set at the beginning and remain unchanged until the nodes are depleted of energy. In a dynamic assignment, the powers can be adjusted during operation. We show that lifetime-maximizing static power assignments can be found in polynomial time, whereas for dynamic assignments, a quantized-time version of the problem is NP-hard. We then study the approximability of the quantized dynamic case and conclude that no polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) exists for the problem unless P = NP. Finally, by considering two approximation heuristics for the dynamic case, we show experimentally that the lifetime of a dynamically maintained multicast connection can be made several times longer than what can be achieved by the best possible static assignment.

In this article, we present PLACEBO, an innovative software and hardware platform, which intends to solve biomedical problems formulated in terms of partial differential equations. It can be networked with various imaging devices, such as MRI and CT and can be used for pre-operative surgical planning. It employs an effective computational environment for solving partial differential equations, which is based on neural networks. This approach, in order to exploit the parallel character of the neural networks, is implemented partly in specialized hardware hosted on a commercial PC. There are two operation levels. A user-level, targeting health professionals that need to solve a set of predefined biomedical problems, and a bioengineering level, which allows the construction of problem sets. Since ease of use is of paramount importance for these kind of platforms, a friendly graphical user-interface is being developed.

This paper provides an overview of the concept, the functionalities and the architecture of the CHILDCARE platform. The CHILDCARE system aims at supporting the out-of-hospital continuous healthcare management of chronically ill children. Special focus is placed on the utilization of the latest technology accomplishments towards the incorporation of teleconference sessions, collaborative spaces and intelligent add-ons over a common secure platform. This combination allows for: (a) remote communication between health experts and the child's family, (b) efficient collaboration between the responsible doctor and healthcare professionals, (c) interfacing legacy hospital information systems to obtain health records, (d) set-up, execution and monitoring of health management plans, (e) ubiquitous access from multiple devices, (f) role-based management of the actors with respect to their actual involvement in the healthcare process, (g) confidentiality and security at all levels.

In this paper we describe an innovative system that aims to integrate heterogeneous distributed healthcare information resources. It is based on the advantages of technologies like the extensible markup language (XML), controlled vocabularies (CVs) such as wordnet and the unified medical language system (UMLS), as well as the common object request broker architecture (CORBA). The proposed approach is based on three key functionalities: a) the user-transparent acquisition of each source's structural information, b) the lexical and semantical analysis based elaboration of the user's initial query and c) the appropriate combination of the results from the two previous functionalities, aiming to the selection of the query that corresponds with each source. CORBA is responsible for providing the interoperability between objects in this disparate distributed environment.

We present an intelligent web-based system, called h-Life, which addresses the monitoring and improvement of health and lifestyle through the provision of customized dietary plans. Additional plan-related services including monitoring, alerting, reminding and evaluation, complement the functionality of the h-Life system. Several innovative components are integrated in order to efficiently manage the storage, access and retrieval of medical and personal data. Based on the latest technologies in intelligent and communication systems, the system provides the user with personalized dietary plans and lifestyle information, tailored to the individual needs. The h-Life system is based on a scalable and interoperable architecture that can be easily extended to accommodate future needs. Apart from a personal health assistant for the end-users, h-Life is a valuable tool for the health professionals that can remotely monitor their customers and manage the medical knowledge utilized by the system.

In this paper we explore the RR interval signal to detect arrhythmic segments in electrocardiograms (ECG) using non-linear analysis. Initially, the RR interval signal is extracted and it is segmented into small segments. Linear (standard deviation), spectral (total energy) and non-linear (approximated entropy and normalized entropy) characteristics are extracted for each segment. Time-frequency analysis is used for the calculation of the total energy. These characteristics are fed into a neural network to classify each segment as normal or arrhythmic. The proposed approach is validated using the MIT-BIH database for various segment sizes (32, 64, 128, 256 and 512 RR intervals). The method results in high sensitivity and specificity (85% sensitivity and 92% specificity) for arrhythmic segment detection.

We establish the context of software maintenance outsourcing of large commercial systems and discuss the problem of estimating the maintenance effort in absence of key parameters such as development effort and maintenance history. To arrive at the drivers that could have a significant effect on the maintenance effort, an experiment was conducted at Syntel, a NASDAQ listed application management and e-business solutions company. We present the list of possible drivers, the profile of the people who participated in the experiment, the details of the 36 experiments and the statistical analysis of the experiment based on Taguchi's methodology. For a system whose size parameter in terms of lines of code is known, we conclude that the five most significant parameters that effect the efforts of maintenance are a)the multi time zone support, b)average number of lines per program, c)percentage of online programs in the total system, d)the nature of service level agreements and e)the complexity of the file system being used.
