The analysis of cancer survival is used to determine the efficiency of treatment programmes and protocols;it is also used to determine the type of treatment. At the individual level a prediction of cancer survival can help patients make informed decisions with regards to their quality of life and future finances. Currently available prediction methods apply to groups of people, and may not be adequate to predict treatment outcome for individual patients. This paper presents a conceptual model of a cancer knowledge base incorporating a computer-based predictor for survival. It proposes the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) as an alternative tool for investigating cancer survival. The focus of this research will be on nasopharyngeal carcinoma survival data collected in Malaysia. © 2000, Sage Publications. All rights reserved.

A new nonhierarchical clustering procedure for symbolic objects is presented wherein during the first stage of the algorithm, the initial seed points are selected using the concept of farthest neighbours, and in suceeding stages the seed points are computed iteratively until the seed points get stabilised. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

This paper presents a BIST design suitable for detecting multiple stuck-open faults in two-level CMOS single complex cells. The test pattern generator (TPG) generates a sequence of length 2n.2/sup n/ that includes all n.2/sup n/ single-input-change (SIC) ordered test pairs for an n-input circuit under test (CUT). The signature analyzer (SA) counts the number of alternate transitions at the output. Design of the corresponding TPG and SA is straightforward.

This paper presents a completeness result for a first-order interval temporal logic, called Neighbourhood Logic (NL) which has two neighbourhood modalities. NL can support the specification of liveness and fairness properties of computing systems as well as formalisation of many concepts of real analysis. These two modalities are also adequate in the sense that they can derive other important unary and binary modalities of interval temporal logic. We prove the completeness result for NL by giving a Kripke model semantics and then mapping the Kripke models to the interval models for NL. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Demand-side management studies include such goals as the reduction of the maximum electrical energy demand and the demand strategic growing that may lead to specific actions such as the rates adequation or the energy resources conservation or saving. To support these strategic decisions it is necessary to have typical models of customer consumption behavior. A sample of 112 monthly consumption files of selected energy users was used to classify customers using a data mining technique based on an ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) algorithm modified with euclidean distance measure. Each file contains one load curve per day and each curve consists of 96 consumption values (Kwh) - one for each 15 minute interval. The algorithm gives results very similar to those obtained by iteratively using a combination of traditional approaches of statistics and visualization. However, with the mining algorithm, the time invested in getting the results is in the order of minutes, as opposed to hours with the traditional approaches. The paper will describe in detail the methodology, algorithm, and software system used to classify energy customers.

The National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST) Automated Mass Spectral Deconvolution and Identification System (AMDIS) is applied to a selection of data files obtained from the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of urinary organic acids. Mass spectra obtained after deconvolution are compared with a special user library containing both the mass spectra and retention indices of ethoxime-trimethylsilyl (EO-TMS) derivatives of a set of organic acids. Efficient identification of components is achieved and the potential of the procedure for automated diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism and for related research is demonstrated.

This presentation discusses the creation of a digital library which contains scientific work produced by the Technical Chamber of Greece and disseminated to its members through post or library services. The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) is the technical consultant to the Government as well as the professional organisation of greek engineers (numbering more than 60.000). Among TEE activities, it conducts studies and organizes various meetings on technical and related aspects, like architecture, town planning, environment, information technology, chemical engineering, naval architecture, civil engineering and so on. It publishes three professional periodicals: the weekly information bulletin “Enimerotiko Deltio” which is sent free to all members and contains news, comments and activities of TEE, the bimonthly journal Technika Chronika, containing studies, reports and articles on general technical subjects and the scientific publication Technika Chronika, published in five separate sections addressed to the various engineering fields, with scientific and research articles in Greek including an extended summary in English. In addition, TEE publishes scientific and technical books and translations of foreign specifications.
