In order for mobile ad-hoc networks (manets) to be a viable alternative to infrastructured wired and wireless networks, efficient reliable multicast protocols need to be established. In this paper, we propose a Robust Multicast Routing algorithm (RoMR), for ad-hoc networks. In order to increase reliability, RoMR builds multiple trees from a sender to each of the receivers in the multicast group. A novel technique to predict the likelihood that a link will continue to exist into the next time span is based on successive power levels of the received signal from neighboring nodes. These predictions are used during the creation of the multicast trees. Another unique aspect of RoMR is that links that are predicted to be less prone to failure than other links may be shared among several trees. Forward error correcting coding techniques reduce the total number of extra packets added to the original data packets from the source into the network increasing the efficiency of protocol.

Selective encryption is a technique to save computational complexity or enable new system functionality by encrypting only a portion of a compressed bitstream while achieving adequate security. Although suggested in a number of specific cases, selective encryption could be much more widely used in consumer electronic applications, ranging from mobile multimedia terminals to digital cameras, were it subjected to a more thorough security analysis. We describe selective encryption and develop a simple scalar quantizer example to demonstrate the power of the concept, list a number of potential consumer electronics applications, then describe an appropriate method for developing and analyzing selective encryption for particular compression algorithms. We summarize results from the application of this method to the MPEG-2 video compression algorithm.

Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. Over the past decade, the growing interests in realistic visual communication systems have led to the rapid development of 3D visual compression techniques. A stereoscopic system is one way of simulating 3D perception. Without exploiting the high redundancy in a stereo pair, the amount of data required to store or transmit it is doubled, when compared to that for monocular images. In this paper, we present a new technique for coding stereo video sequences based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The proposed technique exploits Zerotree Entropy Coding (ZTE) that makes use of the wavelet block concept to achieve low bit rate stereo video coding. One of the two image streams, the main stream, is independently coded by a modified zerotree video coder and the second stream, the auxiliary stream, is predicted based on disparity compensation. The residual image of the auxiliary stream is then coded by a modified zerotree video coder. Results show that the proposed encoder can achieve 50% bandwidth reduction compared to the ZTE based monoscopic compression encoder.

A Dynamic, Tunable, QoS-Fair Scheduling Scheme for Mutlimedia Streams

A great deal of packet scheduling research in high speed integrated, multimedia services networks (ISNs) aims to efficiently emulate the Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) service discipline. The approach used by these schemes has been, first, to maximize the emulation accuracy through the use of packet-by-packet scheduling decisions and then to minimize the complexity involved in making such decisions. While reductions in algorithmic complexity are useful, we believe the straight-forward GPS emulation prescribed by these schemes is not necessary in ISNs. It is the fulfillment of quality of service QoS guarantees, not GPS accuracy, which represents the primary metric for success in ISNs. In this paper, we present a new scheduling approach, QoS-Aware Fair Sharing (QFQ), designed to reduce packet scheduling overhead while guaranteeing the QoS requirements of supported applications. Because the central goal of the QFQ discipline lies in meeting the QoS requirements of backlogged flows and not guaranteeing a weighted-fair portion of the server’s output to such flows, the QFQ approach provides ISN servers with a great deal of flexibility in determining how to service contending application flows. This paper presents this new and innovative scheme which seeks to exploit an excess capacity allocation policy in order to achieve a reduction in service overhead. This paper describes how such an objective can be achieved and shows how excess capacity can be identified for this purpose despite the presence of non-empty service queues. A set simulation experiments demonstrate the capabilities of the QFQ server and compare its performance to other ISN scheduling schemes. © 2002, UK Simulation Society. All rights reserved.

Location aware services are becoming attractive with the deployment of next generation wireless networks and broadband multimedia wireless networks especially in indoor and campus areas. To provide location aware services, obtaining the position of a user accurately is important. While it is possible to deploy additional infrastructure for this purpose, using existing communications infrastructure is preferred for cost reasons. Because of technical restrictions, location fingerprinting schemes are the most promising. In this paper we present a systematic study of the performance tradeoff and deployment issues. In this paper we present some experimental results towards such a systematic study and discuss some issues related to the indoor positioning problem.

Multicast networking is poised to play a prominent role in the future deployment of multimedia applications. Multimedia applications are usually resource intensive, have stringent quality of service requirements, and in many cases involve large multicast groups. Multicasting enables these applications to scale to a large number of users without overloading the network and server resources. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a new heuristic for building low-cost, delay-bounded multicast trees to support multimedia applications. The approach used by the proposed heuristic to "optimize" the multicast tree limits its paths computation to paths which originate from the multicast destinations instead of all pairs of paths, as is the case in other well-known algorithms. Moreover, the path finding procedure, based on Dijkstra's algorithm, results in the selection of better paths than those discovered the k-shortest path based procedures. The simulation results show that the proposed heuristic outperforms on average other known heuristics.

We present improved fast deterministic algorithm for integer sorting in linear space. Our algorithm sorts n integers in linear space in O(n log log n log log log n) time. This improves the O(n(log log n)3/2) time bound given in [6]. When the n integers in {0,1,..., m - 1} to be sorted satisfying log m (log n)2+, 0 < a < 1, the time complexity for sorting can be further reduced to O(n log log n).
