Visible light positioning (VLP) is a promising positioning technique, which, however, typically requires multiple luminaires to achieve accurate positioning. This paper proposes a novel visual odometry (VO) assisted visible light positioning algorithm (VO-VLP) in achieving positioning with only a single luminaire. In the considered model, a user equipped with a camera jointly uses geometric features in the captured images and coordinates information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) for positioning. The proposed VLP algorithm does not rely on any extra inertial measurement unit and relaxes the tilted angle limitation at the user. In particular, VO-VLP first uses the circle feature of a luminaire to obtain dual normal vectors of the luminaire. Then, the basic principle of VO is used to eliminate the wrong normal vector by exploiting the geometric features in two consecutive images captured when the user moves. Finally, the pose and location of the user are obtained by using an artificially marked point on the luminaire's contour. VO-VLP can achieve accurate positioning with only a single luminaire and a camera. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 97th-percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm.

The future of vehicular communication networks relies on mmWave massive multi-input-multi-output antenna arrays for intensive data transfer and massive vehicle access. However, reliable vehicle-to-infrastructure links require exact alignment between the narrow beams, which traditionally involves excessive signaling overhead. To address this issue, we propose a novel proactive beamforming scheme that integrates multi-modal sensing and communications via Multi-Modal Feature Fusion Network (MMFF-Net), which is composed of multiple neural network components with distinct functions. Unlike existing methods that rely solely on communication processing, our approach obtains comprehensive environmental features to improve beam alignment accuracy. We verify our scheme on the Vision-Wireless (ViWi) dataset, which we enriched with realistic vehicle drifting behavior. Our proposed MMFF-Net achieves more accurate and stable angle prediction, which in turn increases the achievable rates and reduces the communication system outage probability. Even in complex dynamic scenarios with adverse environment conditions, robust prediction results can be guaranteed, demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of the proposed proactive beamforming approach. We propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact and efficient power splitter on LNOI. The device is realized through the inverse design of a digital meta-structure and occupies a small footprint of only 4.8×4.8μm 2 . The measured results show that the insertion losses are below 2.5dB across the wavelength band of 1500–1560 nm, and the power imbalance between the two output ports is within 0.3 dB.

This paper considers an uplink Internet of Things system with synchronous periodic traffic, where multiple devices generate their status updates at the beginning of each global frame and attempt to send them to a common access point. To achieve a low network-wide age of information (AoI) in an easily implementable manner, we require each device to adopt an age-dependent random access protocol, i.e., to transmit with a certain probability only when its corresponding AoI reaches a certain threshold. We analyze the time-average expected AoI by a multilayer Markov model where an external infinite-horizon Markov chain manages the jumps between the beginnings of frames, while two internal finite-horizon Markov chains manage the evolution during an arbitrary frame for different cases. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the modeling and the AoI advantage over age-independent schemes. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Urbanization and industrialization in cities present substantial obstacles to air quality, resulting in detrimental effects on public health, including respiratory health. This research introduces an Internet of Things (IoT) framework for a smart city environment using LoRaWAN and sensor networks. The framework utilizes the ESP32 LoRaWAN module to provide real-time monitoring of essential air quality metrics, such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), temperature, and humidity. Integrating biosensors enhances accuracy by identifying distinct biological indicators linked to respiratory well-being. The proposed work aims to use the framework in an urban setting within a global context, demonstrating its capacity to reduce the effects of lung disorders. The ESP32 LoRaWAN module enables effective communication within the sensor network up to 20 kilometers, guaranteeing a robust and adaptable solution for smart city applications. The developed framework provides a scalable and novel method for developing healthier and more sustainable cities, decreasing respiratory disorders as urban settings develop.

Computing power network (CPN), which integrates heterogeneous computing resources and communication network, can tackle the challenges brought by the pervasiveness of mobile and Internet of Things applications. In this paper, we study the optimization of task scheduling in a CPN network by considering the unbalancing between task distribution and resource cost. The design objective is to maximize the system profit while satisfying tasks' delay requirements. We formulate this problem as an integer programming problem. To address this NP-hard problem, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based multistage profit-aware task scheduling algorithm which first makes coarse grained task allocation using DRL among regions and then determines an optimized intra-region task assignment by using profit-aware balancing algorithm. Extensive simulations are conducted for performance evaluation and the results show the high performance of the proposed algorithm as compared with baseline algorithms.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. © 1998-2012 IEEE.
