Sensing, computation, and communication (SC 2 ) are highly coupled processes in federated edge learning (FEEL) and need to be jointly designed in a task-oriented manner for pursuing the best FEEL performance under the stringent resource constraints at edge devices. However, this remains an open problem as there is a lack of theoretical understanding on how the SC 2 resources jointly affect the FEEL performance. In this paper, we address the problem of joint SC 2 resource allocation for FEEL via a concrete case study of human motion recognition based on wireless sensing. Specifically, the joint SC 2 resource allocation problem is cast to maximize the convergence speed of FEEL, under the constraints on training time and energy supply of each edge device. Solving this problem entails solving two subproblems in order: the first one reduces to determining a joint sensing and communication resource allocation that maximizes the total number of samples sensed during the entire training process; the second one concerns the partition of the total number of sensed samples over communication rounds to determine the batch size at each round for convergence speed maximization. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to validate the superiority of the proposed scheme over several baseline schemes.

Semantic communication is envisioned as a potential communication paradigm enabled by artificial intelligence and is promising to break the Shannon limit for future 6G networks. This paradigm benefits unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conserve communication resources and minimize latency by only transmitting task-relevant semantic information. However, resource allocation in the multiple collaborative UAV scenarios remains unexplored, particularly regarding multi-modal semantic communication. To tackle this challenge, this paper investigates a semantic-aware intelligent resource allocation method for multi-UAV-assisted semantic communication networks in the UAV image-sensing task-oriented scenario. A multi-modal semantic communication framework with multi-UAV relay collaboration is developed. At the semantic level, a novel quality of experience (QoE) and the transmission cost model are introduced, based on which a semantic-aware resource allocation problem is formulated, aiming to maximize QoE while minimizing the transmission cost by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, the spectrum bandwidth, the transmit power and the number of the transmitted semantic symbols. To deal with optimization challenges involving hybrid variables and coordination among UAVs, a multi-UAV hybrid decision-controlled deep reinforcement learning (DRL) scheme is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared with the benchmark schemes in achieving a good balance between the QoE and the transmission cost. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Software-defined Tactical networks (SDTNs) have the potential to host intelligent mechanisms to manage ever-changing communication scenarios in networks with heterogeneous radio links. However, standard SDN protocols, like Open-Flow, were designed for non-mobile, reliable, high throughput, and low latency networks. This fact motivated the present investigation, reporting experimental results to quantify OpenFlow's control overhead in two different network scenarios i) stable conditions with wired links and static nodes, and ii) a topology with mobile nodes in a vignette from the Anglova scenario. Our results suggest that standard OpenFlow has a poor performance over stable conditions and VHF radio links (i.e. high control overhead) and similar results were observed in a topology with nodes moving through challenging terrain. These experimental results support a discussion and an initial solution on open challenges towards SDTNs and how OpenFlow can adapt to different communication technologies, such as SatCom, UHF, and VHF by reducing the control overhead.

Factoring larger integers with fewer qubits via quantum annealing with optimized parameters

RSA cryptography is based on the difficulty of factoring large integers, which is an NP-hard(and hence intractable) problem for a classical computer. However, Shor's algorithm shows that its complexity is polynomial for a quantum computer, although technical difficulties mean that practical quantum computers that can tackle integer factorizations of meaningful size are still a long way away. Recently, Jiang et al. proposed a transformation that maps the integer factorization problem onto the quadratic unconstrained binary optimization(QUBO) model. They tested their algorithm on a D-Wave 2000 Q quantum annealing machine, raising the record for a quantum factorized integer to 376289 with only 94 qubits. In this study, we optimize the problem Hamiltonian to reduce the number of qubits involved in the final Hamiltonian while maintaining the QUBO coefficients in a reasonable range, enabling the improved algorithm to factorize larger integers with fewer qubits. Tests of our improved algorithm using D-Wave's hybrid quantum/classical simulator qbsolv confirmed that performance was improved, and we were able to factorize 1005973, a new record for quantum factorized integers, with only 89 qubits. In addition, our improved algorithm can tolerate more errors than the original one. Factoring 1005973 using Shor's algorithm would require about 41 universal qubits,which current universal quantum computers cannot reach with acceptable accuracy. In theory, the latest IBM Q System OneTM(Jan. 2019) can only factor up to 10-bit integers, while the D-Wave have a thousand-fold advantage on the factoring scale. This shows that quantum annealing machines, such as those by D-Wave, may be close to cracking practical RSA codes, while universal quantum-circuit-based computers may be many years away from attacking RSA.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of IoT-Over-LEO Satellite Systems Under Realistic Operational Constraints: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

The growing demand for reliable and extensive connectivity has made low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites aided Internet of Things (IoT) systems a critical area of research. However, current theoretical studies on IoT-over-LEO satellite systems often rely on unrealistic assumptions, such as infinite terrestrial areas and omnidirectional satellite coverage, leaving significant gaps in theoretical analysis for more realistic operational constraints. These constraints involve finite terrestrial area, limited satellite coverage, Earth curvature effect, integral uplink and downlink analysis, and link-dependent interference. To address these gaps, this paper proposes a novel stochastic geometry based model to rigorously analyze the performance of IoT-over-LEO satellite systems. By adopting a binomial point process (BPP) instead of the conventional Poisson point process (PPP), our model accurately characterizes the geographical distribution of a fixed number of IoT devices in a finite terrestrial region. This modeling framework enables the derivation of distance distribution functions for both the links from the terrestrial IoT devices to the satellites (T-S) and from the satellites to the Earth station (S-ES), while also accounting for limited satellite coverage and Earth curvature effects. To realistically represent channel conditions, the Nakagami fading model is employed for the T-S links to characterize diverse small-scale fading environments, while the shadowed-Rician fading model is used for the S-ES links to capture the combined effects of shadowing and dominant line-of-sight paths. Furthermore, the analysis incorporates uplink and downlink interference, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of system performance. The accuracy and effectiveness of our theoretical framework are validated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The collaboration of computing powers (CPs) among unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-mounted edge servers is essential to handle data-intensive tasks of user equipments (UEs). This paper presents a multi-UAV computing power network (CPN) that orchestrates the CP resources of edge servers to cooperatively process tasks through collaborative computing. Due to the frequent interactions among edge servers and the increased complexities for large-scale task executions, we propose a digital twin (DT)-driven multi-UAV CPN framework, where the aerial DT network is created as a digital replica of the multi-UAV network to assist collaborative computing. A joint optimization problem of the service association, offloading power control, task partitions, CP allocation, and UAV trajectory design is formulated to minimize the long-term average delay of UEs. We use the Lyapunov technique to tackle the long-term energy constraint, forming a tractable optimization problem, which is modeled as a Markov decision process to balance the UAV's deficit queue stability and the UE's task completion delay. A hybrid soft actor-critic based deep reinforcement learning algorithm is developed to optimize the joint design by sampling the hybrid action from the Gumbel and Gaussian distributions. Simulation results verify that the multi-UAV CPN contributes to significant performance gains when supported by DTs. © 2025 IEEE.

Accurate control of quantum states is crucial for quantum computing and other quantum technologies. In the basic scenario, the task is to steer a quantum system towards a target state through a sequence of control operations. Determining the appropriate operations, however, generally requires information about the initial state of the system. Gathering this information becomes increasingly challenging when the initial state is not a priori known and the system’s size grows large. To address this problem, we develop a machine-learning algorithm that uses a small amount of measurement data to construct its internal representation of the system’s state. The algorithm compares this data-driven representation with a representation of the target state, and uses reinforcement learning to output the appropriate control operations. We illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm showing that it achieves accurate control of unknown many-body quantum states and non-Gaussian continuous-variable states using data from a limited set of quantum measurements. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Beyond universal attack detection for continuous-variable quantum key distribution via deep learning

Removing quantum hacking attacks is a highly challenging task for quantum key distribution (QKD) since one needs to correctly detect the types of attacks. There is a big gap between the idealized theoretical model and the practical physical system, which results in various hacking strategies exploited from security loopholes. To bridge this gap, previous continuous-variable (CV) QKD systems adopted a universal statistical model to represent different dimensional characters of the physical layer. The challenge is to discriminate different attacks from the exposed key physical details. Here we present a semisupervised deep-learning method to detect the known attacks or potential threats that are hard to be captured in previous CVQKD systems. The proof-of-principle experiment result shows that it could break the present limitations that different attacks are relatively independent, and key features computed from previous threshold-based methods are not correlated with each other. We anticipate that our proposal will give insight into how quantum hacking attacks can be detected under the real system modeling constraints, and will enable the present quantum communication systems to reach a higher level of practical security without adding new assumptions.

Multi-view data are commonly encountered in data mining applications. Effective extraction of information from multi-view data requires specific design of clustering methods to cater for data with multiple views, which is non-trivial and challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel one-step multi-view clustering method by exploiting the dual representation of both the common and specific information of different views. The motivation originates from the rationale that multi-view data contain not only the consistent knowledge between views but also the unique knowledge of each view. Meanwhile, to make the representation learning more specific to the clustering task, a one-step learning framework is proposed to integrate representation learning and clustering partition as a whole. With this framework, the representation learning and clustering partition mutually benefit each other, which effectively improves the clustering performance. Results from extensive experiments conducted on benchmark multi-view datasets clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Online programming system for robotic fillet welding in Industry 4.0

Purpose - Fillet welding is one of the most widespread types of welding in the industry, which is still carried out manually or automated by contact. This paper aims to describe an online programming system for noncontact fillet welding robots with "U"- and "L"-shaped structures, which responds to the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, the authors propose an online robot programming methodology that eliminates unnecessary steps traditionally performed in robotic welding, so that the operator only performs three steps to complete the welding task. First, choose the piece to weld. Then, enter the welding parameters. Finally, it sends the automatically generated program to the robot. Findings - The system finally managed to perform the fillet welding task with the proposed method in a more efficient preparation time than the compared methods. For this, a reduced number of components was used compared to other systems: a structured light 3 D camera, two computers and a concentrator, in addition to the six-axis industrial robotic arm. The operating complexity of the system has been reduced as much as possible. Practical implications - To the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no scientific or commercial evidence of an online robot programming system capable of performing a fillet welding process, simplifying the process so that it is completely transparent for the operator and framed in the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Its commercial potential lies mainly in its simple and low-cost implementation in a flexible system capable of adapting to any industrial fillet welding job and to any support that can accommodate it.
