An active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user downlink communication system is investigated, where non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is employed to improve spectral efficiency, and the active RIS is powered by energy harvesting (EH). The problem of joint control of the RIS’s amplification matrix and phase shift matrix is formulated to maximize the communication success ratio with considering the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users, dynamic communication state, and dynamic available energy of RIS. To tackle this non-convex problem, a cascaded deep learning algorithm namely long short-term memory-deep deterministic policy gradient (LSTM-DDPG) is designed. First, an advanced LSTM based algorithm is developed to predict users’ dynamic communication state. Then, based on the prediction results, a DDPG based algorithm is proposed to joint control the amplification matrix and phase shift matrix of the RIS. Finally, simulation results verify the accuracy of the prediction of the proposed LSTM algorithm, and demonstrate that the LSTM-DDPG algorithm has a significant advantage over other benchmark algorithms in terms of communication success ratio performance. A new method for extending rate equation based VCSEL model with multimode spectral characteristic

An accurate VCSEL model is important to evaluate the performance of VCSEL-based high speed short range optical interconnect system. Current VCSEL models show no evidence of the multimode spectral characteristic, which leads to an inaccurate performance estimation of VCSEL-based high speed optical interconnect system especially with large chromatic dispersion. To overcome this problem, we propose a new method to introduce multimode spectral characteristic into current VCSEL models, which extends the spatiotemporal multimode rate equations by calculating the wavelength shift of the VCSEL transverse modes. A VCSEL-multimode fiber(MMF) based short range optical interconnect simulation system is then built using our modified VCSEL model by VPItransmissionMaker. The symbol broadening and the BER performance of 15 Gb/s NRZ signal are tested in both left-tilted differential mode delay(DMD) profile MMF(L-MMF) and right-tilted DMD profile MMF(R-MMF). Simulation results validate our proposed method and indicate that the spectral characteristic is a key component for VCSEL models.

A quantum digital signature (QDS) is utilized to authenticate classical messages and offers information theoretical security guaranteed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Focusing on signing a one-bit message, previous continuous-variable quantum digital signature (CV-QDS) protocols that shared secret keys are generated by quantum key distribution, and it is only mentioned to suitably iterate the one-bit protocol for a multibit message. Although the CV-QDS protocol is unconditionally secure while sending single-bit messages, iterating the one-bit protocol in a naive way will allow some forgery attacks. In this paper, for signing one-bit and multibit messages, a CV-QDS protocol is proposed, on the condition that nonrepudiation and no forging are guaranteed. For one-bit and multibit schemes, we compare the difference in the distribution stage and messaging stage, analyzing the security as well as summarizing some formulas for calculation. We hope the protocol with continuous variables could further improve the performance of QDS.

In recent years, Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has been considered as a promising candidate of mobile front-haul networks, since it can provide high capacity for bandwidth-hungry enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) traffic. However, the EPON cannot support ultra-reliable and low latency communication (uRLLC) traffic, which is sporadic, highly unpredictable, and delay-sensitive. To address this problem, this paper devises a hybrid dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm, which treats the uRLLC traffic as high-priority traffic. In particular, the hybrid DBA algorithm schedules the uRLLC traffic in a competitive manner every other fixed time interval and polls the eMBB traffic in a round-robin manner. Our simulation results show that the hybrid DBA algorithm can work very well in the network with 16 ONUs.

All-optical analog-to-digital conversion is a paramount issue in modern science. How to implement real-time and ultrafast quantization to optical pulses with different intensities in an all-optical domain is a central problem. Here, we report a realtime demonstration of an all-optical quantization scheme based on slicing the supercontinuum in a nonlinear fiber. In comparison with previous schemes through off-line analysis of the power of different optical spectral components in the supercontinuum, this, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of such functionality online in the time ***, the extinction ratio among the quantized outputs can exceed 10 d B, which further confirms the feasibility of the proposed quantization scheme. The current 3 bit resolution in the proof-of-principle experiment is limited by the current experimental condition, but it can be expected to be greatly enhanced through improving both the spectral width of the generated supercontinuum and the number of filtering channels used.

Summary evaluation method is crucial to promote the development of summarization technologies. However, most of the existing summary evaluation methods seldom consider the content integrity and readability of summaries simultaneously. This paper proposed a Linguistic Quality and Semantic Similarity Model (LQSSM) to evaluate generated summaries more comprehensively. Considering the readability of summaries, a linguistic quality evaluation network (LQEN) is proposed to evaluate summaries automatically. Meanwhile, a semantic similarity evaluation network (SSEN) is introduced to directly measure the informativeness between the summary and original . Additionally, there is also a comprehensive evaluation using fusion indicators. The LQSSM and Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) methods were used to score the summaries generated by five models. The results showed that the proposed method gave further feedback from different angles on the basis of reaching the level of other methods. © 2020 IEEE.

Recent developments in resonator-based Kerr frequency combs promise excellent applications in a wide range of fields such as biosensing, spectroscopy, optical communications, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), frequency synthesis, astronomical detection, and quantum optics. A key figure of merit (FOM) for Kerr frequency combs is the pump-to-comb conversion efficiency, which is critical for applications requiring sufficient comb power and low power consumption. In this review, we first discuss the limited conversion efficiency of dissipative Kerr soliton in an anomalous dispersion microresonator based on its underlying physical characteristics. And then, we summarize the recent advances in Kerr frequency combs with high conversion efficiencies in both anomalous and normal dispersion regimes. We classify them according to various soliton states, excitation methods as well as novel material platforms. The final section of the paper presents an overview of current progress and glances at potential directions for future research.

Customized slicing for 6G: Enforcing artificial intelligence on resource management

Next generation wireless networks are expected to support diverse vertical industries and offer countless emerging use cases. To satisfy stringent requirements of diversified services, network slicing is developed, which enables service-oriented resource allocation by tailoring the infrastructure network into multiple logical networks. However, there are still some challenges in cross-domain multi-dimensional resource management for end-to-end (E2E) slices under the dynamic and uncertain environment. Trading off the revenue and cost of resource allocation while guaranteeing service quality is significant to tenants. Therefore, this article introduces a hierarchical resource management framework, utilizing deep reinforcement learning in admission control of resource requests from different tenants and resource adjustment within admitted slices for each tenant. Particularly, we first discuss the challenges in customized resource management of 6G. Second, the motivation and background are presented to explain why artificial intelligence (AI) is applied in resource customization of multi-tenant slicing. Third, E2E resource management is decomposed into two problems, multi-dimensional resource allocation decision based on slice-level feedback and real-time slice adaption aimed at avoiding service quality degradation. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of AI-based customized slicing. Finally, several significant challenges that need to be addressed in practical implementation are investigated.
