M2M Potentials in logistics and transportation industry

All over the world, road congestion is among the most prevalent transport challenges usually in urban environments which not only increases fuel consumption and emission of harmful gases, but also causes stress for the drivers. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) enables a better use of the infrastructure by connecting vehicles to other vehicles as well as infrastructure and thus delivers a faster communication opportunity to ensure safe and secure driving. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is one of the latest information and communication technologies which offers ubiquitous connectivity among several smart devices. The use of mobile (cellular) M2M communications has emerged due to the wide range, high reliability, increased data rates, decreased costs as well as easy and short-term deployment opportunities. Since the radio spectrum is a scarce resource, M2M traffic can potentially degrade the performance of mobile networks due to the large number of devices sending small-sized data. This paper presents an efficient data multiplexing scheme by using Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-Advanced) Relay Nodes, which aggregates M2M traffic to maximize radio resource utilization. Extensive system-level simulations are performed using an LTE-Advanced-based model developed in the RIVERBED modeler to evaluate the performance of the proposed data multiplexing scheme. Simulation results show that approximately 40 % more smart M2M devices used in ITS and logistics are served per LTE-Advanced cell under the present system settings. © 2016, The Author(s).

We study the impact of the finite-size effect on the continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocol, mainly considering the finite-size effect on the parameter estimation procedure. The central-limit theorem and maximum likelihood estimation theorem are used to estimate the parameters. We also analyze the relationship between the number of exchanged signals and the optimal modulation variance in the protocol. It is proved that when Charlie's position is close to Bob, the CV-MDI QKD protocol has the farthest transmission distance in the finite-size scenario. Finally, we discuss the impact of finite-size effects related to the practical detection in the CV-MDI QKD protocol. The overall results indicate that the finite-size effect has a great influence on the secret-key rate of the CV-MDI QKD protocol and should not be ignored.

This paper presents the validation of a rule-based control strategy trying to maximize the self-consumption of PV-converted power and providing frequency containment reserve power at the same time with a battery energy storage system placed in a residential household with roof-top PV-plant. The single model of a residential household is integrated in a simulation model of a virtual battery energy storage system for providing 1 MW frequency containment reserve power composed of 65 centrally coordinated battery energy storage systems with a local rule-based control strategy. We decided to set up a simulation model to be able to realize a high time-resolution. For its validation we set up an optimization model to compare simulation and optimization results. In conclusion, the comparison shows differences of optimization and simulation, but no inexplicable differences. Thus, the validation underlines the successful modeling of the virtual battery energy storage system.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted much recent attention owing to its capability for improving the system spectral efficiency in wireless communications. Deploying NOMA in heterogeneous network can satisfy users' explosive data traffic requirements, and NOMA will likely play an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks. However, NOMA brings new technical challenges on resource allocation due to the mutual cross-tier interference in heterogeneous networks. In this article, to study the tradeoff between data rate performance and energy consumption in NOMA, we examine the problem of energy-efficient user scheduling and power optimization in 5G NOMA heterogeneous networks. The energy-efficient user scheduling and power allocation schemes are introduced for the downlink 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) respectively. Simulation results show that the resource allocation schemes can significantly increase the energy efficiency of 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for both cases of perfect CSI and imperfect CSI. This article analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of current data communication mechanism among multiple virtual machines. Combining the characteristics of the cloud platform openstack, this paper puts forward a method to make the communication of virtual machines more efficient by using para-virtualization. Through the shared memory we can break down the communication barriers among the virtual machines and reduce the number of data copy times in the process of data transferring. Experiments show that the communication efficiency of multiple virtual machines gets higher. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

With the rapid development of mobile communication technology, the short message is playing a more and more important role in the daily life. Most of existing clustering algorithms are hard to be applied in dealing with massive short message due to the huge scale of data and similarity. This paper presents an efficient clustering algorithm by taking a special method to build feature string and a reasonable selection of cluster number. Experiments show that the clustering system based on this algorithm can depose millions of short message per hour with high precision and recall. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

This paper first analyzes the existing methods for identifying popular keywords. By studying the methods on how to define the popular keywords with their occurrence frequency, a new approach to analyze the keyword popularity will be proposed. The paper first built a new model based on the Hidden Markov Model, then introduced several parameters who impacts the feature of the model and described how the model works. Using the Stirling formula and the Viterbi algorithm to simplify the calculation. Adjusting the model’s parameters by comparing the experimental results and the output of the system. Finally, obtained a higher accuracy, effective keyword popularity analysis system. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Toward QoE-driven Dynamic Control Scheme Switching for Time-Delayed Teleoperation Systems: A dedicated case study

— Networked teleoperation with haptic feedback is a prime example for the emerging Tactile Internet, which requires a careful orchestration of haptic communication and control. One major challenge in this context is how to maximize the user’s quality-of-experience (QoE) while ensuring at the same time the stability of the global control loop in the presence of communication delay. In this paper, we propose a dynamic control scheme switching strategy for teleoperation systems, which maximizes the QoE for time-varying communication delay. In order to validate the feasibility of the proposed approach, we perform a dedicated case study for a virtual teleoperation environment consisting of a one-dimensional spring-damper system, and conduct extensive subjective tests under various delay conditions for two control schemes: (1) teleoperation with the time-domain passivity approach (TDPA), which is highly delay-sensitive but supports highly dynamic interaction between the operator and a potentially quickly changing remote environment;(2) model-mediated teleoperation (MMT), which is tolerable to relatively larger communication delays, but unsuitable for quickly changing, highly dynamic remote environments. For both schemes, we use recently proposed extensions, which incorporate perceptual data reduction to reduce the required packet rate between the operator and the teleoperator. One key contribution of this paper lies in the exploration of the intrinsic relationship among QoE, communication delay and the control schemes which provides a fundamental guidance, not only to this research, but also to the future joint optimization of communication and control for time-delayed teleoperation systems.
