Although the level of realism in vehicular network simulation is constantly increasing, antenna radiation patterns have only rarely entered the picture. In this paper we investigate the impact of these antenna patterns on the outcome of a city-wide simulation with hundreds of cars as well as an isolated intersection collision avoidance scenario. We show that in both cases pronounced differences can be observed: Compared to idealistic isotropic antennas, using realistic antennas changes the distribution of angle of arrival, affecting network topology dynamics. In collision avoidance applications, the antenna radiation pattern can make the difference between a crash and a successful emergency brake, strongly indicating that antenna characteristics should find more consideration in vehicular network simulation.

Elastic optical networks (EONs) are considered as the most promising technology for interconnecting data centers. With the rapid growth of inter-datacenter traffic, power consumption of EONs becomes a significant challenge. In this work, we present a lightpath management algorithm that uses traffic prediction techniques to eliminate unnecessary lightpath termination and re-establishment so as to decrease switching power and enhance the energy efficiency of the network. Our algorithm builds upon the centralized control and capabilities of software defined networking (SDN) technology. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in achieving substantial savings in power consumption while maintaining a bandwidth blocking ratio at levels comparable to those of earlier algorithms.

There are many regions in the developing world that suffer from poor infrastructure and lack of connection to the Internet and Public Switched Telephone networks (PSTN). Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) is a technology that has been advocated for providing store-and-forward network connectivity in these regions over the past few years. DTN often relies on human mobility in one form or another to support transportation of DTN data. This presents a socio-technical problem related to organizing how the data should be transported. In some situations the demand for DTN traffic can exceed that which is possible to support with human mobility, so alternative mechanisms are needed. In this paper we propose using live carrier pigeons (columba livia) to transport DTN data. Carrier pigeons have been used for transporting packets of information for a long time, but have not yet been seriously considered for transporting DTN traffic. We provide arguements that this mode of DTN data transport provides promise, and should receive attention from research and development projects. We provide an overview of pigeon characteristics to analyze the feasibility of using them for data transport, and present simulations of a DTN network that utilizes pigeon transport in order to provide an initial investigation into expected performance characteristics.

The article considers the efficiency of routing protocols for wireless mesh networks. Routing protocols are crucial element for performance of mesh networks, they ensure even flow of data packets and reduce negative influence of interferences. The article contains an overview of routing protocols used in the network mesh. As part of the research includes a comparative analysis of representative routing protocols carried out in the OMNeT++ environment. Results of simulation has been presented and compared.
