Three-Step Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Algorithm for Burst-Mode communications*

A data-aided frequency offset estimation algorithm suited for burst-mode communications is described and analyzed. The proposed algorithm is based on a Pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) frame structure, which consists of regularly spaced pilot symbols and a group of consecutive pilot symbols embedded in. Firstly, an initial estimate based on consecutive pilot symbols is generated for reducing the phase ambiguity. Secondly, based on both spaced and consecutive pilot symbols, fine preliminary estimates are generated to improve estimation accuracy. Lastly, the final estimate is obtained by combining the fine preliminary estimates with the initial. This three-step algorithm is shown to provide high estimation accuracy close to those of FFT-based algorithm at low Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In addition, it is suitable for high carrier frequency offset cases.

In this paper, we adopt a powerful deep neural network (DNN) to tackle the problems of detecting car license plates (LPs) and recognizing Arabic letters in natural scene images. Our Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system is built using state-of-the-art methodologies and techniques to provide the optimal speed/accuracy trade-off at each level. Images of vehicles and Moroccan and European LPs were used to train the neural networks. The system was able to correctly detect and recognize in the test set all the characters existing in a LP with an accuracy of 91.11% and 98.89% taking into account that only one character is misread. Using a high-end GPU, our system likewise produced outstanding real-time execution results. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The expansion of renewable energies requires implementing Smart Grid Services (SGSs) in the distribution grid. Analytical verification of the SGSs’ Quality of Service (QoS) requirements is crucial for reliable operation. This paper proposes a two-step approach: a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) considers network infrastructure and resource allocations to find candidates’ solutions. Then, the solutions are evaluated using Network Calculus (NC) to calculate delay bounds at the worst-case and compare them to the requirements. If necessary, alternative solutions are generated. The NC framework is adjustable and considers different service priorities by implementing scheduling policies such as strict priority, weighted fair queuing, weighted round robin, and deficit round robin. In the end, the best-performing parameters are derived for a sample network and the results manifest that the NC framework can be used to analyze random communication networks.

The beamforming performance of the uniform circular array (UCA) in near-field wideband communication systems is investigated. Firstly, the unique beam squint effect in near-field wideband UCA systems is analyzed in both the distance and angular domains. It is demonstrated that the generated beams at different frequencies are focused at different locations, resulting in significant beamforming loss. To alleviate this unique beam squint effect and facilitate beamfocusing, an energy-efficient beamforming scheme based on the true-time delay (TTD) architecture is proposed. Specifically, the phase shifters (PSs) and the time delay of TTDs are designed based on the analytical formula for beamforming gain. Additionally, the minimum number of TTDs required to achieve a predetermined beamforming gain while minimizing energy consumption is quantified. Numerical results show that the proposed beamforming scheme effectively eliminates the near-field beam squint and outperforms the conventional schemes in terms of spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Gigascale antenna arrays (3 to 4 orders of magnitude more elements than the largest ever built) are a critical component of proposed space-based solar power (SBSP) systems. The transmitting antenna arrays in orbit are expected to be up to 3 km 2 , while the receiving arrays on Earth have been proposed at up to 77 km 2 . There are many challenges and risks in the design, modelling, operation and deployment of the gigascale antenna arrays in the SBSP system. This paper highlights these challenges and risks, reviews existing solutions and proposes novel approaches.

Globally, the trend of industrialization, informatization and intelligence is profoundly affecting various industries, among which the automotive, avionics, and industrial automation fields, which have stringent latency requirements, are in urgent need of network communications with deterministic low-latency characteristics. In this context, the Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard proposed by the IEEE 802.1 Working Group is considered to be the most promising solution. Although the application of TSN in traffic scheduling algorithms shows diverse and innovative features, it still lacks deep integration with the core mechanism of TSN system architecture. In this paper, we innovatively combine the time-aware shaper standard in the time-sensitive network protocol cluster with existing theories, and this pioneering integration aims to deeply explore the core potential of the TSN architecture. Ultimately, experiments demonstrate that the schedulability of this method is significantly improved compared to the standard time-triggered message scheduling approach.

Exploiting random access for the underlying connectivity provisioning has great potential to incorporate massive machine-type communication(MTC)devices in an Internet of Things(Io T)***,massive access attempts from versatile MTC devices may bring congestion to the IIo T network,thereby hindering service increasing of IIo T *** this paper,an intelligence enabled physical(PHY-)layer user signature code acquisition(USCA)algorithm is proposed to overcome the random access congestion problem with reduced signaling and control *** the proposed scheme,the detector aims at approximating the optimal observation on both active user detection and user data reception by iteratively learning and predicting the convergence of the user signature codes that are in *** crossentropy based low-complexity iterative updating rule is present to guarantee that the proposed USCA algorithm is computational feasible.A closed-form bit error rate(BER)performance analysis is carried out to show the efficiency of the proposed intelligence USCA *** results confirm that the proposed USCA algorithm provides an inherent tradeoff between performance and complexity and allows the detector achieves an approximate optimal performance with a reasonable computational complexity.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have made significant contributions to assisting wireless network communication. Recently, the integration of UAV and RIS has also garnered widespread research attention. The age of information (AoI) is an important evaluation metric for time-sensitive applications in the Internet of Things (IoT). This study investigates typical scenarios of UAV-RIS-assisted loT communication, considering the high coupling between UAV trajectories and RIS phase-shift variables. The RIS phase shift is solved first, followed by joint optimization of UAV trajectories and loT device scheduling using the soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the optimization performance of this algorithm surpasses that of baseline algorithms.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be regarded as reliable integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmitters due to their high mobility and strong line-of-sight links in upcoming sixth-generation wireless communications (6G). Since there exist inherent trade-offs between communication and sensing, their joint waveform design is an essential issue in UAV-enabled ISAC systems. However, the existing works for waveform design in UAV-enabled ISAC mainly neglect the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of joint waveform designed for both communication and sensing. In this paper, we consider this signal characteristic and develop a nonconvex optimization problem to minimize the weighted sum of multiuser interference (MUI) for communication and beam pattern mismatch for sensing in UAV-enabled ISAC systems, subject to the constraints of PAPR of signal, transmit power, and ideal beam pattern approximation. To solve such a complex nonconvex problem, we propose a multivariate cyclic iterative alternating direction multiplier method (MCI-ADMM) where the original problem can be decomposed into multiple sub-problems with different variables. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is valid for waveform design of UAV-enabled ISAC considering PAPR.

This paper introduces a conversational framework that enhances the usability of smart energy system simulations. This study is centered around OpenAI's Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a fine-tuned conversational model that allows users to communicate with the system in a natural way. Therefore, users can describe their simulation scenarios in plain language and GPT seamlessly translates these descriptions into Python scripts, used as inputs to the simulation environment, in our case, AnyLogic Simulation Software. Our framework is based on the i7-AnyEnergy core framework to compute distribution flows and relevant statistics. The proposed human-machine interface facilitates and accelerates simulation modeling, as demonstrated through the two scenarios we have provided in this paper. Overall, our conversational framework has the potential to significantly improve the user experience of smart energy system simulation environments. By simplifying the interaction between users and complex simulation models, we enable users to obtain valuable insights rapidly and more easily. © 2023 IEEE.
