For a rapid identification of viral epidemics a mobile virus detection is needed, which can process samples without a laboratory. The application of medical biosensors, at key positions with a high passenger volume (e.g. airports) became increasingly important as epidemic early warning systems. As mobile biosensors have to fulfill various demands, like a rapid analysis and a long battery lifetime, in this study we present a multi-objective computation offloading for mobile sensors. The ergodic information rate for Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing / Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access with amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in the presence of frequency offsets is evaluated. Unlike previous work, per-subcarrier adaptive power allocation is performed on each relay to optimize the system ergodic information rate. For a given frequency offset and total number of relays M, the AF ergodic information rate is proven to be a monotonically increasing function of α (the ratio of the power allocated to the source node and the total transmit power), implying that the maximum ergodic information rate can be obtained at α=1 (i.e., there is no cooperative relay). Furthermore, the proof of "cooperative relays cannot improve the AF ergodic information rate in a quasi-static wireless channel" is also provided in this letter.

Carrier- and data-blind recovery of the symbol timing is of paramount importance in digital receivers, i.e., detailed knowledge about carrier frequency and phase or any pilot sequences is not necessary for proper operation. In this context, feedforward algorithms are particularly useful in packet-oriented systems, where rapid and stable acquisition of the major transmission parameters is essential for subsequent processing stages. In the current paper, we propose a novel approach for blind estimation of the symbol timing, which needs just one or two samples per symbol. The new method is characterized by introducing a second filter in parallel to the receiver matched filter. Under Nyquist conditions, this filter exhibits an impulse response satisfying the extended zero-crossing property, i.e., it vanishes for all integer multiples of the symbol period, including the origin! Using this idea for a suitably designed timing estimator, it is shown that the annoying jitter floor - typical for most timing estimators and caused by pattern noise - can be avoided.

The embedding of logic circuits into the cellular spaces is an essential approach for efficient computing on asynchronous cellular automata (ACAs), which usually depends critically on the design of signals. Such signals are required to propagate definitely in predefined directions, and cross other signals coming from orthogonal directions without blockage. Adachi et al. (2004) constructed signals in an ACA with von Neumann neighborhood, which takes 5 states per cell and 24 transition rules. Unfortunately, two signals colliding with each other at the crossing point of paths may occasionally cause deadlock, due to the lack of adequate rules to cope with such a situation. This paper presents a novel 5-state ACA with von Neumann neighborhood that uses 64 rules, which allows reliable propagation and crossing of signals at all times.

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is employed by more and more video streaming services in the Internet. It allows to adapt the downloaded video quality to the current network conditions, and thus, avoids stalling (i.e., playback interruptions) to the greatest possible extend. The adaptation of video streams is done by switching between different quality representation levels, which influences the user perceived quality of the video stream. In this work, the influence of several adaptation parameters, namely, switch amplitude (i.e., quality level difference), switching frequency, and recency effects, on Quality of Experience (QoE) is investigated. Therefore, crowdsourcing experiments were conducted in order to collect subjective ratings for different adaptation-related test conditions. The results of these subjective studies indicate the influence of the adaptation parameters, and based on these findings a simplified QoE model for HAS is presented, which only relies on the switch amplitude and the playback time of each layer.
