It is often impractical to obtain global channel knowledge and conduct centralized optimization for wireless networks. We study distributed weighted sum-rate maximization (WSRM) in general MIMO interference networks, named B-MAC interference networks. It is desirable to exploit the structure of the problem to design distributed algorithms with high performance and low signaling overhead. We recently unveiled a polite water-filling (PWF) structure satisfied by all Pareto optimal inputs of important achievable regions of the B-MAC interference networks. The PWF offers an elegant method to decompose a network into multiple equivalent single user channels and thus, facilitates the design of distributed algorithms. Based on the PWF, we design efficient distributed algorithms which only need local channel knowledge and converge to a stationary point of the WSRM problem. For TDD networks, the duality inherited in PWF and the channel reciprocity are further exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. The proposed algorithms are shown by simulations to outperform the state-of-the-art.

An innovative resource allocation scheme is proposed to improve the performance of device-to-device (D2D) communications as an underlay in the downlink (DL) cellular networks. To optimize the system sum rate over the resource sharing of both D2D and cellular modes, we introduce a sequential second price auction as the allocation mechanism. In the auction, all the spectrum resources are considered as a set of resource units, which are auctioned off by groups of D2D pairs in sequence. We first formulate the value of each resource unit for each D2D pair, as a basis of the proposed auction. And then a detailed auction algorithm is explained using a N-ary tree. The equilibrium path of a sequential second price auction is obtained in the auction process, and the state value of the leaf node in the end of the path represents the final allocation. The simulation results show that the proposed auction algorithm leads to a good performance on the system sum rate, efficiency and fairness.

An excited-state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) has been demonstrated, which utilizes a rubidium electrodeless-discharge-vapor-lamp rather than an external pump laser. When the lamp is turned off, the lamp-based filter can be treated as a ground-state FADOF. The compact lamp based FADOF holds promise for realing a frequency-fixed diode laser systems (such as a 1529 nm laser for optical communication application) and a multi-frequency filters.

Recently collaborative relay systems have been studied to increase the spectral efficiency and extend the range of wireless communications. In this paper, we consider the collaborative relay beamforming (CRBF) for multiuser systems. In the proposed method, we select base station (BS) antennas for each user and optimize their CRBF weights under two different types of power constraints, which are the total relay power constraint and individual relay power constraints, by exploiting the notion of the maximization of the worst-case received signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR). The optimization problem of the CRBF weights can be efficiently solved using a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) *** derive an iterative CRBF scheme to jointly select the BS antennas and optimize the CRBF weights to maximize the worst SINR among all users. Simulation results validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the tradeoffs between the number of BS antennas and the number of relays in the CRBF system.

We present a realistic, yet computationally inexpensive simulation model for IEEE 802.11p radio shadowing in urban environments. Based on real world measurements using IEEE 802.11p/DSRC devices, we estimated the effect that buildings and other obstacles have on the radio communication between vehicles. Especially for evaluating safety applications in the field of Vehicular Ad Hoc networks (VANETs), stochastic models are not sufficient for evaluating the radio communication in simulation. Motivated by similar work on WiFi measurements, we therefore created an empirical model for modeling buildings and their properties to accurately simulate the signal propagation. We validated our model using real world measurements in a city scenario for different types of obstacles. Our simulation results show a very high accuracy when compared with the measurement results, while only requiring a marginal overhead in terms of computational complexity. © 2010 IEEE.

We consider a cognitive radio network in which multiple pairs of secondary users (SUs) communicate by a one-way relay node over orthogonal channels with the existence of an eavesdropper close to the destination. The transmit power of the relay needs efficient distribution for maximizing the sum secrecy rate of the SU pairs, meanwhile satisfying the interference constraint at the single primary user (PU). Specifically, we introduce two multi-object auctions, i.e. the Vickrey auction and the sequential first-price auction, to perform this power allocation problem. We prove the existence and give the general form of the only equilibrium for each auction. We also propose two algorithms based on the equilibriums, respectively. From the simulation results, we see that the system secrecy rate curve of the Vickrey auction gradually coincides with that of the optimal allocation with increasing power units, while the sequential first-price auction reflects more fairness.

In this study, the performance of surface plasmon resonance method incorporated with polypyrrole sensing layer was examined for detection of Cu (II) and Fe (III) ions in aqueous solutions. The polypyrrole was prepared by electro-oxidation method on a gold layer for the detecting low concentration ions (0.1, 1 5 10 20 ppm). The experiments carried out at room temperature, and each sample was flowed through the flow cell. A photodiode registered the SPR signals as the function of rotation angle and thickness of layers. For observing the association and dissociation processes, the experiments repeated more than ten times, and the sensorgrams were obtained. Furthermore, Langmuir model was utilized to describe the binding interactions of ions with the polypyrrole layer. The lower concentration detection limit was about 0.1 ppm and the terminal resonance angles were occurred after the 300 s. The sensor was also found to be more sensitive to the presence of Cu than Fe ions.

Interference is among of the most critical issues in wireless communication, especially in industrial application fields. Even though interference is rather well understood today, there is a lack of validated simulation models integrated with common network simulators. We present an integrated simulation and planning toolkit that allows us to estimate adjacent channel interference among multiple wireless networks such as IEEE 802.11 WLANs. We performed an extensive set of lab experiments not only to validate the presented simulation model but also to come up with quick lookup tables to be used for industrial network planning. The developed simulation framework provides very accurate physical layer modeling that is of utmost importance for WiFi planning in automation facilities. Not limited to the IEEE 802.11 protocols, the proposed interference model can be easily adapted for coexistence planning of WLANs and the IEEE 802.15.4 based WPANs in the 2.4 GHz band. Internet access networks in general and wireless mesh access networks in particular, are the bottleneck of today's communication networks and consequently most strongly responsible for determining the user satisfaction. The limited bandwidth and the fact that access network are most often used as mere bit pipes are however unfavorable for the users' quality of experience (QoE). The lack of application-specific service guarantees is especially inadequate in the face of an increasing degree of heterogeneity of Internet applications and their individual service requirements. Application and quality of experience resource management, Aquarema for short, addresses this challenge by enabling application specific network resource management and thereby improves the user QoE. This is achieved by the interaction of application comfort (AC) monitoring tools, running at the clients, and a network advisor which may trigger different resource management tools. AC quantifies how well an application is running and in particular, enables a prediction of the user experience, thereby allowing the network advisor to act upon an imminent QoE degradation. We demonstrate the appeal of Aquarema at the example of YouTube video streaming in a congested IEEE 802.11 based mesh testbed where AC-aware traffic shaping guarantees the successful video playback. © 2010 IEEE.
