We propose an efficient optical coupler to launch free-space signals into a dielectric dielectric waveguide via plasmonic structures with great field enhancement. A plasmonic concentrator composed of a subwavelength slit surround by periodic grooves is used to access and collect free-space light. The transmitted light is then unidirectional directed into a dielectric waveguide with a plasmonic Bragg reflector and a directional coupler. The free-space optical coupler is useful as it combines the plasmonic structure for optical signal access in subwavelength scale with the ultra-low loss dielectric waveguide for long-distance signal transmission and processing making use of nonlinearity.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) face several challenges such as architectural design and network protocol design issues. The capacity of WMNs is very limited, such as the result in an available singlechannel bandwidth system compared to a multi-channel system. Two problems affect the capacity of mesh networks;i.e. load balancing and interference. To support the mesh network infrastructure, it is necessary to balance the traffic load and reduce the interference. One important direction for improving the capacity of WMNs is to use multiple radio interfaces and multiple channels simultaneously. The proposed load balancing routing algorithm method provides the load balance for multi-radio mesh networks by using a good routing metric,which captures the differences in transmission rates, packet loss ratio, traffic load and intra/inter flow interferences. The simulation results of this study, which used the network simulation NS-2, showed the capacity improvement that helps distributing the traffic load for efficient resource utilization.

Dispersion properties of an optical medium can be greatly changed using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and other nonlinear effects. Thus, the group velocity of light pulse can be much smaller (greater or even negative) than light speed in vacuum, which is called slow (fast) light. Slow and fast light are very useful in optical processing, such as optical buffer, switching, and storage devices. Usually, slow and fast light cannot be generated simultaneously in the same medium. In this paper, we propose applicable level structures to generate controllable slow and fast light simultaneously at two frequencies, with the same polarization.

Reducing our power consumption is an urgent issue which has important economical and ecological benefits. By using femtocell technology the mobile network can become far more energy efficient than it is today. In this paper, we describe what femtocell technology is and introduce outdoor femtocell distribution strategies that can save the network power. We also compare the usage of typical short-range base stations in place of femtocells and show that femtocells are more efficient. The results of the introduced strategies show that significant power savings of up to 92% can be achieved on a per-macrocell basis if implemented.

Recently, a novel switch architecture is proposed to provide more scalable and lower delay service for the internet applications. But the structure is blocking and based on packet dividing. It causes serious performance degradation for most variable-sized packet switch application. In this paper, a new network code scheme is proposed to improve the packet loss performance of a two stage load-balanced structure based on concentrators. Analysis and simulation show that this network code scheme obviously cut down the packet loss of Load-Balanced Multi-path Self-routing switch while keeping the other good features of this structure.

The sim TD (Safe and Intelligent Mobility: Test Field Germany) research project is another step towards bringing Car-to-X technology to marketability. One of its envisioned applications is a Traffic Information System (TIS) based on self-generated maps for vehicles not equipped with digital maps. To assure reliable operation, the function itself, its performance and the effect of its input parameters was simulatively evaluated before it was validated on real vehicles. In this paper we demonstrate how to adequately parameterize and evaluate such a TIS. We find feasible values for the input parameters for the creation of self-generated maps to ensure solid operation of the function. We further contribute to the community and other projects using similar TIS deployments by introducing applicable metrics for TIS evaluation in general and show our findings for the simTD research project.

The use of arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) and erbium-doped-fiber amplifier (EDFA) enables long-reach passive optical network (LR-PON) to provide enormous bandwidth over large distance, but they also deteriorate receivers' bit-error rate (BER) performance. In this paper, the effects of AWG and EDFA on BER are studied with both short-term and long-term distance-aware wavelength allocation schemes, to balance the BER among ONUs at different distance. Simulation results show that average BER improves and the relative standard deviation decreases.
