The industry is constantly generating new data, allowing take advantage of their use to increase manufacturing efficiency through the reutilisation of operational *** such possibility is to use Artificial Intelligence (AI). While AI is heralded as a solution for industry efficiency and accuracy quandaries through process automation, its implementation grapples with the issue of inaccurate production data used for training, giving an erroneous *** article introduces a framework to facilitate the integration of AI tools within companies. The focus is on the accuracy of predicting normative times and selecting alternative routes when accuracy is low. This approach improves the price quotation prediction process, where using AI is practical due to time constraints. Making quick and accurate decisions is crucial for maintaining efficiency in *** elucidate the functionality, the authors have performed a case study in production for the framework’s validation. The wood production sector was selected due to its lower operational complexity than machinery construction, resulting in time savings in the planning *** study revealed that the prediction accuracy of AI was 70% on average for operations normative times. To improve this accuracy, the t-test method to classify operations was used. This approach eliminates operations with low AI prediction accuracy when making price quotations. EVOLUTIONARY DIVERSITY OPTIMISATION FOR THE TRAVELING THIEF PROBLEM

There has been a growing interest in the evolutionary computation community to compute a diverse set of high-quality solutions for a given optimisation problem. This can provide the practitioners with invaluable information about the solution space and robustness against imperfect modelling and minor problems' changes. It also enables the decision-makers to involve their interests and choose between various solutions. In this study, we investigate for the first time a prominent multi-component optimisation problem, namely the Traveling Thief Problem (TTP), in the context of evolutionary diversity optimisation. We introduce a bi-level evolutionary algorithm to maximise the structural diversity of the set of solutions. Moreover, we examine the inter-dependency among the components of the problem in terms of structural diversity and empirically determine the best method to obtain diversity. We also conduct a comprehensive experimental investigation to examine the introduced algorithm and compare the results to another recently introduced framework based on the use of Quality Diversity (QD). Our experimental results show a significant improvement of the QD approach in terms of structural diversity for most TTP benchmark instances. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is crucial for accurately understanding human emotions and intentions, making it a fundamental task in computer vision. Some studies have shown differences in facial expression patterns across different age groups. However, existing research on FER often overlooks the impact of age differences on model performance, leading to significant age bias issues and negatively affecting the overall performance of the models. To address this problem, we propose a FER framework based on Age-Group Expression Feature Learning (AEFL). Firstly, we adopt an age-group distribution guidance multi-branch to extract age-group expression features, thereby preserving the unique expression information within each age group. Next, we capture shared expression information among different age groups by learning global features from samples across all age groups. Lastly, we introduce an age-guided attention mechanism to enhance the representation of age-group information in the global features, mitigating the suppression of disadvantaged age-group information by advantaged age-group information in the global features. Experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly improves the recognition performance of disadvantaged age groups without compromising the performance of advantaged age groups, thus enhancing the overall model performance. Moreover, our method achieves state-of-the-art results on multiple large-scale facial expression benchmarks (RAF-DB, AffectNet-7, AffectNet-8).

Low rank representation and discriminant analysis-based models for peer-to-peer default risk assessment

Purpose: This study aims to assess the default risk of borrowers in peer-to-peer (P2P) online lending platforms. The authors propose a novel default risk classification model based on data cleaning and feature extraction, which increases risk assessment accuracy. Design/methodology/approach: The authors use borrower data from the Lending Club and propose the risk assessment model based on low-rank representation (LRR) and discriminant analysis. Firstly, the authors use three LRR models to clean the high-dimensional borrower data by removing outliers and noise, and then the authors adopt a discriminant analysis algorithm to reduce the dimension of the cleaned data. In the dimension-reduced feature space, machine learning classifiers including the k-nearest neighbour, support vector machine and artificial neural network are used to assess and classify default risks. Findings: The results reveal significant noise and redundancy in the borrower data. LRR models can effectively clean such data, particularly the two LRR models with local manifold regularisation. In addition, the supervised discriminant analysis model, termed the local Fisher discriminant analysis model, can extract low-dimensional and discriminative features, which further increases the accuracy of the final risk assessment models. Originality/value: The originality of this study is that it proposes a novel default risk assessment model, based on data cleaning and feature extraction, for P2P online lending platforms. The proposed approach is innovative and efficient in the P2P online lending field. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Evolutionary algorithms have been shown to obtain good solutions for complex optimization problems in static and dynamic environments. It is important to understand the behaviour of evolutionary algorithms for complex optimization problems that also involve dynamic and/or stochastic components in a systematic way in order to further increase their applicability to real-world problems. We investigate the node weighted traveling salesperson problem (W-TSP), which provides an abstraction of a wide range of weighted TSP problems, in dynamic settings. In the dynamic setting of the problem, items that have to be collected as part of a TSP tour change over time. We first present a dynamic setup for the dynamic W-TSP parameterized by different types of changes that are applied to the set of items to be collected when traversing the tour. Our first experimental investigations study the impact of such changes on resulting optimized tours in order to provide structural insights of optimization solutions. Afterwards, we investigate simple mutation-based evolutionary algorithms and study the impact of the mutation operators and the use of populations with dealing with the dynamic changes to the node weights of the problem. The article deals with the task of developing a mathematical model and its computer implementation, which connects the pH (acidity of the environment) with the factors on which it depends based on the analysis of interval data obtained during the study of the biogas plant. In the course of research, it was established that the pH of the substrate depends on the volume and structure of the raw material, as well as on the temperature in the bioreactor and the humidity of the bio-raw material. To construct this mathematical model, the suggested approach involves utilizing interval data analysis alongside parameter identification methods employing computational algorithms inspired by swarm intelligence in bee colonies. The results of experimental studies for a specific type of biogas plant are presented, and an interval model with guaranteed prognostic properties is obtained, which characterizes the pH of the environment depending on the specific type of dry and liquid part of bio-raw material and temperature. The obtained mathematical model is an algebraic nonlinear equation that can be used to determine the optimal volumes of raw materials of each type during the loading period depending on the temperature of the substrate in the bioreactor.

Niching-based Evolutionary Diversity Optimization for the Traveling Salesperson Problem

In this work, we consider the problem of finding a set of tours to a traveling salesperson problem (TSP) instance maximizing diversity, while satisfying a given cost constraint. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying niching to maximize diversity rather than simply maintaining it. To this end, we introduce a 2-stage approach where a simple niching memetic algorithm (NMA), derived from a state-of-the-art for multi-solution TSP, is combined with a baseline diversifying algorithm. The most notable feature of the proposed NMA is the use of randomized improvement-first local search instead of 2-opt. Our experiment on TSPLIB instances shows that while the populations evolved by our NMA tend to contain clusters at tight quality constraints, they frequently occupy distant basins of attraction rather than close-by regions, improving on the baseline diversification in terms of sum-sum diversity. Compared to the original NMA, ours, despite its simplicity, finds more distant solutions of higher quality within less running time, by a large margin. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Combining supervised learning and local search for the multicommodity capacitated fixed-charge network design problem

The multicommodity capacitated fixed-charge network design problem has been extensively studied in the literature due to its wide range of applications. Despite the fact that many sophisticated solution methods exist today, finding high-quality solutions to large-scale instances remains challenging. In this paper, we explore how a data-driven approach can help improve upon the state of the art. By leveraging machine learning models, we attempt to reveal patterns hidden in the data that might be difficult to capture with traditional optimization methods. For scalability, we propose a prediction method where the machine learning model is called at the level of each arc of the graph. We take advantage of off-the-shelf models trained via supervised learning to predict near-optimal solutions. Our experimental results include an algorithm design analysis that compares various integration strategies of predictions within local search algorithms. We benchmark the ML-based approach with respect to the state-of-the-art heuristic for this problem. The findings indicate that our method can outperform the leading heuristic on sets of instances sampled from a uniform distribution. © 2024, CC BY.
