This paper presents a rule-based approach for online Chinese character recognition without writing constraints on both stroke number and order. Stroke correspondence is accomplished based on rules predefined such that combinatorial exhaustion can be avoided for character matching. Stroke correspondence rules contain the basic stroke types and geometric features of strokes. Because rules are constituted by invariant structural features, wide handwriting variations can be accommodated. Utilizing the structural characteristics in Chinese characters, we represent the reference database hierarchically to reduce its data size. It only requires O(n log n) time to accomplish stroke correspondence between a template of n strokes and an input script using the hierarchical reference database. This approach is very suitable for those systems with very limited computing resource.

We propose an improved extendible hashing scheme and a bucket multi-versioning scheme that achieve a higher concurrency. In our improved extendible hashing, the global depth and directory entries are asynchronously modified to reduce lock conflicts on the directory. Furthermore, bucket multi-versioning enables read-only access to a bucket which is being split. Simulation studies show that these two methods provide an increase in speed in proportion to the number of processors and that they enable concurrent insertions and retrievals to be performed without either affecting the other.
In order to solve the speed problem and shallow reasoning problem met in current research in fault diagnosis expert system, this paper presents a model based parallel fault diagnosis expert system for energy managemen...

The eigenmodes in electromagnetic cavities, loaded with arbitrarily shaped dielectric materials, are computed by the edge element method. The computation shows that the well known 'spurious modes' no longer appear. Formulae are given and verified so that the number of zero eigenvalues, which come from del x H = 0, may be accurately predicted. Formulae for the order and density of the global matrices are given for a rectangular cavity regularly divided into bricks and tetrahedra, allowing an associated comparison between the contrasting edge and nodal element formulations. Comparison of the computed results with available theoretical and previously published data show the edge element approach to be a robust, accurate and effective method.

The Signal Processing Instructional Facility (SPIF Lab) is an experiment in using in interactive multimedia for teaching concepts related to linear systems theory and signal processing. The goals of the SPIF lab are to augment, enhance, and interconnect sophomore, junior, and senior level courses with the common thread of linear systems and transforms by unifying the experimentation medium. In this fashion, physical phenomenon is returned to the forefront of engineering education. The laboratory features powerful Mathematica Notebooks (a form of hypertext) and interactive applications that use dedicated DSP microprocessors.
