We study a temporal step size control of explicit Runge-Kutta(RK)methods for com-pressible computational fluid dynamics(CFD),including the Navier-Stokes equations and hyperbolic systems of conservation laws such as the Euler *** demonstrate that error-based approaches are convenient in a wide range of applications and compare them to more classical step size control based on a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy(CFL)*** numerical examples show that the error-based step size control is easy to use,robust,and efficient,e.g.,for(initial)transient periods,complex geometries,nonlinear shock captur-ing approaches,and schemes that use nonlinear entropy *** demonstrate these properties for problems ranging from well-understood academic test cases to industrially relevant large-scale computations with two disjoint code bases,the open source Julia pack-ages *** with *** and the C/Fortran code SSDC based on PETSc.

A novel adaptive multiple dependent state sampling plan(AMDSSP)was designed to inspect products from a continuous manufacturing process under the accelerated life test(ALT)using both double sampling plan(DSP)and multiple dependent state sampling plan(MDSSP)*** accelerated conditions,the lifetime of a product follows the Weibull distribution with a known shape parameter,while the scale parameter can be determined using the acceleration factor(AF).The Arrhenius model is used to estimate AF when the damaging process is *** economic design of the proposed sampling plan was also considered for the ALT.A genetic algorithm with nonlinear optimization was used to estimate optimal plan parameters to minimize the average sample number(ASN)and total cost of inspection(TC)under both producer’s and consumer’s *** results are presented to support the AMDSSP for the ALT,while performance comparisons between the AMDSSP,the MDSSP and a single sampling plan(SSP)for the ALT are *** indicated that the AMDSSP was more flexible and efficient for ASN and TC than the MDSSP and SSP plans under accelerated *** AMDSSP also had a higher operating characteristic(OC)curve than both the existing sampling *** real datasets of electronic devices for the ALT at high temperatures demonstrated the practicality and usefulness of the proposed sampling plan.

Energy production from solar photovoltaic (PV) plants is unpredictable, mainly due to the stochastic formation and movement of clouds or aerosol - dust particles which scatter or disperse solar radiation. Accurate forecasts of PV output are essential to Distribution and Transportation System Operators as they assist efficient solar energy trading and management of electricity grids. This work evaluates an autoregressive, computationally-light KNN-regression scheme (TSFKNN) for hourly, day-ahead forecasts of solar irradiance and energy yield of various PV technologies. The model is being tested and validated using data measured in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. The available measured records span a 60-month period. The developed forecasting models are designed for online systems and provide increased levels of accuracy and low computational cost. Several parametric and nonparametric specifications, coupled with conventional versus outlier-robust estimation procedures are tested, in order to derive an optimal month-specific daily profile (MDP). Current results demonstrate that including intraday variability to the monthly-based irradiance models achieve improved predictive accuracy between 10% and 25% on average. © 2022 IEEE.

A Novel Multiple Dependent State Sampling Plan Based on Time Truncated Life Tests Using Mean Lifetime

The design of a new adaptive version of the multiple dependent state(AMDS)sampling plan is presented based on the time truncated life test under the Weibull *** achieved the proposed sampling plan by applying the concept of the double sampling plan and existing multiple dependent state sampling plans.A warning sign for acceptance number was proposed to increase the probability of current lot *** optimal plan parameters were determined simultaneously with nonlinear optimization problems under the producer’s risk and consumer’s risk.A simulation study was presented to support the proposed sampling plan.A comparison between the proposed and existing sampling plans,namely multiple dependent state(MDS)sampling plans and a modified multiple dependent state(MMDS)sampling plan,was considered under the average sampling number and operating characteristic curve *** addition,the use of two real datasets demonstrated the practicality and usefulness of the proposed sampling *** results indicated that the proposed plan is more flexible and efficient in terms of the average sample number compared to the existing MDS and MMDS sampling plans.

Local Sequential MCMC for Data Assimilation with Applications in Geoscience

This paper presents a new data assimilation (DA) scheme based on a sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SMCMC) DA technique [36] which is provably convergent and has been recently used for filtering, particularly for high-dimensional non-linear, and potentially, non-Gaussian state-space models. Unlike particle filters, which can be considered exact methods and can be used for filtering non-linear, non-Gaussian models, SMCMC does not assign weights to the samples/particles, and therefore, the method does not suffer from the issue of weight-degeneracy when a relatively small number of samples is used. We design a localization approach within the SMCMC framework that focuses on regions where observations are located and restricts the transition densities included in the filtering distribution of the state to these regions. This results in immensely reducing the effective degrees of freedom and thus improving the efficiency. We test the new technique on high-dimensional (d ∼ 104 − 105) linear Gaussian model and non-linear shallow water models with Gaussian noise with real and synthetic observations. For two of the numerical examples, the observations mimic the data generated by the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission led by NASA, which is a swath of ocean height observations that changes location at every assimilation time step. We also use a set of ocean drifters' real observations in which the drifters are moving according the ocean kinematics and assumed to have uncertain locations at the time of assimilation. CONVERGENCE OF DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN METHODS FOR QUASICONVEX AND RELAXED VARIATIONAL PROBLEMS

In this work, we establish that discontinuous Galerkin methods are capable of producing reliable approximations for a broad class of nonlinear variational problems. In particular, we demonstrate that these schemes provide essential flexibility by removing inter-element continuity while also guaranteeing convergent approximations in the quasiconvex case. Notably, quasiconvexity is the weakest form of convexity pertinent to elasticity. Furthermore, we show that in the non-convex case discrete minimisers converge to minimisers of the relaxed problem. In this case, the minimisation problem corresponds to the energy defined by the quasiconvex envelope of the original energy. Our approach covers all discontinuous Galerkin formulations known to converge for convex energies. This work addresses an open challenge in the vectorial calculus of variations: developing and rigorously justifying numerical schemes capable of reliably approximating nonlinear energy minimization problems with potentially singular solutions, which are frequently encountered in materials science. © 2025, CC BY.

Physics-informed machine learning with smoothed particle hydrodynamics: Hierarchy of reduced Lagrangian models of turbulence

Building efficient, accurate, and generalizable reduced-order models of developed turbulence remains a major challenge. This manuscript approaches this problem by developing a hierarchy of parameterized reduced Lagrangian models for turbulent flows, and it investigates the effects of enforcing physical structure through smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) versus relying on neural networks (NNs) as universal function approximators. Starting from NN parametrizations of a Lagrangian acceleration operator, this hierarchy of models gradually incorporates a weakly compressible and parameterized SPH framework, which enforces physical symmetries, such as Galilean, rotational, and translational invariances. Within this hierarchy, two new parameterized smoothing kernels are developed to increase the flexibility of the learn-able SPH simulators. For each model we experiment with different loss functions which are minimized using gradient based optimization, where efficient computations of gradients are obtained by using automatic differentiation and sensitivity analysis. Each model within the hierarchy is trained on two data sets associated with weakly compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence: (1) a validation set using weakly compressible SPH; and (2) a high-fidelity set from direct numerical simulations. Numerical evidence shows that encoding more SPH structure improves generalizability to different turbulent Mach numbers and time shifts, and that including the novel parameterized smoothing kernels improves the accuracy of SPH at the resolved scales.

Various mechanical antennas have emerged to overcome the inherently narrower bandwidth and degraded efficiency in electrically small antennas. Among them, multiferroic antennas are expected to realize high-frequency applications and maintain their performance, even with significantly reduced sizes. However, experimental proof of such radiation from multiferroic or magnetoelectric coupling in the GHz range deserves further examination. This paper designs and fabricates a series of multiferroic antenna samples with mechanical resonances at around 3.5 and 6 GHz, and their radiation transmissions are tested at these resonances. Nickel, a magnetoelastic material, consistently exhibits magnetically induced radiation at both resonances. However, magnetic material consisting of Permalloy (Ni78Fe22), known for its much weaker magnetoelastic effects, still shows similar transmission behaviors at 3.67 GHz and enhanced power absorption at 6.42 GHz. Our results indicate that the dynamic response of magnetoelastic materials in the GHz band should differ from their response at the MHz and below bands. This evidence calls for further investigations of the source of magnetoelectric radiation. © 2023 Author(s).

Unbiased and Multilevel Methods for a Class of Diffusions Partially Observed via Marked Point Processes

In this article we consider the filtering problem associated to partially observed diffusions, with observations following a marked point process. In the model, the data form a point process with observation times that have its intensity driven by a diffusion, with the associated marks also depending upon the diffusion process. We assume that one must resort to time-discretizing the diffusion process and develop particle and multilevel particle filters to recursively approximate the filter. In particular, we prove that our multilevel particle filter can achieve a mean square error (MSE) of O(∈2) (∈ > 0 and arbitrary) with a cost of O(∈-2.5) versus using a particle filter which has a cost of O(∈-3) to achieve the same MSE. We then show how this methodology can be extended to give unbiased (that is with no time-discretization error) estimators of the filter, which are proved to have finite variance and with high-probability have finite cost. Finally, we extend our methodology to the problem of online static-parameter estimation. Bayesian Parameter Inference for Partially Observed Stochastic Volterra Equations

In this article we consider Bayesian parameter inference for a type of partially observed stochastic Volterra equation (SVE). SVEs are found in many areas such as physics and mathematical finance. In the latter field they can be used to represent long memory in unobserved volatility processes. In many cases of practical interest, SVEs must be time-discretized and then parameter inference is based upon the posterior associated to this time-discretized process. Based upon recent studies on time-discretization of SVEs (e.g. [24]) we use Euler-Maruyama methods for the afore-mentioned discretization. We then show how multilevel Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods [19] can be applied in this context. In the examples we study, we give a proof that shows that the cost to achieve a 4 mean square error (MSE) of O(ϵ2), ϵ > 0, is O(ϵ− 4/2H+1 ), where H is the Hurst parameter. If one uses a single level MCMC method then the cost is O(ϵ−2(2H+3)/ 2H+1 ) to achieve the same MSE.
