As the rapid growth of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and 5G intensifies, more third-party applications are increasingly being deployed on CAVs. They not only improve user experience but also provide more helpful services, for example, enhancing public safety by recognizing criminals in real-time videos. Current CAVs prefer to process collected data on the vehicle to avoid long transmission latency and extra network cost. However, due to the limitations of the on-board vehicle computing unit (VCU) and increasing use of computing-intensive in-vehicle applications, the burden of on-board VCU has sharply increased, which may affect driving safety. In particular, for existing vehicles on the road, adding more computing devices is a challenge if not impossible due to cost concerns. Inspired by edge computing, we propose a novel platform, MobileEdge, to enhance the computing capability of the unchangeable on-board VCU, which leverages mobile devices as edge nodes, e.g., the passengers' smartphones, by offloading computing tasks to them for collaboratively computing. Moreover, MobileEdge provides the dynamic management of mobile devices, monitoring device status and interfaces for customizable task offloading strategies and eventually achieves optimal task scheduling. We build a prototype to demonstrate the designed platform and evaluate three task offloading strategies which were implemented based on the developed interfaces. The results show that MobileEdge significantly reduces the application response latency. Compared with the baseline which does not employ task offloading, the response latency is almost near real-time when more computing resources are available. In addition, the proposed shortest response latency strategy outperforms the best overall task scheduling among the three strategies.

With the increasing of software complexity and user demands, collaborative service is becoming more and more popular. Each service focuses on its own specialty, their cooperation can support complicated task with high efficiency. To improve the resources utilization, virtualization technology like container is used and it enables multiple services running in the same physical machine. However, since the host physical machine is shared by several services, the resource competition is inevitable. Isolation is an effective solution, but the weak isolation mechanisms of container cannot handle such complicated scenarios. In the worst situation, the performance of services cannot meet the requirements and the system may crash. In order to solve this problem, we propose a priority-based optimization mechanism for I/O isolation after analyzing the characteristics of typical service workloads. Based on the real-time performance data, priority is automatically assigned to each service and corresponding optimization methods are applied. We evaluate the optimization effects of the priority-based mechanism in both static and dynamic workload cases, besides, the influence of different priority order is also analyzed. The experimental results show that our approach can indeed improve the system performance and guarantee the requirements of all the running services are satisfied. © 2019, ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Multifractal temporally weighted detrended partial cross-correlation analysis of two non-stationary time series affected by common external factors

When common factors strongly influence two cross-correlated time series recorded in complex natural and social systems, the results will be biased if we use multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis (MF-DXA) without considering these common factors. In order to better study the time series of such cases, we extend the multifractal temporally weighted detrended cross-correlation analysis (MF-TWXDFA) proposed by our group (Wei et al., 2017) and propose multifractal temporally weighted detrended partial cross-correlation analysis (MF-TWDPCCA) to quantify intrinsic power-law cross-correlation of two non-stationary time series affected by common external factors in this paper. To test the performance of MF-TWDPCCA, we apply it and multifractal partial cross-correlation analysis (MF-DPXA) proposed by Qian et al. (2015) on simulated series. Numerical tests on artificially simulated series demonstrate that MF-TWDPCCA can more accurately detect the intrinsic cross-correlations for two simultaneously recorded series than MF-DPXA and MF-TWXDFA. To further show the utility of MF-TWDPCCA, we apply it on time series from stock markets and find that there exists significantly multifractal power-law cross-correlation between stock returns. In addition, a new partial cross-correlation coefficient is defined to quantify the level of intrinsic cross-correlation between two time series.

One of the risk factors in skin cancer is unprotected exposure to UV radiation. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but also curable if it is diagnosed in the early stages. This study uses a histogram analysis technique to investigate and classify two common skin lesions, nevi and melanoma. The colour feature investigated is the optimal threshold values in RGB space. Also, a boundary limit of the skin lesions is performed using a colour histogram analysis and the optimal threshold determination. A statistical analysis of the relevant threshold values for R, G and B histograms to establish a sound colour separation between benign and malignant lesions is performed. Monochromatic channel threshold values are clustered using K-means and the validity of clustering is assessed by silhouette method. The proposed method technique is evaluated using 120 colour digital images (60 melanomas and 60 nevi) from the Digital Archive of the Department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG)1. The reported results suggest red as the lesion representative colour in dermoscopic images. The pixel values for red channel are strongly related to the skin lesion type. © SGEM 2019.

MRI images contain a lot of subtle information related to various lesions which are difficult to be picked up by radiologists. computer aided diagnosis CAD is a valuable tool to improve the ability of an average radiologist to diagnose the subtle lesions. This study uses the isolated foreground pixels in MRI images as a feature able to discern a stroke patient by a healthy one. Brain MRI image was divided into eight equal sectors. The isolated foreground pixels (i.e. pixels satisfying a neighborhood configuration that corresponds to an isolated foreground pixel) were extracted using hit-or-miss and skeleton transformations. We have tested the proposed algorithms using two cerebral image datasets (healthy and acute stroke patients). The mean SD values of isolated foreground pixels for stroke patients systematically exceed the corresponding values for healthy patients. The higher numbers of isolated foreground pixel determined using hit-or-miss transform indicate this method as a promising approach for a simple and quick evaluation of stroke. © SGEM 2019.

Two-phase heat transfer phenomena in a natural circulation loop during LOHS

The secondary loop (SL) of a Natural Circulation (NC) System serves as the coolant supply channel to the Heat Exchanger (HX) for effective passive heat removal by the NC system. Insufficient coolant or total loss of coolant along the cold leg of the SL will lead to a loss of heat sink accident (LOHS). This phenomenon negatively affects the heat removal capability of the HX. The experiment has now been carried out to investigate the loss of secondary loop coolant as it affects flow characteristics in the primary system of a natural circulation system under two-phase conditions carried out in a well-scaled down dimensioned NC loop having a single heated channel. Induced power of 9.0 KW and a 0.5 MPa system pressure were predetermined and maintained. Transient was activated by shutting down the inlet of the secondary loop (cold leg) and then NC flow behavior was observed in each test section along the flow centered on the predetermined conditions. When HX outlet temperature upsurges to around its inlet temperature, data recording is halted, and the experiment is brought to an end. The acquired data were analyzed at the inlet and outlet of both the heated sections and the HX in various flow regimes. While the transient scenario was activated, there exists transient stability in the NC loop with temperature increasing steadily and consequently descents into the instability region. Thereafter, NC flow drips into a stable two-phase flow, and subsequently, outlet temperature surges, and flow loses stability and purges into the two-phase instability region leading to CHF occurrence. This experiment is useful for more understanding of NC fluid behavior and further exploitation of the close NC rectangular loop in the event of LOHS accident.

In this work, we present a deep collocation method (DCM) for three dimensional potential problems in non-homogeneous media. This approach utilizes a physics-informed neural network with material transfer learning reducing the solution of the non-homogeneous partial differential equations to an optimization problem. We tested different configurations of the physics-informed neural network including smooth activation functions, sampling methods for collocation points generation and combined optimizers. A material transfer learning technique is utilized for non-homogeneous media with different material gradations and parameters, which enhance the generality and robustness of the proposed method. In order to identify the most influential parameters of the network configuration, we carried out a global sensitivity analysis. Finally, we provide a convergence proof of our DCM. ActivityNet-QA: A dataset for understanding complex web videos via question answering

Recent developments in modeling language and vision have been successfully applied to image question answering. It is both crucial and natural to extend this research direction to the video domain for video question answering (VideoQA). Compared to the image domain where large scale and fully annotated benchmark datasets exists, VideoQA datasets are limited to small scale and are automatically generated, etc. These limitations restrict their applicability in practice. Here we introduce ActivityNet-QA, a fully annotated and large scale VideoQA dataset. The dataset consists of 58,000 QA pairs on 5,800 complex web videos derived from the popular ActivityNet dataset. We present a statistical analysis of our ActivityNet-QA dataset and conduct extensive experiments on it by comparing existing VideoQA baselines. Moreover, we explore various video representation strategies to improve VideoQA performance, especially for long videos. The dataset is available at https://***/MILVLG/ activitynet-qa. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) and torque transfer play central roles in a wide range of magnetic textures and devices including skyrmions and spin-torque electronics. Analogous topological structures are now also being explored in ferroelectrics, including polarization vortex arrays in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices. Unlike magnetic toroidal order, electric toroidal order does not couple directly to linear external fields. Instead, we find that the presence of an electric toroidal moment in a ferrorotational phase transfers measurable torque and OAM to a localized electron beam in the ballistic limit. We record these torque transfers from a high-energy electron beam using a momentum-resolved detector. This approach provides a high-sensitivity method to detect polarization fields and their more complex order parameters and topologies. In addition to toroidal order, we also demonstrate high-precision measurements of vorticity and chirality for polar vortexlike phases.
