Famously, individual expert tutoring holds the promise of two standard deviations of improvement over classroom-based instruction. Current content-scaling techniques have been able to prove one standard deviation of improvement. However, just as expert tutors take the motivation and emotional state of the student into account for instruction, so too must computer instructors. Differences between individuals and individual baselines make this difficult, but this information is known across one training session. The construction of assessing modules in realtime, from the available performance and sensor datastreams, skirts these problems, but is technically difficult. This research investigates automated student model construction in realtime from datastreams as a solution from which to base pedagogical strategy recommendations. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

K-Means is the clustering algorithm which is widely used in many areas such as information retrieval, computer vision and pattern recognition. With the recent advance in General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU), we can use a modern GPU which is capable to do computation up to Tflops to calculate K-Means clustering on average problems. However, due to the exponential growth of data, the K-Means clustering on a single GPU will not be adequate for large datasets in the near future. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of an efficient large-scale parallel K-Means on GPU clusters. We utilize the massive parallelism in GPUs to speed up the most time consuming part of K-Means clustering in each node. We employ the dynamic load balancing to distribute workload equally on different GPUs installed in the clusters so as to improve the performance of the parallel K-Means at the inter-node level. We also take advantage from software distributed shared memory to simplify the communication and collaboration among nodes. The result of the evaluation shows the performance improvement of the parallel K-Means by maintaining load balance on GPU clusters.

The adoption of electronically formatted medical records, so called Electronic Health Record (EHR), has become extremely important in healthcare systems to enable the exchange of medical information among healthcare providers. To the best of our knowledge, no approach has yet administrated the access policies on the basis of different aspects and subject types in a flexible, scalable and cost-effective manner. We have thus focused on an efficient improvement of policy administration along with the application of ABAC. To achieve this, we believe that a desirable EHR access policy should be created on the fly based on the appropriate primitive policies. In this paper, we thus propose AAS-pada - the composition-based technique for EHR access policy administration on ABAC. Given a subject's attributes and a set of primitive policies, AAS-pada (i) selects the desirable primitive policies across five aspects corresponding to a subject's attributes. (ii) instantiates these primitive policies with the attribute values; and (iii) composes these instantiated primitive policies to form a desirable access policy. Our experimental results show that AAS-pada supports the coverage of all subject types with less investment on the initially created policies. Moreover, it has less impact when the edition of an individual aspect concern is required. Essentially, AAS-pada brings few contributions: flexibility, scalability and cost-effective in administrating the EHR access policies to various subject types.

computer clusters have become a main stream of high performance computing platforms. To harvest these high performance systems, cluster operating environment has pressed on an additional abstraction using virtualization technology. Specific problem solving environments are isolated at the operating system level where real executions are performed in virtualization domains. Virtualization technology helps not only increasing utilization of computing resources but also reducing configuration workload, administrative cost, application porting, and energy saving. In this work, we investigated an implementation of virtualization cluster. The experimental performance results of the virtualization cluster are presented. We describe a framework to adopt virtualization onto the clusters. The management of virtualization cluster is discussed. The definitions for the operations of virtual clusters are given. Based on these definitions, we proposed the virtual cluster scheduler where the newly introduced provisioning factors and the goodness factor extend flexibility in management of a cluster. The virtual cluster scheduler can be used as a basis of implementing virtual cluster management. The software layers for virtual cluster management are discussed and the job submission workflow is explained. The framework for organizing cluster resources in virtualization environment is described.

With increasing importance of 3D packaging systems, more and more dies will be stacked on top of each other and connected using through silicon vias (TSVs) and solder bumps. In-situ stress measurements near these bump pads are important to help understand the evolution of die stresses associated with the packaging process. Unlike piezoresistive doped Si sensors that require high-temperature processing, metal-based sensors use low-temperature fabrication processes. The sensor fabrication uses standard cleanroom processes such as UV lithography and physical vapor deposition. In this paper, thin-film micro-scale metallic (Ni/Cr) resistors have been studied with different design dimensions including gauge width, film thickness, and spacing between the lines in the serpentine pattern. Silicon test strips with sensors have been subjected to four-point bend testing, and finite-element simulations have been carried out to mimic the four-point bend testing as well as to determine stress contours where the sensors are placed.

Accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs) provide an inexpensive way of improving the performance of cluster systems. In such an arrangement, the individual nodes of the cluster are directly connected to one or more accelerator devices via PCI Express. This results in a static mapping of accelerators onto compute nodes, where each accelerator can only be accessed from exactly one compute node. While this static mapping enables efficient data transfers between a given accelerator and the compute node it belongs to, differing computational demands across jobs may, however, produce either underutilized accelerators or nodes whose computational demands cannot be satisfied with the number of accelerators available to them. In particular, smaller numbers of GPUs available per node may enforce explicit MPI parallelism across compute nodes where it is not necessary. To address this limitation, we propose a novel accelerator-cluster architecture in which network-attached accelerators are dynamically assigned to compute nodes. This allows not only their optimal utilization but also a more precise match between application requirements and accelerator hardware. We outline the general concept of our dynamic architecture and show that it can offer substantial benefits to certain classes of applications without significantly harming the performance of others. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a new method to render simplified 3D models of tubular bacteria and cytoskeleton structures based on least-squares non-uniform spline fitting of their surface shapes. The proposed method of abstracting the shape of a bacterium or cytoskeleton first locates its centerline, and then describes the bacterium or cytoskeleton as a surface swept by ellipses which are generated by least-squares nonuniform B-spline fitting. This method involves a substantially smaller description of B-spline knots and coefficients than a triangular mesh definition of vertices, edges, and faces. Our results show that the proposed method achieves a smooth surface simplification using less surface data and storage. Efficient visualization of these abstracted shapes can advance understanding of biological systems. © 2012 by Binary Information Press.

This paper presents an alternative approach, based on the transmission line theory, for determination of the attenuation constant (α), phase constant (β), characteristic impedance (Zo), refractive index (n), effective permittivity (ε) and effective permeability (μ) for active transmission line (TL) metamaterial. When active elements are introduced into the lossy TL meta-material, the gain acquired from the active elements should be evaluated quantitatively against the attenuation due to the loss in order to avoid ambiguities in determining the signs of the effective constitutive parameters. In stead of directly determining the characteristic impedance from S-parameters, we introduce the reflection coefficient as an intermediate quantity to assist solving the characteristic impedance. This paper shows demonstration of this method with an example of active TL metamaterial.

This paper introduces a new approach for visualizing multidimentional weather-direction-related time-series data sets called “3D Spring Model”. Spring Model is designed to visualize pattern behind large time-series weather data set and to clearify seasonal structure in the data. In addition, it supports visibility of seasonal shift and wind direction anomaly by direct comparison betweem successive spring cycles. The visualization contained three data types: (1) Weather parameter (such as windrun, temperature or rainfall etc.), (2) Wind directions and (3) time. We mapped the color to the model in such the way that it comply with human perception using color gradient. Level-Of-Detail scheme is applied and adjustable resulting different pattern time focus for users. Spring Model is highly self-contained for accumulative long term data. It is interactive, flexible and user-friendly. Spring Model is very well-suited to high computing power visualization environment. At the end of the paper, the observation of weather pattern in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand using Spring Model was proposed as the case study to present the model vast applications.
