Incompressible flow around a pair of circular cylinders in various staggered arrangements with heated upstream cylinder is investigated in this study. Three dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) has been performed with spatial discretization based on the spectral/hp element method with the Reynolds numbers of 200 and the Richardson numbers are varied from 0.05 to 2.0. The longitudinal separation to cylinders diameter ratio is set to 2.5 and 5.0 with transverse separation to cylinders diameter ratio is fixed at 1.0. The investigation focuses on the effects of buoyancy as well as cylinders placement on both flow structures and local heat transfer characteristics of both cylinders.

The global arrays toolkit is a library that allows programmers to write parallel programs that use large arrays distributed across processing nodes through the aggregate remote memory copy interface (ARMCI). In this study, we have further our investigation on the performance of a parallel application implemented with the global arrays toolkit on homogeneous grid computing environments. Two types of the homogeneous grid computing environments have been examined in this study. In order to fully take advantage of the global arrays toolkit, the topology-aware and multi-level parallelism have been also implemented in the evaluating application. We have found that the current implementation of the evaluating application outperform both MPICH-G2 and a typical global arrays implementations in all studied cases.

A Hohlraum-like configuration is proposed for realizing a simple compact source for neutrons. A laser pulse enters a tiny thin-shelled hollow-sphere target through a small opening and is self-consistently trapped in the cavity. The electrons in the inner shell-wall region are expelled by the light pressure. The resulting space-charge field compresses the local ions into a thin layer that becomes strongly heated. An inward expansion of ions into the shell cavity then occurs, resulting in the formation at the cavity center of a hot spot of ions at high density and temperature, similar to that in inertial electrostatic confinement.

This study preliminarily investigates the numerical application of both Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) (which has traditionally been used for non linear estimation) and a relatively new filter, Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) to the nonlinear estimation problem. The new method can be applied to nonlinear systems without the linearization process necessary for the EKF and it does not demand a Gaussian distribution of noise and what's more, its ease of implementation and more accurate estimation features enables it to demonstrate its good performance. Present experimental results and analysis indicate that unscented Kalman filtering UKF have shown better performances in presence of the severe nonlinearity in state equations. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

An innovative fixtureless test technique to study interfacial fatigue fracture in thin film stacks is proposed and implemented. Cyclic non-contact magnetic actuation is employed to supply the fatigue crack driving force along the interface between a released metal thin film cantilever and the supporting substrate. In-situ crack growth measurements with nanometer resolution are possible through electrical resistance monitoring of nano-scale metal traces that are located along the edge of the delaminating interface. Ti/Au nano metal traces are fabricated using electron-beam lithography and characterized to show stable electrical behavior. The fatigue test results were then used to assess the reliability of microcontact springs under fatigue loading for wafer probing applications.

computer clusters have become a main stream of high performance computing platforms. Multilevel computing engines are spanned across acceleration boards, multicore processors, multiprocessor boards, and computer clusters. Multicore technology have played major role in increasing density of parallel computing elements. To harvest these high performance systems, cluster operating environment has pressed on additional abstraction using virtualization technology. Specific problem solving environments are isolated at the operating system level where real executions are performed in virtualization domain. Virtualization technology helps not only increasing utilization of computing resources but also reducing configuration workload, administrative cost, application porting and energy saving. Multiple commodity operating systems are allowed to share conventional hardware in a safe environment. In this work, we investigate an implementation of virtualized computing cluster. Performance evaluation results of the virtualized cluster based on HPL is shown where the maximum of 20% performance degradation from virtualization overhead is observed. We describe straightforward approach to deploy virtualization onto the cluster. The management of virtualization images is discussed. The process of considering computational cluster resources in virtualization environment is described. The goal of this work is to show the virtualized resources running with production of virtual cluster environment.

In this study, we describe a state estimation method using neural networks. The developed method has been applied to the problem of estimating the parameter of a six degree of freedom (DOF) PUMA 560 Robot arm manipulator. The results obtained were compared with the conventional Extended Kalman Filter, showing an improvement in performance and robustness. From the simulations performed, it can be said that the neural filter proposed for the studied application is more consisted and convergent than the EKF filter. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

The advantage of hybrid programming of C+ + and MATLAB is both the powerful function of character operating in C+ + language and the convenience of matrix treatment in MATLAB. As the result, the mix-language programming is applied in structure reanalysis using combined approximations method. It is efficient and convenient to reanalyze the structure by running the application in ANSYS, thus the secondary development of ANSYS is achieved. At the same time, it provides a powerful approach to reanalyze large-scale structures.

Rich information from various data sources has been recognized for enabling people to perform an efficient decision-making and problem-solving. According to thousands of data sources and numerous information types available at the edge of the Internet, the discovery of all potential data sources are needed to facilitate the procurement of rich information. However, current P2P approaches are limited to the discovery of potential data sources in which the number of data sources does not cause tremendous consequences for decision-making and problem-solving. In this paper, we thus propose WindChimer, a partially centralized and controlled P2P system that hybridly combines network topology of structured and unstructured P2P systems. Our experiments showed that the partially centralized and controlled topology enables an efficient discovery of all potential peers as per a given information type. This was accomplished via (i) acceptable number of messages sent throughout the network; (ii) high messaging accuracy for propagating the message to potential peers; and (iii) effective scalability when adding more peers. However, it is currently applicable for low degree of transient peer population, and sustainable data sources of organizations only.
