In this paper, development of a virtual factory for steel making plants is discussed. Among various applications of virtual factories, we are focused on virtual commissioning. To reduce construction time and cost, control systems need to be test before installation. 3D shape models from 3D CAD are simplified to reduce the size and are used to visualize the behaviors of steel making plants. Virtual sensors and actuators with 3D shape and behavior models are connected to PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) to verify how control systems interact with mechanical facilities. The configuration of virtual commissioning systems is designed and a prototype is implemented for feasibility test in a steel making process. Also the performance for a verification of control systems is evaluated.

This paper considers nonlinear dynamical networks consisting of individually iISS (integral input-to-state stable) subsystems which are not necessarily ISS (input-to-state stable). Stability criteria for internal and external stability of the networks are developed in view of both necessity and sufficiency. For the sufficiency, we show how we can construct a Lyapunov function of the network explicitly under the assumption that a cyclic small-gain condition is satisfied. The cyclic small-gain condition is shown to be equivalent to a matrix-like condition. The two conditions and their equivalence precisely generalize some central ISS results in the literature. Moreover, the necessity of the matrix-like condition is established. The allowable number of non-ISS subsystems for stability of the network is discussed through several necessity conditions.

This work describes the use of clinical guidelines in public health care for decision support in a primary care record system. The clinical guidelines were used for decision support in primary care in order to improve the quality of electronic referrals to a hospital. Guidelines were developed by the specialists at the hospital, but the design and the development of the system was done in collaboration with general practitioners working in primary care. This paper sums up the findings from a study six months after the introduction of the decision support system, and is based on interviews with users in primary care. The work processes differed between the practices;General practitioners who wrote the referrals after the patient had left the office did not find the system as useful as the ones who wrote them when the patient was present. The general practitioners were reluctant to use guidelines that resulted in an additional workload in terms of providing the hospital with more information than before, but found the system useful as a support for assuring that they made the right clinical decisions. The guidelines were also seen as useful as a support for refusing to refer the patient to specialized care. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to advancements in lighting technologies new opportunities for application emerge. In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented. An implementation of an adaptive lighting environment is made in the domain of office work. For evaluation, experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and system architecture design are interviewed. Contributions are made with regard to the implementation of the adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. From the evaluation method insights in the fields of human-computer interaction, activity and context recognition and system architecture and (wireless) networking and in topics that span across these fields are gained.

From field-scale measurements to global climate simulations and remote sensing, the growing body of very large and long time series Earth science data are increasingly difficult to analyze, visualize, and interpret. Data mining, information theoretic, and machine learning techniques—such as cluster analysis, singular value decomposition, block entropy, Fourier and wavelet analysis, phase-space reconstruction, and artificial neural networks—are being applied to problems of segmentation, feature extraction, change detection, model-data comparison, and model validation. The size and complexity of Earth science data exceed the limits of most analysis tools and the capacities of desktop computers. New scalable analysis and visualization tools, running on parallel cluster computers and supercomputers, are required to analyze data of this magnitude. This workshop will demonstrate how data mining techniques are applied in the Earth sciences and describe innovative computer science methods that support analysis and discovery in the Earth sciences.

The paper addresses the increasing need for collaboration in the Norwegian health sector, and how collaborative systems can be designed to facilitate exchange and sharing of health information. An upcoming national health reform, the coordination reform, will have focus on how patients can get health services in, or closer to, their homes. The change in the cooperation processes between primary and specialized care will trigger the need for better collaboration platforms. design of electronic collaboration systems in health care has been challenging, and deployment of existing systems has been slow. This paper addresses how the Locales Framework can be used to do an analysis of the current situation and provide a basis for design of future collaborative systems. The framework seems to be adequate for analysis of collaboration processes in the health sector, and as a basis for establishing general recommendations for design of collaborative systems. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper addresses how Practice Consultants can act as boundary spanners [1], [2] in order to improve collaboration and knowledge sharing in the health sector. Practice Consultants are in this paper defined as General Practitioners (GPs) that work in part time positions at hospitals with issues that are related to collaboration between primary care and specialized care. They are often experienced and know the work processes in primary care well. Special attention is paid to how the Practice Consultant can have a role in deployment of systems the support electronic collaboration across organizational boarders. The electronic referral and discharge letter are used as examples of boundary objects that can be influenced by the Practice Consultants work. Their knowledge about the work processes in collaborating organizations can be important for improvement of the quality of care in the patient trajectory. © 2010 IEEE.
