Using OFDM and space-time coding to achieve asynchronous cooperative diversity has been proposed by Mei et. al. and Shin et al, where orthogonal space-time block codes, Alamouti code in particular, were used at relay nodes. This proposed space-time coding can not achieve the multipath diversity when the channels from nodes to nodes are frequency selective fading. In this paper, we also consider asynchronous cooperative communications where the channels are assumed to be frequency-selective fading. We design high rate distributed space-frequency codes to achieve both full asynchronous cooperative diversity and multipath diversities.

An analogue adaptive filter for dynamic response compensation of a load cell sensor is presented. The filter employs only transistors and therefore it can be integrated using standard digital CMOS technology, which is suitable for system-on-chip applications. To perform adaptive compensation over a wide range of measurand, a novel CMOS multiplier circuit was developed. The analogue adaptive filter has been designed and simulated using 0.35 urn 3.3 V BSim3v3 CMOS foundry models and found to achieve effective compensation.

In spoken dialogue applications dialogue management has conventionally been realized with a single monolithic dialogue manager implementing a comprehensive dialogue control model. We present a highly distributed system structure that enables the integration of different dialogue control approaches to handle spoken dialogues. With this structure it is possible to integrate multiple dialogue control models into a single working application in a flexible fashion. The main principle is that all the processing is distributed into many compact agents that focus on single tasks. The agents process the information independently and share all the information via shared information storage. We present the principles that enable such distribution. In addition, a multilingual example application, AthosMail, is presented.

The relation between the number of nodes in a ROBDD and the number of implicants in the disjoint cover of the function represented by that ROBDD is studied. We identify a class of functions for which there are disjoint covers such that a cover of a larger size can be represented by a ROBDD with a smaller number of nodes. This shows that the size of a ROBDD is not a monotonically increasing function of the size of the disjoint cover.

A new simple method based on artificial neural networks for calculating the mutual coupling coefficients between two identical probe-feed rectangular microstrip antenna elements with thin and thick substrates in E- and H-plane coupling configurations has been *** learning algorithms such as the backpropagation(BP),the deltabar -delta(DBD),the quick backpropagation(QP),the cumulative delta(CD) rules,and the genetic algorithm (GA) are used to train the *** mutual coupling coefficient results obtained by using the neural models are in very good agreement with the experimental results available in the literature.

As telecommunications service features become more plentiful, service providers are faced with the increasingly difficult task of providing consistent and high-quality service. A stumbling block along the path towards making available large numbers of complex and potentially highly customized features are the unwanted or unforeseen behaviour of these features when operating together. This problem, known as the feature interaction problem, is only compounded by the heterogeneity of service providers, service platforms, and feature implementations. Presented in this paper is a constraint-based approach for performing avoidance, detection, and resolution of these feature interactions in a run-time telecommunications environment, such as an intelligent network. This constraint representation centres around a framework for call resources, permitting structured access to each of the aspects of call functionality, allowing features to remain modular. The representation is further enhanced, beyond the basic finite state feature processes, by the maintenance of context information. The resulting call session information keeps track of information such as how a feature is being used, by whom it was invoked and when, and what other callers and features are currently involved.

The MOOSE approach to the engineering of embedded systems is discussed. MOOSE is a full lifecycle, model based approach which is based on extensions to object oriented technology to apply to both software and hardware. The paper describes how early lifecycle models that represent the logical behaviour and architecture of a system can be transformed into representations that allow implementation source for both software and hardware to be synthesised.

A branch-and-bound method for finding independently distributed probability models is presented. Such models attempt to capture expert preference by (inequality) order relationships and are useful for the development of decision support systems. Finding probability models with independent distributions can be formulated as a linear-constraint optimization problem with a dynamic cost function. A simplex-like algorithm was implemented for branching and bounding between two search spaces on finding the desired models. In these two search spaces, one encompasses all possible independent probability distributions, while the other encompasses all distributions that satisfy all probability order constraints.

For enterprises with products that are tailor-made to order, both the efficiency and the effectiveness of bid preparation are essential prerequisites to sustain competitiveness. Preparing bids efficiently means reducing effort and resources to a minimum, while effectiveness implies high average success rates at good profit rates. Various approaches and systems exist that focus on increasing efficiency in bid preparation, but support allowing one to improve the effectiveness of the process is lacking. In the face of this situation, an advanced decision support system allowing a sales executive to determine the optimum sales price has been developed within the DECIDE (DECIsion support for optimal biDding in a competitive business Environment) project (ESPRIT Project No. 22298). To ensure a sound scientific and technological base as well as the optimal practical use of the system, three research institutes and universities, two industrial companies with complex engineered-to-order products and a software vendor are co-operating in the project. This paper describes the approach and presents intermediate results.
