The smart grid allows its consumers to participate in producing cost effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly electricity. The consumers in a smart grid, for example, can plug their Electric Vehicles (EVs) into the grid to charge and discharge their vehicles' batteries. However, charging of the electric vehicles, especially during the peak periods, can adversely impact the grid performance. Thus, in this paper, the coordinated charging of the electric vehicles problem is tackled. A fuzzy logic-based approach is developed to coordinate the electric vehicle charging such that the system minimum voltage is within the allowable limits. The inputs to the Fuzzy Charging Controller (FCC) include the States of Charge (SOC) of the electric vehicles, the grid parameters represented in the system minimum voltage, and the hourly energy price. The output of the FCC is the charging levels of the electric vehicles' batteries. The developed fuzzy logic-based charging strategy was validated on the 69-bus test system. The Fuzzy Charging (FC) was compared with three modes of uncoordinated charging, namely Slow Charging (SC), Medium Charging (MC), and Fast Charging (FC). The results of the comparative study prove the superiority of the developed fuzzy charging approach over uncoordinated charging schemes.

Community Opinion Maximization in Social Networks

Maximizing the influence of opinions is an emerging research topic in social networks. Although the community is a key structure of social networks, little effort has been made to investigate how to maximize the influence of opinions on all communities. This paper proposes a systematic approach to address this issue. First, we construct a multi-faceted opinion evolution (MFOE) model with three critical influence factors, namely, individuals, neighbors, and communities, to describe the opinion evolution process in social networks. The convergence analysis confirms its ability to reveal the influence of opinions. Then, we define the overall community opinion to measure the influence of opinions on all communities and employ it as the objective function to formulate an optimization problem called community opinion maximization (COM). We show that the COM problem is NP-hard. To optimize this problem, a memetic algorithm with three problem-specific schemes is developed and termed MACOM. Extensive experimental studies on real-world social networks demonstrate the plausibility of the MFOE model and the effectiveness of MACOM. IEEE

Searching for new rules and new knowledge in problem areas, where very little or almost none previous knowledge is present, can be a very long and demanding process. In our research we addressed the problem of finding new knowledge in the form of rules in the diabetes database using a combination of decision trees and association rules. The first question we wanted to answer was, if there are significant differences in sets of rules both approaches produce, and how rules, produced by decision trees behave, after being a subject of filtering and reduction, normally used in association rule approaches. In order to accomplish that, we had to make some modifications to both the decision tree approach and association rule approach. From the first results we can conclude, that the sets of rules, built by decision trees are much smaller than the sets created by association rules. We could also establish, that filtering and reduction did not effect the rules derived from decision trees in the same scale as association rules.

In this study, we consider how the choice of DNA circuit elements influences the robustness of DNA feedback regulator, where there are two possible candidates for the amplifier as a gain element in the feedback circuit. We propose that the amplifier that is designed with irreversible reactions in a part of reaction scheme is more robust than the other that are designed with only reversible reactions against the harmful leak reaction between fuel strands.

Automatic recognition of individuals is a significant problem in the development of pattern recognition. In this paper, we introduce a simple technique for personal identification of human faces in cluttered scenes based on neural nets. In the detection phase, neural nets are used to test whether a window of 20/spl times/20 pixels contains a face or not. A major difficulty in the learning process comes from the large database required for face/nonface images. We solve this problem by dividing the data into two groups. Such division results in reduction of computational complexity, thus decreasing the time and memory needed during the image test. For the recognition phase, feature measurements are made through Fourier descriptors. Such features are modified to reduce the number of neurons in the hidden layer. Simulation results for the proposed algorithm show good performance compared with previous results.

In this paper, we investigate and evaluate the performance of the extended Born approximation in a high frequency band, up to 18 GHz. We reformulate the EBA in terms of the dielectric constant. The scattered electric fields using the EBA are compared with the exact model. We demonstrate a guideline for choosing the grid size and discuss the dependence of the accuracy of EBA on size and permittivity of the anomaly. In addition, the EBA model is applied to the two anomalies case. In our work, the dielectric perturbation instead of conductivity perturbation is emphasized.

In this study, the power scheduling problem in μ-grids is investigated taking the uncertainties in power demand and wind power into account. The problem is formulated as a stochastic mixed-integer linear optimization problem with the objective being minimizing the total μ-grid cost. The objective is subject to a set of operational constraints imposed on the generating units and the system itself. A two-stage stochastic programming method has been applied to find the optimal power generation schedule for a μ-grid. The developed approach was implemented in a General Algebraic Modeling system platform (GAMS). The developed method was tested on a μ-grid consisting of eight dispatchable units and a wind turbine. To demonstrate the necessity of uncertainty modeling, the value of the stochastic solution (VSS) and the expected value of perfect information (EVPI) were used to compare the stochastic power schedule obtained with the deterministic one.

Smith predictor is a well-known method for compensating time delay in control systems. Therefore, it has been applied to many systems with time delay so far. However, delay time should be estimated precisely in this method. So, if time delay is fluctuant and unpredictable, like the communication delay over the Internet, performance of Smith predictor deteriorates. This paper proposes "Communication Disturbance Observer". It regards the error caused by time delay as disturbance torque (or acceleration), then it can observe and compensate the error. Furthermore, it doesn't need to estimate the value of delay time; therefore it can be applied to control systems with fluctuant and unpredictable time delay. It can be said that control system with "Communication Disturbance Observer" is robust to time delay and fluctuation of that. Effectiveness and robustness of proposed method is shown by result of simulation and experiment. In experiment, master-slave manipulator was used over the Internet. We were able to get the sense of touch from the environment of remote site.
