A system consisting of n components connected in a circular manner is called a circular consecutive-κ-out-of-n: F system if it fails when κ or more consecutive components fail. One of the most important problems for this kind of systems is to obtain the optimal component arrangement that maximizes the system reliability. As the number of components n increases, the amount of calculations would be too much to obtain an optimal solution for this problem. In this paper, we propose eight types of simulated annealing algorithms, aiming efficient search. We compare their performances and investigate efficiencies of three ideas applied to such algorithms, through numerical experiments. © ICAQM 2012.

A novel four-band CPW-fed antenna simultaneously satisfied the requirement for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag and WiMAX /WLAN applications is reported in this paper. Limited to 30×30 mm2 area on a PCBoard with Ε r=4.4, the antenna has four U-shaped, two F-shaped and eight L-shaped slots as additional resonators to achieve multi-band operation. Intelligent Single Particle Optimization (ISPO) algorithm is used to determine the optimized slot configuration for the best return loss at 0.96 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.76 GHz and 5.8 GHz simultaneously. The performance of the designed antenna was validated through simulations using both the Finite Element Method and the Method of Moment. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

We had introduced video caching techniques in the Radio Access Network (RAN) in [1] as a way to reduce the need to bring requested videos from Internet CDNs, thus reducing overall backhaul traffic, improving video quality of experience and increasing network capacity to support more simultaneous video requests. In this paper, we investigate supplementing the resulting wireless cloud with a hierarchical caching scheme, where the gateways in the Core Network (CN) also have video caches. The hierarchical caching approach further improves network capacity by enabling multiple cell sites to share caches at higher levels of the hierarchy, thereby improving overall cache hit ratio, without increasing the total cache size used. In addition, we exploit hierarchical caching to better accommodate mobility, so that when a user with an active video session moves from one cell to a neighboring cell, it is likely that the video currently being downloaded is already in a cache within the RAN or CN network associated with the new cell. To achieve the goal of improving capacity and supporting mobility, we extend our User Preference Profile (UPP) based caching policies [1] to accommodate the hierarchical caching structure introduced in this paper. For all the videos that miss the cache in any layer of hierarchy, we propose a scheduling approach to allocate RAN and CN backhaul resources judiciously so as to maximize the capacity of the wireless network. We extend our discrete event statistical simulation framework developed in [1] to study the performance of the proposed hierarchical caching approach. Our simulation results show that using hierarchical caching can enhance cache hit ratio by 24% and network capacity by up to 45% compared to caching only in the RAN. Significant capacity gains are also observed when additionally considering user mobility.

A Type-2 Fuzzy logic controller adapted with quantum genetic algorithm, referred to as type-2 quantum fuzzy logic controller (T2QFLC), is presented in this article for robot manipulators with unstructured dynamical uncertainties. Quantum genetic algorithm is employed to tune type-2 fuzzy sets and rule sets simultaneously for effective design of interval type-2 FLCs. Traditional fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs), often termed as type-1 FLCs using type-1 fuzzy sets, have difficulty in modeling and minimizing the effect of uncertainties present in many real time applications. Therefore, manually designed type-2 FLCs have been utilized in many control process due to their ability to model uncertainty and it relies on heuristic knowledge of experienced operators. The type-2 FLC can be considered as a collection of different embedded type-1 FLCs. However, manually designing the rule set and interval type-2 fuzzy set for an interval type-2 FLC to give a good response is a difficult task. The purpose of our study is to make the design process automatic. The type-2 FLCs exhibit better performance for compensating the large amount of uncertainties with severe nonlinearities. Furthermore, the adaptive type-2 FLC is validated through a set of numerical experiments and compared with QGA evolved type-1 FLCs, traditional and neural type-1 FLCs.

In this paper, we introduce distributed caching of videos at the base-stations of the Radio Access Network (RAN) as a way to reduce the need to bring requested videos from Internet CDNs, thereby reducing backhaul transmission, improving video quality of experience - delay and video stalling - and increasing overall network capacity to support more number of simultaneous video requests. Unlike Internet CDNs that can store millions of videos in a relatively few large sized caches, our proposed caching architecture consists of a very large number of micro-caches, with each base-station micro-cache being able to store only 1000s of videos, and hence may not be able to have high cache hit ratio. To address this challenge, we propose two new caching policies based on the User Preference Profile (UPP) of users in a cell: R-UPP (Reactive UPP) and P-UPP (Proactive UPP). Further, for videos that result in cache misses and need to be fetched from Internet CDNs, we develop a video scheduling approach that allocates the RAN backhaul resources to the video requests so as to reduce video latency and increase network capacity. We develop a discrete event statistical simulation framework using MATLAB to study the performance of RAN caching. Our simulation results show that RAN micro-caches with the proposed UPP-based caching policies, together with the proposed scheduling approach, can improve the probability of video requests that can meet initial delay requirements by almost 60%, and the number of concurrent video requests that can be served by up to 100%. The results also show that UPP based policies can enhance network capacity by up to 30% compared to conventional caching policies.

This paper proposes a three-dimensional Gabor feature extraction for pixel-based hyperspectral imagery classification using a memetic algorithm. The proposed algorithm named MGFE combines 3-D Gabor wavelet feature generation and feature selection together to capture the signal variances of hyperspectral imagery, thereby extracting the discriminative 3-D Gabor features for accurate classification. MGFE is characterized with a novel fitness evaluation function based on independent feature relevance and a pruning local search for eliminating redundant features. The experimental results on two real-world hyperspectral imagery datasets show that MGFE succeeds in obtaining significantly improved classification accuracy with parsimonious feature selection. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A full-scale 3D simulation study of the impact of metal gate granularity (MGG) on the off-state of a 25 nm length gate SOI FinFET is carried out. The 3D simulations are performed using a parallel finite-element simulator within the drift-diffusion approximation using density gradient quantum corrections. The shapes in the device are described by using splines, and metal grains are modelled using Voronoi diagrams. We study two different grain sizes and silicon fin corner geometries. While the impact of the geometry is found to be negligible in our simulations due to a relatively large size of the device, the grain size has a large impact on the variability of subthreshold characteristics. © 2012 IEEE.

Statistical discovery of site inter-dependencies in sub-molecular hierarchical protein structuring

Background: Much progress has been made in understanding the 3D structure of proteins using methods such as NMR and X-ray crystallography. The resulting 3D structures are extremely informative, but do not always reveal which sites and residues within the structure are of special importance. Recently, there are indications that multiple-residue, sub-domain structural relationships within the larger 3D consensus structure of a protein can be inferred from the analysis of the multiple sequence alignment data of a protein family. These intra-dependent clusters of associated sites are used to indicate hierarchical inter-residue relationships within the 3D structure. To reveal the patterns of associations among individual amino acids or sub-domain components within the structure, we apply a k-modes attribute (aligned site) clustering algorithm to the ubiquitin and transthyretin families in order to discover associations among groups of sites within the multiple sequence alignment. We then observe what these associations imply within the 3D structure of these two protein families. Results: The k-modes site clustering algorithm we developed maximizes the intra-group interdependencies based on a normalized mutual information measure. The clusters formed correspond to sub-structural components or binding and interface locations. Applying this data-directed method to the ubiquitin and transthyretin protein family multiple sequence alignments as a test bed, we located numerous interesting associations of interdependent sites. These clusters were then arranged into cluster tree diagrams which revealed four structural sub-domains within the single domain structure of ubiquitin and a single large sub-domain within transthyretin associated with the interface among transthyretin monomers. Soft errors are a serious concern in state holder circuits at they can cause temporarily malfunctions. C-elements are one of the state holders that are widely used in asynchronous circuits. In this paper, our investigations focus on the vulnerability of different latch types based on C-elements with respect to soft errors. Our aim is to design single event upset (SEU) tolerant latch that has the capability of both detecting and correcting soft errors based on converting single rail to dual-rail configuration and Razor flip flop implementation. In the event of an SEU hitting sensitive nodes and causing the state to temporarily change, an error is generated and a shadow latch restores the correct data. We have demonstrated the functionality of our proposed latch by simulating the design using UMC90nm technology. We also measured error rate of our proposed latch by using an Altera Cyclone II FPGA board. We have obtained the voltage dependence of the error rates. The results show that our proposed latch has less than 1.5% faults propagated at the output.

As computer graphics continue to progress, there is an increasingly large number of 3D models available on the internet. However, most of these models are static, with a rigid shape and fixed pose. Only a few models can be animated with restricted motion, which is generally produced by professional animators, or by using expensive motion capture equipment. Novice users generally have great difficulty trying to animate an arbitrarily static model without any motion data. In this paper, we propose an integrated animation system which aims to animate bipedal or quadrupedal 3D models. To achieve this, we began by developing a video-based motion database with several animal groups of biological classification. Each group consists of close genera and families which have similar features. In addition, for each group, there is an articulated standard skeleton with pre-designed cyclic motion patterns. Through a hierarchical graphical interface, users can select different motion pattern candidates from a biologically classified tree structure. The selected motion pattern is then applied to this model to automatically synthesize realistic bipedal or quadrupedal motion.
