This paper discusses the human preference learning by robot partners through interaction with a person and human position based on sensor network. We use a robot music player; Miuro, and we focus on the music selection for providing the comfortable sound field for the person. We propose a learning method of the relationship between human position and its corresponding music selection based on Q-learning. Furthermore, we propose a steady-state genetic algorithm using template matching to extract a person in 3D distance image based on differential extraction. The experimental results show that the proposed method can learn the relationship between human position and its corresponding human preferable music.

Impact of the quality of spatial 3D city models on sensor networks placement optimization

Sensor networks are increasingly used for tracking, monitoring, and observing spatial dynamic phenomena in the real world (e.g. urban area). In order to ensure an efficient deployment of a sensor network, several optimization algorithms have been proposed in recent years. Most of these algorithms often rely on oversimplified sensor models. In addition, they do not consider information on the terrain topography, city models, and the presence of diverse obstacles in the sensing area (e.g. buildings, trees, poles). Only some of those optimization algorithms attempt to consider the terrain information in the optimization of a sensor network deployment. However, most of these algorithms consider that the spatial models used for this purpose are perfect representations of the reality and are not sensitive to the quality of the information. However, spatial models are simplified representations of a complex reality, and hence are inherently uncertain. In this paper we will investigate the impact of the spatial data quality on the optimization of a sensor network and its spatial coverage in an urban area. For this purpose, we will investigate specific implications of spatial data quality criteria for a 3D city model that will be used in sensor network optimization algorithms. Then, we will analyze the impact of some of those criteria on the estimation of sensor network coverage.!Afterwards, a case study for sensor network deployment in an urban area will be presented. This case study will demonstrate the impact of 3D city models quality on the estimation of coverage using global and local optimization algorithms. Finally, the results obtained from this experimentation will be presented and discussed.

This paper proposes a memory binary particle swarm optimization algorithm (MBPSO) based on a new updating strategy. Unlike the traditional binary PSO, which updates the binary bits of a particle ignoring their previous status, MBPSO memorizes the bit status and updates them according to a new defined velocity. As such, precious historical information could be retained to guide the search. The velocity vector of MBPSO is designed as a probability for deciding whether the particle bits change or not. The proposed algorithm is tested on four discrete benchmark functions. The experimental results reported over 100 runs show that MBPSO is capable of obtaining encouraging performance in discrete optimization problems.

Progression to cell death correlates with neurite swelling induced by stretch injury

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a major component of traumatic brain injury, is associated with rapid deformation of brain tissue resulting in the stretching of neural axons. Focal axonal swelling, which is the morphological hallmarks of DAI pathology, leads to the disconnection of neurons from tissues, resulting in cell death. Our goal is better understanding of neuronal tolerance and help to predicting the pathogenesis of DAI from mechanical loading to the head. In present study, we developed an in vitro stretch injury device that subjected cultured cells to a wide range of mechanical stretch that are experienced during in vivo head injury. Then using this device, PC12 cells, which extend structurally axon-like cylindrical protrusions in culture, were stretched to a strain of 0.15, 0.30, or 1.00 at strain rates of 30, 40, or 80 s-1, or left as static culture. Following mechanical loading, we assessed neurite swelling resulting in neuronal detachment from culture substrate and neuronal death. As a result, the increase in early neurite swelling was dependent on the severity of the stretch, and neuronal adhesion and viability at 24 h post-injury decrease in a stretch-dependent manner. These results suggest that the formation of neurite swellings correlates with the progression to neuronal death. © 2012 by JSME.

Portfolio replication problem is to optimize the portfolio such that its proportion-weighted combination is the same as the given benchmark portfolio. However, the benchmark portfolio generally opens only the return to the public but other information such as the assets included in the portfolio, the proportion-weighted combination, the rebalancing date and the investment strategies is closed to the public. In order to optimize such portfolios, we propose an optimization method based on the probabilistic model-building GA in this paper. On the other hand, we are focusing on the long-short portfolio optimization. The long-short portfolio consists of the assets with long positions in which they have bought and been held and with short positions in which they have been borrowed and sold. While applying any optimization method to the long-short portfolios, the portfolio as a feasible solution must be satisfied an equality constraint. In order to make the feasible solutions effectively, we propose two techniques and then apply them to our optimization method. In the numerical experiments, we show that our method has better ability to replicate the long-short portfolios with good fitness values. We found that, however, some portfolios were not replicated though our method worked well. We also discuss this problem in this paper.

This paper considers nonlinear dynamical networks consisting of individually iISS (integral input-to-state stable) subsystems which are not necessarily ISS (input-to-state stable). Stability criteria for internal and external stability of the networks are developed in view of both necessity and sufficiency. For the sufficiency, we show how we can construct a Lyapunov function of the network explicitly under the assumption that a cyclic small-gain condition is satisfied. The cyclic small-gain condition is shown to be equivalent to a matrix-like condition. The two conditions and their equivalence precisely generalize some central ISS results in the literature. Moreover, the necessity of the matrix-like condition is established. The allowable number of non-ISS subsystems for stability of the network is discussed through several necessity conditions.

In this work, new approach of missing step detection without using costly encoder in a micro stepping motor is proposed. For a steeping motor driver, a MOSFET driven H-bridge driver was adopted, and sinusoidal type of current is controlled to implement the micro stepping. Also, in order to investigate the missing step the current flowing the coil which is generated from the operational amplifier was given feedback and the feedback data was analyzed to detect the missing step. As a sequence, the missing step was compensated as much as the amount of the missing steps, yielding the control of the desired micro stepping angle.

This paper puts forward an efficient and optimized method to determine the probable-colluders in a MD5 based cryptosystem. Along with the conventional MD5 implementing architecture, our scheme employs a predictor control block which takes the message stream from the user, and provides the log-list of the equal length bit-streams that are most likely to produce collisions with the message stream in a real time system. The predictor controller uses Time varying Acceleration Coefficient Particle Swarm optimization (TVAC-PSO) algorithm. Besides proposing the algorithm itself the paper also surveys the performance of the predictor when employed with different hardware platforms.

In recent years there is a rapid increase of traffic to a given web server within a short time as the number of Internet users increases, and such a phenomenon is called a flash crowd. Once flash crowds occur in the web server, a response rate decreases or the web server may crash as the load increases. We propose a load reduction system, which prevents excessive accesses and stably delivers content without enhancing the performance of the web server even when flash crowds occur. In the proposed system, a proxy server detects flash crowds by monitoring the number of requests and changes a content delivery system. To limit accesses to the web server, the proxy server redirects a request to another client that holds the content in the cache when flash crowds occur. We also propose a content delivery system that uses a tree construction to reduce the client load. Moreover, its efficacy is shown through simulations.

Recent low-power design utilizes a variety of approaches for Vdd and Vt control to reduce dynamic and leakage power. It is important to be able to explore various low-power design options at a high-level early in the design process. Furthermore, process variation is becoming large and greatly affects the power and delay results. In particular, the delay analysis becomes very complicated and time-consuming with existing tools. This paper proposes a new efficient RTL delay macro-model to address these recent problems. The goal is to provide transistor-level accuracy at the RTL level with Vt and Vdd variability. It also includes the ability to handle PVT variations. The validation of the model is demonstrated by comparison with a circuit simulator and a timing verification tool. The experiments show this macro-model predicts the delay for variable Vdd and Vt with an accuracy of ±5% against HSPICE and ±10% against PrimeTime for a number of ITC'99 benchmark circuits. © 2011 IEEE.
