The portfolio optimization/rebalancing problem is to determine a proportion-weighted combination in a portfolio in order to achieve certain investment targets. For this problem, many researchers have used various evolutionary methods and models such as genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. On the other hand, the portfolio optimization/rebalancing problem can be viewed as a multi-dimensional problem because its solution is a proportion-weighted combination for the given assets. The previous works, however, have not taken into account the multi-dimensional aspect of the problem. In order to approach this problem from the multi-dimensional aspect, we propose a model based on the probabilistic model-building genetic algorithm with narrower width histograms (PMBGA-NWH), and then apply it to optimize the constrained index funds with the given rebalancing cost in this paper. In the numerical experiments, we show that our model has better ability to make optimal index funds than the traditional genetic algorithm (GA).

At-speed scan testing for intra-clock and inter-clock transition delay faults in a SOC design with multiple clock domains is an important and challenging issue. Current practice in industry usually applies a test scheme targeted on intra-clock transition fault delay testing (i.e., intra testing). In this paper a test scheme targeting both intra-clock and inter-clock domains for transition delay fault testing (i.e., intra-inter testing) is applied. This paper presents an empirical study by comparing between intra testing and intra-inter testing in terms of fault classification, test detection, test coverage, test volume, and test power by using industrial circuits. The information provided by this paper is beneficial to both practitioners and researchers in their pursuit of improving the quality of transition delay testing, which is critical to the quality of deep-sub micron VLSI chips.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake engineering Research Center (E-Defense) of National Research Institute of Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan, which facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel finite element (FE) analysis software package called ADVENTYRECluster (ADVC) as a platform. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame that is the specimen of the full-scale total collapse shaking-table test conducted in September 2007 at E-Defense. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

We present the results of a data mining research on the use of GPS positions and speed of travel of vehicles in urban areas to determine optimal travel routes for emergency vehicles. A new approach using predictive programming is presented. The approach focuses on using data mining of existing data as the key factor in the application logic where various decisions are to be made. The main appeal of such an approach is that the application logic evolves over time according to the application data. As the data changes the decisions soon follow. This gives the impression of intelligent behavior of the application. Copy;2009 IEEE.

User performance with a tabletop display was tested using touch-based and mouse-based interaction in a traditional pointing task. Dependent variables were throughput, error rate, and movement time. In a study with 12 participants, touch had a higher throughput with average of 5.53 bps compared to 3.83 bps for the mouse. Touch also had a lower movement time on average, with block means ranging from 403 ms to 1051 ms vs. 607 ms to 1323 ms with the mouse. Error rates were lower for the mouse at 2.1%, compared to 9.8% for touch. The high error rates using touch were attributed to problems in selecting small targets with the finger. It is argued that, overall, touch input is a preferred and efficient input technique for tabletop displays, but that more research is needed to improve touch selection of small targets.
