The body area sensor network is widely regarded as a key technology that holds promise of enabling low-cost healthcare to be accessible to the fast growing aging sector of the population. The popularity of smartphones with their open operating systems provides a powerful platform for developing very low-cost personalized healthcare applications. In addition to the requirement of low cost, the limited battery life and the implementation of bio-signal processing software in resource-constrained smartphone platforms are two practical challenges. In this work, we present the design and implementation considerations of such a smartphone-centered platform for low-cost continuous health monitoring based on commercial-off-the-shelf wireless wearable biosensors, which are anticipated to proliferate in the market in the near future. As a case study, this platform approach has been implemented utilizing photoplethysmographic biosensors and different smartphones to measure heart rate, breathing rate, oxygen saturation, and estimate obstructive sleep apnea. The two aforementioned practical challenges have been addressed in detail from a systemlevel design perspective. The case study result confirms the many advantages of the suggested system, including the closed loop control capability, portability and upgradability.

This paper deals with the mixed H ∞ /D-stability control problem with a fixed-order output feedback controller. It is well known that this control problem is described as a combined bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) problem whose feasible solution is difficult to be found. In this paper, we propose a new exterior-point approach for finding a feasible solution of this problem. The advantage of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point. Numerical examples show the efficiency of our approach.

This paper is concerned with a D-stability controller design problem with a static or a reduced-order output feedback controller. This problem is difficult to be solved theoretically, because it consists of some bilinear matrix inequality's (BMI's). In this paper, an exterior-point approach to this problem, which produces a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from an infeasible one is proposed. The feature of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point of the sequence. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our approach.

Due to the influence of the local noise at the distribution level, the frequency curve obtained from the frequency disturbance recorder (FDR) unit is too non-stationary to observe its wave-front directly, which causes some problems in the event location estimation method. In this paper, a morphological filter (MF) is employed to extract the wave-front arrival time and the trend of the frequency curve. With the help of the MF, the accuracy of the event location method is greatly improved.

As the market size of mobile products is enlarged, low power and high density design in integrated chips are demanding. To meet these market demands, "ultra high density" (UHD) standard cell library becomes essential to further reduce the chip size. Furthermore, to enhance the density of standard cell library especially at 90nm and below, the conventional methods of reducing cell height is not sufficient to meet the density constraints. Motivated by the fact, in this paper, we devise a flexible design technique of UHD library with the multi-height cell structure. Each cell of conventional standard cell libraries with one-layer metal routing has the same cell height. However, multi-height cell library with two-layer metal routing has two types of cell structure: 1) Simple cells (e.g. inverter, nand, nor, etc.) are structured with single height;2) Complex cells (e.g. flip-flop, latch, mux, etc.) are structured with double height. In this double height cell structure, Metal2 layer is used for power line. Therefore, Metall and G-ploy are routed vertically, gaining more Metall routing space, and thus we can attain more effective design for manufacturability (DFM). Also, by doing so, design time is reduced while achieving better layout efficiency. We tested logic circuits with 700,000 gates using 90nm technology to compare our new UHD library with existing high density library. Our experimental results show that each of 26 cells (frequently used) is shrunk by 14.29 ∼ 26.98%. Furthermore, chip size is shrunk by 13.90 ∼ 15.65% compared with high density library. © 2008 SPIE.

In this paper, we present a timing synchronization scheme of the next generation IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard which is based on MIMO-OFDM technique. The proposed timing synchronization method takes two steps which consist of two modified auto-correlators. For coarse timing synchronization, a sliding window differentiator is used after a conventional auto-correlation in order to avoid plateau problem. The conjugate symmetry property of L-LTS is used for fine timing synchronization. Since cross-correlation based methods are not required, the computational complexity and the number of multiplier can be reduced. In order to reduce the hardware complexity, we have used sign comparators (SC) instead of using multipliers. Based on simulation results, the proposed method outperforms a conventional method. The proposed scheme can be applied to IEEE 802.11n systems and can easily be expanded to frequency synchronization scheme. ©2008 IEEE.

This paper reports on a project to improve students' ability to write better lab reports and assist teaching assistants (TAs) in grading reports in a consistent manner. A lab report teaching system was developed that includes lab report templates, teaching assistant instructions, grading rubrics, examples, peer review materials and instructions, and recommendations for quickly providing student feedback (grading). These materials were developed for project-based labs across the electrical engineering curriculum and utilize methods to write weekly lab updates that are combined into a final lab report, mimicking methods commonly used in industry. The technical writing information was adapted to all levels of complexity to help students from freshman through senior years. The system begins with instruction on writing very basic reports, and builds each year on previous knowledge and practices, to prepare students to later write complex reports. This system is designed to improve students' understanding of labs (by 'writing to learn') in addition to preparing them for the communication intensive workplace. The amount of time spent grading such reports is often a primary concern, as this is commonly given as a reason for not requiring advanced writing assignments in engineering classes. Detailed guidelines and grading rubrics are included in this manual to instruct TAs on better and more consistent grading techniques. Guidelines for checking both lab books and formal lab reports help improve TA training and grading consistency, reducing student complaints. Although this system was designed for an electrical engineering program, it can also be adapted to other technical fields and used for various scientific lab reports. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

In this paper, a novel time-of-arrival estimation algorithm is proposed for impulse radio-based UWB systems in dense multipath environment. In particular, a dedicated ranging sequence with good cross-correlation property is proposed and a threshold-based search-back unit is introduced, with the purpose of supporting high-precision ranging even at low signal-to-noise ratio. An approximate closed-form expression on the optimal threshold is derived based on the Rayleigh statistical analysis, and its accuracy and tightness are verified by simulations. Results show that the proposed ranging scheme achieves an excellent mean absolute error performance in the order of nanoseconds without introducing too much latency. © 2008 IEEE.
