Decision support systems that help physicians are becoming very important part of medical decision making. They are based on different models and the best of them are providing an explanation together with an accurate, reliable and quick response. One of the most viable among decision-making models is the concept of decision trees, already successfully used for many medical decision making purposes. Although effective and reliable, the traditional decision tree construction approach still contains several deficiencies. Therefore we decided to develop and compare several decision supporting models, each of them built with different discretization of attributes and decision classes. For the construction of decision trees we used MtDeciT, in our laboratory developed tool for building decision trees using the classical induction method. All solutions were evolved for determining the influence of basic properties of child and his/her parents to length of successful breastfeeding. A comparison between developed models and obtained results has shown that the way of discretization obviously plays a great role in the reliable and accurate real-world medical decision making.

Recent development on distributed systems has shown that a variety of fairness constraints (some of which are only recently defined) play vital roles in designing self- stabilizing population protocols. Existing model checkers are deficient in verifying the systems as only limited kinds of fair- ness are supported with limited verification efficiency. In this work, we support model checking of distributed systems in the toolkit PAT (process analysis toolkit), with a variety of fairness constraints (e.g., process-level weak/strong fairness, event-level weak/strong fairness, strong global fairness). It performs on-the-fly verification against linear temporal prop- erties. We show through empirical evaluation (on recent pop- ulation protocols as well as benchmark systems) that PAT has advantage in model checking with fairness. Previously un- known bugs have been revealed against systems which are designed to function only with strong global fairness.

This paper presents an integrated power system for low-power wireless sensor networks with dynamic efficiency optimization technique. By adaptively resizing power transistors and adjusting switching frequency, system efficiency is enhanced significantly. Theoretical analysis is elaborated to support the proposed technique. A prototype integrated power system for self-powered photovoltaic wireless sensing node was designed and simulated with TSMC 0.35μm CMOS process. With a power range of 0.5μW to 10mW, power efficiency stays above 71%. Tolerance between theoretical and simulated optimal power transistor sizes is less than 6.7%, while that of optimal switching frequencies is less than 5%. The paper gives another solution to minimizing system power in the perspective of power processing. Copyright 2005 ACM.
