In urban areas of Japan, such as Tokyo, overcrowding in condominiums and office buildings leaves limited flat land for installing solar panels, resulting in inadequate installation of renewable energy. To advance photovoltaic power generation and support Japan's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, we are exploring the use of cylindrical solar cells in these dense urban settings. Cylindrical solar cells are ideal for metropolitan installations due to their lightweight design and wind resistance. However, it is crucial to consider how installation configurations influence electricity production, especially the need to minimize shadowing from nearby buildings and other urban elements. This study utilized lighting simulation software to model the light flux based on actual installation conditions of cylindrical solar cells to identify optimal placement strategies. Additionally, this configuration was compared with traditional flat-plate solar cells under similar conditions. Findings indicate that cylindrical solar cells offer flexible installation options. Notably, employing a horizontal grid layout for cylindrical cells addresses the challenges associated with wall-mounted flat-plate cells, which suffer reduced luminous flux at higher solar altitudes. These results demonstrate that cylindrical solar cells can effectively overcome the challenges of photovoltaic installation in densely populated urban areas. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents an American sign language (ASL) semantic communications scheme. The scheme consists of a semantic encoder that leverages a convolutional neural network to effectively utilize the ASL alphabet. The encoded information is transmitted with the 24-QAM quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Additionally, this paper introduces a dataset that involves the overlaying of red-green-blue landmarks and key-points onto the acquired images, thereby augmenting the depiction of hand posture. The quantification of the proposed system's training, testing, and communication performance is accomplished through numerical results, which serve to emphasize the attainable benefits and stimulate meaningful discussions. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep-time Earth research plays a pivotal role in deciphering the rates, patterns, and mechanisms of Earth's evolutionary processes throughout geological history, providing essential scientific foundations for climate prediction, natural resource exploration, and sustainable planetary stewardship. To advance Deep-time Earth research in the era of big data and artificial intelligence, the International Union of Geological Sciences initiated the “Deeptime Digital Earth International Big Science Program”(DDE) in 2019. At the core of this ambitious program lies the development of geoscience knowledge graphs, serving as a transformative knowledge infrastructure that enables the integration, sharing, mining, and analysis of heterogeneous geoscience big data. The DDE knowledge graph initiative has made significant strides in three critical dimensions:(1) establishing a unified knowledge structure across geoscience disciplines that ensures consistent representation of geological entities and their interrelationships through standardized ontologies and semantic frameworks;(2) developing a robust and scalable software infrastructure capable of supporting both expert-driven and machine-assisted knowledge engineering for large-scale graph construction and management;(3) implementing a comprehensive three-tiered architecture encompassing basic, discipline-specific, and application-oriented knowledge graphs, spanning approximately 20 geoscience disciplines. Through its open knowledge framework and international collaborative network, this initiative has fostered multinational research collaborations, establishing a robust foundation for next-generation geoscience research while propelling the discipline toward FAIR(Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices in deep-time Earth systems research.

In the latest open radio access network (O-RAN) architecture, the Y1 interface has been introduced to grant authorized parties, known as Y1 consumers, access to and utilization of Y1 data within the near-real-time RAN intelligent controller (Near-RT RIC). The primary objective of enabling communication between Y1 consumers and the Near-RT RIC is to facilitate the introduction of value-added services to O-RAN. This paper comprehensively explores Y1 communications, services, interface, data, and other essential concepts required to understand the subject matter thoroughly. We examine the security and privacy aspects of Y1 communications to ensure that all authorized parties involved in these interactions are equipped to withstand potential threats and vulnerabilities. More importantly, our research proposes a novel architectural framework for Y1 communications that integrates advanced functionalities and specifies secure communication protocols. This framework addresses the limitations of the state-of-the-art Y1 architecture by enhancing its robustness, adaptability, and efficiency. In addition, we outline the procedural flow for Y1 communications within the proposed framework, detailing the functionalities and processes it introduces. Beyond security and privacy procedures, this paper elaborates on the various phases of Y1 communications. Furthermore, a series of experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed Y1 framework. Our assessment focuses on the authentication and authorization schemes, revealing that the mutual transport layer security (mTLS) 1.3-based certificate-bound access token (CBAT) scheme demonstrated superior performance in ensuring secure and efficient communication. Additionally, the robustness of the proposed architecture is validated by evaluating its functionality in both subscription and query scenarios. In this paper, the problem of joint user scheduling and computing resource allocation in asynchronous mobile edge computing (MEC) networks is studied. In such networks, edge devices will offload their computational tasks to an MEC server, using the energy they harvest from this server. To get their tasks processed on time using the harvested energy, edge devices will strategically schedule their task offloading, and compete for the computational resource at the MEC server. Then, the MEC server will execute these tasks asynchronously based on the arrival of the tasks. This joint user scheduling, time and computation resource allocation problem is posed as an optimization framework whose goal is to find the optimal scheduling and allocation strategy that minimizes the energy consumption of these mobile computing tasks. To solve this mixed-integer non-linear programming problem, the general benders decomposition method is adopted which decomposes the original problem into a primal problem and a master problem. Specifically, the primal problem is related to computation resource and time slot allocation, of which the optimal closed-form solution is obtained. The master problem regarding discrete user scheduling variables is constructed by adding optimality cuts or feasibility cuts according to whether the primal problem is feasible, which is a standard mixed-integer linear programming problem and can be efficiently solved. By iteratively solving the primal problem and master problem, the optimal scheduling and resource allocation scheme is obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed asynchronous computing framework reduces 87.17% energy consumption compared with conventional synchronous computing counterpart. The main goal of eNeuron H2020 project (Nov 2020-Oct. 2024, ID: 957779) is to develop innovative tools for the optimal design and operation of local energy communities, integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers at different scales. This paper presents a review study of the enabling conditions for the deployment of integrated local energy communities (ILECs) in Europe, performed within the project. The enabling conditions are addressed by defining the key actors and their interests in the implementation of an energy community at local level and through a detailed mapping of the enabling and emerging energy and information and communication technologies at both household and community levels. Special focus is also on mapping of the demand-side flexibility technologies to understand the benefits of local flexibility and impacts on the larger systems. In such analysis, the key issues for implementation and adaptation of this new energy paradigm are investigated through covering technological, socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects. © 2023, CC BY.

In this paper, a pervasive wireless channel modeling theory is first proposed, which uses a unified channel modeling method and a unified equation of channel impulse response (CIR), and can integrate important channel characteristics at different frequency bands and scenarios. Then, we apply the proposed theory to a three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency (STF) non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. The proposed 6G pervasive channel model (6GPCM) can characterize statistical properties of channels at all frequency bands from sub-6 GHz to visible light communication (VLC) bands and all scenarios such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), maritime, (ultra-)massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and industry Internet of things (IIoT) scenarios. By adjusting channel model parameters, the 6GPCM can be reduced to various simplified channel models for specific frequency bands and scenarios. Also, it includes standard fifth generation (5G) channel models as special cases. In addition, key statistical properties of the proposed 6GPCM are derived, simulated, and verified by various channel measurement results, which clearly demonstrates its accuracy, pervasiveness, and applicability. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.
