Detecting pain is critical for developing adaptive systems in clinical and assistive settings, allowing for timely interventions. This work presents an approach to detect the presence of physical pain during the performance of cognitive tasks from cortical signals. Cortical signals from the motor and prefrontal cortices are acquired using functional near in-frared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during two cognitive tasks, per-formed in the absence and presence of physical pain. Visibil-ity graphs (VGs) of these signals are constructed, and graph metrics of averaged clustering coefficient $(C)$ and edge den-sity $(D)$ are extracted. Statistical analysis reveals differences in these metrics for graphs corresponding to tasks performed under no-pain (NP) versus with-pain (WP) conditions, partic-ularly for signals obtained from the motor cortex. The graph metrics were then used as features to a support vector machine (SVM), achieving an accuracy exceeding 80% in distinguishing between tasks performed with and without pain. Our findings suggest that metrics from VGs of cortical sig-nals may serve as potential biomarkers for pain during cog-nitive tasks. This approach could be especially beneficial for non-verbal patients using assistive brain-computer interfaces.

Hypergraph Pattern Mining (HPM) aims to identify all the instances of user-interested subhypergraphs (patterns) in hypergraphs, which has been widely used in various applications. However, existing solutions either need significant enumeration overhead because they extend subhypergraphs at the granularity of vertices, or suffer from massive redundant computations because they often need to repeatedly fetch and process the same incident hyperedges for different vertices. This paper presents an overlap-centric system named OHMiner to efficiently support HPM. OHMiner proposes an overlap-centric execution model to determine the subhypergraphs isomorphism through computing and comparing overlaps among hyperedges using set operations. This model aims to efficiently handle the vertices that collectively share the same incident hyperedges. To automatically and precisely retrieve an arbitrary pattern’s overlapping semantics without performing redundant set computations, OHMiner further proposes a redundancy-free compiler, which constructs an Overlap Intersection Graph (OIG) for the pattern, optimizes the OIG, and generates an overlap-centric execution plan to guide the procedure of HPM. Moreover, OHMiner designs an overlap-centric parallel execution engine, which adopts an incremental overlap-pruned approach to fast validate candidates for HPM. Additionally, it proposes a degree-aware data store to support efficient generation of candidates. Through evaluating OHMiner on a broad range of real-world hypergraphs with various patterns, our experimental results show that OHMiner outperforms the state-of-the-art HPM system by 5.4×-22.2×. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The equipment digital twins (EDTs) for discrete manufacturing should be calibrated quickly to avoid irreversible physical damage to the equipment caused by biased control commands. Therefore, an online credibility assessment method for EDTs is urgently needed. However, existing assessment approaches consume too much time, and thus could not reveal dynamic faults in time. In this paper, the dynamic relationship between online evolution and actual applications of EDTs is investigated. Then, two steps are proposed to accelerate the assessment process significantly. One involves pre-constructing a performance-deviation-agent (PDA), and the other involves dynamically fitting the application-time-window (ATW) probability distribution. The methodology is applicable to discrete manufacturing processes. The dynamic credibility of EDT evolution process can be updated after every iteration of the model evolution. Sorting manufacturing equipment was used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. The time consumption was reduced by 90% compared with traditional assessment methods in the case. © 2025 IEEE.

The proposed system for recognizing Myanmar sign language between individuals who are deaf. The aim of this study is to develop deep learning models for the purpose of accurately identifying dynamic hand gesture images depicting 14 classes of Myanmar words and numbers. The present system utilizes a new dataset comprising 7834 images for 14 classes obtained through Webcam. The objective of this study is to enhance the robustness of the new model. Next, we proceed to evaluate the proposed model by comparing them to those of existing convolutional neural network models. These models are generally recognized as effective deep-learning approaches for recognition tasks. The proposed model exhibits a performance level of 96% for both validation and testing accuracies. Furthermore, the experimental finding demonstrates that the model, convolutional layers, achieved an accuracy of 100% in recognizing Myanmar Sign Language (MSL). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Stochastic Trajectory Optimization for Robotic Skill Acquisition From a Suboptimal Demonstration

Learning from Demonstration (LfD) has emerged as a crucial method for robots to acquire new skills. However, when given suboptimal task trajectory demonstrations with shape characteristics reflecting human preferences but subpar dynamic attributes such as slow motion, robots not only need to mimic the behaviors but also optimize the dynamic performance. In this work, we leverage optimization-based methods to search for a superior-performing trajectory whose shape is similar to that of the demonstrated trajectory. Specifically, we use Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to quantify the difference between two trajectories and combine it with additional performance metrics, such as collision cost, to construct the cost function. Moreover, we develop a multi-policy version of the Stochastic Trajectory Optimization for Motion Planning (STOMP), called MSTOMP, which is more stable and robust to parameter changes. To deal with the jitter in the demonstrated trajectory, we further utilize the gain-controlling method in the frequency domain to denoise the demonstration and propose a computationally more efficient metric, called Mean Square Error in the Spectrum (MSES), that measures the trajectories' differences in the frequency domain. We also theoretically highlight the connections between the time domain and the frequency domain methods. Finally, we verify our method in both simulation experiments and real-world experiments, showcasing its improved optimization performance and stability compared to existing methods. © 2016 IEEE.

Accurate identification of late mechanical activation (LMA) regions is crucial for optimal cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) lead implantation. However, existing approaches using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging often over-look myocardial scar information, which may be mistakenly identified as delayed activation regions. To address this issue, we propose a scar-aware LMA detection network that simultaneously detects myocardial scar and prevents LMA localization in these scarred regions. More specifically, our model integrates a pre-trained scar segmentation network using late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) CMRs into a LMA detection network based on highly accurate strain derived from displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE) CMRs. We introduce a novel scar-aware loss function that utilizes the segmented scar information to discourage false-positive detections of late activated areas. Our model can be trained with or without paired LGE data. During inference, our model does not require the input of LGE images, leveraging learned patterns from strain data alone to mitigate false-positive LMA detection in potential scar regions. We evaluate our model on subjects with and without myocardial scar, demonstrating significantly improved LMA detection accuracy in both scenarios. Our work paves the way for improved CRT planning, potentially leading to better patient outcomes.

The innovative investigation integrates digital and physical water networks to improve their management and predictive capabilities. The used approach applies advanced sensors for detecting leaks and smart meters that monitor water usage, send alerts, usage data and visual information to a digital platform. At the heart of this framework is a digital twin, a virtual replica that continuously reflects the real-time state of the physical network by processing incoming sensor data. A multimodal transformer model is employed to integrate and analyze diverse data streams, including numerical and visual inputs, enabling highly accurate leakage detection, future water usage forecasting, and contextual insights with a prediction accuracy of about 98%. This approach advances water management and provides valuable insights for preserving historical buildings that demonstrates optimize operational efficiency and ensure sustainable water use in smart water networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Distribution system state estimation (DSSE) is a critical enabler for distribution system operators (DSOs) to manage active distribution grids efficiently. Timely detection of state changes requires fast-executing state estimation techniques, yet the prevalent nonlinear weighted least squares approach, though effective, presents computational challenges. Linearizing inherent nonlinearities is a way to expedite DSSE solutions. This paper proposes a linear DSSE method that leverages synchrophasor measurements and a linear voltage-dependent load model for pseudo-measurements. This approach provides a more accurate representation of load response to voltage variations, yielding more realistic estimation results than methods using conventional constant active and reactive load models. © 2025 IEEE.

Social networking sites have come into demand as a way of sharing ideas and opinions with other people. But unfortunately, people tend to misuse social media to write nasty comments. Victims' lives might be negatively impacted by behaviours that are abusive and humiliating. Social networks give people a great tool to share information on ideas on multiple topics and opinions. However, these platforms are often abused to announce toxic and offensive comments, which eventually negatively affect victims and demographics. This study offers a thorough method for identifying hate speech (HS) on social media by utilising cutting-edge ML algorithms. A publicly available Twitter dataset containing 159,571 tweets classified into six categories, including toxic and identity hatred, was utilised. The methodology comprises data collection, conditioning, and categorisation that employs BiLSTM, which is particularly appropriate for the tasks demanding contextual sensitivity. These operations include symbol removing, stemming and stop-word eliminating, feature extraction using TF-IDF, and using the Bag-of-Words model. For classification of the data between hate and non-hate, the dataset is then split into training and testing datasets and the BiLSTM model used to provide classifications for the text. The evaluation of the BiLSTM model demonstrates superior performance, achieving an accuracy86%, a precision90%, a recall86%, and an F1-score88% • A comparison between the model and other models such as SVM and CNN reveals the strength of the BiLSTM in contextual classification tasks. The results demonstrate that BiLSTM can tackle problems with hate speech detection, providing a strong answer to the problem of harmful content on social media and helping to make the internet a better place for everyone.

This research examines the effectiveness of nitrogen annealing and Nafion treatment in mitigating Light and Elevated Temperature Induced Degradation (LeTID) in Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) solar cells, employing a 30-kW photovoltaic (PV) system for evaluation. As a photosensitive device, solar cells are susceptible to damage from laser irradiation, leading to reduced photoelectric conversion efficiency, structural damage, and functional loss. To minimize this loss, nitrogen annealing and Nafion treatments were applied, followed by the analysis of LeTID effects on untreated, Nafion-treated, and combined nitrogen-annealed and Nafion-treated PERC cells. Untreated cells showed an 8 % fall in open-circuit voltage (Voc) and a 7 % fill factor (FF) loss. The combined treatment (Combination of Nitrogen & Nafion Treatment) improved stability, reducing losses to 6 % in Voc and 5 % in FF. The Nafion treatment yielded the best results, limiting deterioration to 4 % in Voc and 3 % in FF. PVsyst simulations, incorporating real-world data, confirmed enhanced stability and efficiency, aiding in optimizing PV system design and maintenance. © 2025 Korean Physical Society
