Higher-order networks for Business Ecosystems Computational Modeling

Ecosystems are nowadays a dominant organizational form in the digital age. But this construct lacks consensus on its empirical scope, its key theoretical features and its theoretical roots. The paper proposes an integrative framework as well as a method and a tool for calculating an ecosystem based on simplicial complexes and the HYPE platform. It concludes that a data-driven and visualization approach is needed to the study of the dynamic, emergent and adaptive dimensions of today’s platform-based ecosystems.

With the adoption of ambitious climate action goals, the penetration level of distributed energy resources (dErs) is rapidly increasing. Microgrids are an efficient way to integrate these dErs, facilitating their operation and control. Additionally, microgrids enhance the overall resilience of the distribution system by serving critical loads both within and outside their boundaries. However, the need for substantial customized engineering leads to a high cost of development, installation and maintenance of microgrids. To address this challenge, Microgrid Building Blocks (MBB) are proposed to reduce the deployment cost of microgrids through modular, standardized design and implementation. This work presents a testbed demonstrating the integrated power conversion, control, and communication functionalities of an MBB. The testbed is formed by a real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation combined with a hardware and software prototype of MBB. The use cases supported by the MBB testbed are enumerated. The islanded operation, voltage regulation, and optimal dispatch capabilities of an MBB-based microgrid controller are validated through a case study.

This paper establishes simulation modeling for large-scale grid connected wind power with energy storage system (ESS). The conventional grid-following (GFL) based ESS is used as a reference object to test the active support performance of large-scale grid-connected wind power with grid-forming (GFM) based ESS with active support performance evaluation indices in different scenarios. (1) Small disturbance evaluation indices: The point of common coupling (PCC) frequency/voltage drop depth and recovery time. (2) Large disturbance evaluation indices: The PCC frequency/voltage drop depth and rise height after fault removal. The output active/reactive power drop depth and rise height/recovery time after fault removal. (3) Island capability evaluation indices: The PCC frequency/voltage fluctuation amplitude at the moment of switching and system stability after switching.

Adjustable Tongue Vane for Improving the Energy Performance of a Single-Channel Pump

Single-channel pumps are a type of centrifugal pump that are widely used for wastewater treatment around the world, but they often operate at low flow rates with low efficiency and loud noise because the wastewater contains many impurities. In this study, an adjustable tongue vane was developed that controls the internal flow direction in the volute to improve the energy performance of a single-channel pump. Numerical simulations were performed by using steady and unsteady reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and a shear stress transport turbulence model with reattachment modification to evaluate the energy loss inside the volute. At the best efficiency point, the model increased the efficiency and total head by 1.007% and 1.242% compared to the reference model. At low flow rates, however, the model increased the efficiency and total head by up to 25.126% and 5.604%, respectively, while decreasing the power consumption by up to 15.533% compared to the reference model. This improvement can be attributed to the adjustable tongue vane suppressing separation flow, which reduces hydraulic losses and energy dissipation inside the volute. The proposed tongue vane can be used to improve the energy performance of not only single-channel pumps but also other centrifugal turbomachinery. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

dC overvoltage occurs when short circuit fault exists at the receiving-end and is harmful to the safety of the system where wind farms are connected to the grid through high-voltage direct current (HVdC) transmission based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC). To address this issue, this paper first analyzed the mechanism of the dC overvoltage and innovatively proposed a strategy in which grid-forming-controlled wind farms are integrated into the AC grid through MMC-HVdC, whose sending-end applies grid-following control and constant dC voltage control. However, secondary dC overvoltage appears during the fault recovery stage and is mainly caused by the saturation of the PI controller of constant active power control. Simulations are carried out on a test with MATLAB/Simulink, and results verify the efficacy of the proposed methods in suppressing dC overvoltage that appeared during receiving-end faults and their recovery stage.

With the rapid proliferation of Electric Vehicles (EV s), effectively leveraging the regulation potential of EV charging loads has become a prominent issue. This paper proposes a multi-type EV schedulability modeling method based on the analysis of charging behavior characteristics of different user types. The model comprehensively considers the charging characteristics of various types of EV s, including private cars, ride-hailing vehicles, and taxis, utilizing a charging start-stop probability distribution model. Case studies demonstrate that this model can not only accurately reflect the charging demands of EV s but also provide valuable references for strategies involving EV fleet participation in grid regulation.

Open-world object detection (OWOd), as a more general and challenging goal, requires the model trained from data on known objects to detect both known and unknown objects and incrementally learn to identify these unknown objects. The existing works which employ standard detection framework and fixed pseudo-labelling mechanism $(PLM)$ have the following problems: (i) The inclusion of detecting unknown objects substantially reduces the model's ability to detect known ones. (ii) The $PLM$ does not adequately utilize the priori knowledge of inputs. (iii) The fixed selection manner of $PLM$ cannot guarantee that the model is trained in the right direction. We observe that humans subconsciously prefer to focus on all foreground objects and then identify each one in detail, rather than localize and identify a single object simultaneously, for alleviating the confusion. This motivates us to propose a novel solution called CAT: LoCalization and IdentificAtion Cascade detection Transformer which decouples the detection process via the shared decoder in the cascade decoding way. In the meanwhile, we propose the self-adaptive pseudo-labelling mechanism which combines the model-driven with input-driven $PLM$ and self-adaptively generates robust pseudo-labels for unknown objects, significantly improving the ability of CAT to retrieve unknown objects. Experiments on two benchmarks, i.e., MS-COCO and PASCAL VOC, show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. The code is publicly available at https://***/xiaomabufei/CAT.

Foot plantar force monitoring has been explored using in-shoe soft insole measurements for application in diabetic foot and to assess footwear performance. Sensors are impractical for regular use due to bulky electronics and short battery life. They typically lack shear sensing. A soft flexible and custom configurable 3-axis capacitive sensing array is demonstrated through a customizable arrangement of 16-shear and normal force taxels completely imbedded in a shoe insole that wirelessly updates at 50 $\mathrm{n}_r$ . A patterned silicone dielectric mounted on a flex printed circuit board enables normal and shear sensitivities of 19.9 and 2.8 $\text{kPa}^{-1}$ . The 20 $\text{mW}$ power consumption includes transmission of data to a nearby mobile device, which is satisfied for more than 50 hours using a built-in 350 mAh LiPo battery. Operation in a shoe is demonstrated.

Mind reasoning Manners: Enhancing Type Perception for Generalized Zero-shot Logical reasoning over Text

Logical reasoning task involves diverse types of complex reasoning over text, based on the form of multiple-choice question answering. Given the context, question and a set of options as the input, previous methods achieve superior performances on the full-data setting. However, the current benchmark dataset has the ideal assumption that the reasoning type distribution on the train split is close to the test split, which is inconsistent with many real application scenarios. To address it, there remain two problems to be studied: (1) How is the zero-shot capability of the models (train on seen types and test on unseen types)? (2) How to enhance the perception of reasoning types for the models? For problem 1, we propose a new benchmark for generalized zero-shot logical reasoning, named ZsLr. It includes six splits based on the three type sampling strategies. For problem 2, a type-aware model TaCo is proposed. It utilizes both the heuristic input reconstruction and the contrastive learning to improve the type perception in the global representation. Extensive experiments on both the zero-shot and full-data settings prove the superiority of TaCo over the state-of-the-art methods. Also, we experiment and verify the generalization capability of TaCo on other logical reasoning dataset. © 2023, CC BY.
