This is a high level computer vision paper, which employs concepts from Natural Language Understanding in solving the video retrieval problem. Our main contribution is the utilization of the semantic word similarity measures (Lin and PMI-Ir similarities) for video retrieval. In our approach, we use trained concept detectors, and the visual co-occurrence relations between such concepts. We propose two methods for content-based retrieval of videos: (1) A method for retrieving a new concept (a concept which is not known to the system, and no annotation is available) using semantic word similarity and visual co-occurrence. (2) A method for retrieval of videos based on their relevance to a user defined text query using the semantic word similarity and visual content of videos. For evaluation purposes, we have mainly used the automatic search and the high level feature extraction test set of TrECVId'06 benchmark, and the automatic search test set of TrECVId'07. These two data sets consist of 250 hours of multilingual news video captured from American, Arabic, German and Chinese TV channels. Although our method for retrieving a new concept is an unsupervised method, it outperforms the trained concept detectors (which are supervised) on 7 out of 20 test concepts, and overall it performs very close to the trained detectors. On the other hand, our visual content based semantic retrieval method performs 81% better than the text-based retrieval method. This shows that using visual content alone we can obtain significantly good retrieval results.

H.264/AVC media stream transmission is an important application in wireless network, but wireless network is an open network, the media security must be considered. The encryption approach which is used commonly for encryption of H.263/MPEG-4 stream can not be used for H.264/AVC's directly, because the H.264/AVC stream data format is different from H.263/MPEG-4. Base on residual block spatial scrambling, a format-compliant, real-time and keep-length algorithm for H.264/AVC stream encryption is proposed. In the algorithm, the residual blocks are categorized into different groups and each residual block group uses different random shuffling table. The experimental results show that H.264/AVC video stream could be encrypted in real-time while the format is kept compliant, and the length of ciphertext is as same as the plaintext. So the proposed scheme is suitable for transmitting encrypted H.264/AVC stream through wireless network and can guarantee the security of the network.

Automatic service and application deployment and management is becoming possible through the use of service and infrastructure discovery and policy systems. But using the infrastructure optimally requires intimate knowledge of the hardware and the interaction of its components in order to make optimal allocation of shared resources. This paper proposes an architecture where the hardware infrastructure not only makes operational parameters available (disk size, network bandwidth) but also presents to the service management components, relationships and constraints between the hardware components. We present an implementation which uses the Service Modeling Language, SML, to communicate this information and show how this architecture saves service management from knowing intimate knowledge of the hardware. This enhances optimal service deployment and management in a heterogeneous hardware environment and is a step toward autonomic computing.

recently, combining a video recording of a presentation along with the digital slides used in it has become popular in e-learning and presentation of archives. For users of the archives, it is useful to preview a digest of such content to grasp the atmosphere and/or an outline of the presentation. This paper proposes a method of automatic digest generation by extracting important scenes from the presentation content. The extracted scenes are chosen based on several factors such as frequency and specificity of words, scene duration and order. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods are evaluated by comparing with testers' answer sets for actual lectures.

In this paper, we propose two novel methods for arbitrary listening-point generation for 3d audio-video (3dAV) integration in a large-scale multipoint cameras and microphones system with abilities to process, and display information of any recorded 3d scene in realtime. With this system, users are able to control their own viewpoint/listening-point position, freely. Arbitrary listening-point can be generated by either (i) ray-space representation of sound wave field (i.e. source sound independent) for multi frequency layers, or (ii) acoustic transfer function estimation (i.e. source sound dependent) and blind separation of sources of sounds. Arbitrary viewpoint generation is based on ray-space method, which is enhanced by using multipass dynamic programming for geometry compensation. Integration is done by either (i) ray-space representation of sound wave and image together, or (ii) integrating each camera video signal and acoustic transfer function of the same location as integrated 3dAV data. The prototype system of integrated audio-visual viewer achieves both good image and sound qualities with 15 frames/second.

A novel track-and-hold (T&H) employing an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) with two cross-coupled differential pairs (CCdPs) is proposed for high-accuracy and high-frequency applications. The T&H has a simple architecture requiring smaller capacitors and fewer switches and offers higher speed, lower distortion, and lower power dissipation than its op-amp based counterparts. The chip implemented in 0.18 um CMOS process operates from a single 1.8 V supply and achieves more than 10-bits precision for sampling rate in excess of 120 MS/s.

It is now widely believed that Flexray will emerge as the predominant protocol for in-vehicle automotive communication systems. As a result, there has been a lot of recent interest in timing and predictability analysis techniques that are specifically targeted towards Flexray. In this paper we propose a compositional performance analysis framework for a network of electronic control units (ECUs) that communicate via a Flexray bus. Given a specification of the tasks running on the different ECUs, the scheduling policy used at each ECU, and a specification of the Flexray bus (e.g. slot sizes and message priorities), our framework can answer questions related to the maximum end-to-end delay experienced by any message, the amount of buffer required at each communication controller and the utilization of the different ECUs and the bus. In contrast to previous timing analysis techniques which analyze the Flexray bus in isolation, our framework is fully compositional and allows the modeling of the schedulers at the ECUs and the Flexray protocol in a seamless manner. As a result, it can be used to analyze large systems and does not involve any computationally expensive step like solving an ILP (which previous approaches require). We illustrate our framework using detailed examples and also present results from a Matlab-based implementation.

An optimal control method for two-dimensional (2-d) linear systems with variable coefficients and free boundary conditions in roesser's model is proposed in this paper. Based on roesser's model, an equivalent general 1-d model of the 2-d system is presented, and the problem of minimizing a 2-d linear quadratic (LQ) cost function is solved for the case where complete state information is available. The solution is obtained by using the proposed dynamic programming in 1-d descriptor form to solve the riccati equation and then arriving at the optimal control law and minimum cost. The proposed control methodology can be applied to discrete-time models of systems described by partial differential equations and can also be used in the field of signal processing.

We consider a inter-vehicular communication scenario with vehicles moving along a highway. The vehicles are equipped with radio devices and can communicate among themselves. We study the problem of reliable multihop broadcasting in such a scenario. We propose two broadcasting algorithms -grid based multihop broadcast (GBMB) and controlled flooding (CF). Controlled flooding is derived from classical flooding. Grid based multihop broadcasting is a simple grid based multihop scheme that adds reliability as well as increases throughput by reducing collisions. We have shown through simulations that our proposed protocols have high reliability and yield efficient channel utilization when compared to Flooding, Probabilistic Flooding and Area Based Protocols in scenarios where the channel is lossy.

To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42 V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VrLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VrLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.
