In high-speed digital printed circuit board (PCB), the ground guard fence is often used to reduce the radiated emission and the crosstalk. Moreover, it is quite useful for the presence of the ground slot under the signal trace to avoid the reflection and the radiated emission. In this paper, the effects of the guard fence are studied by experimental measurement and numerical electromagnetic simulation. It is found that the ground guard fence acts efficiently as the shielding wall against the signal trace, which results in the significant reduction of the radiated emission. Also, its inherent low radiation property works well at presence of the ground slot under the signal trace.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of MT-based Japanese-English CLIr using a subcollection of the TrEC test collections and two bilingual researchers to separately translate the TrEC requests into Japanese. Our main findings are as follows: (1)With the aid of pseudo-relevance feedback, MT-based J-E CLIr can be as effective as “best-case” monolingual Ir. In particular, although poor MT quality often leads to poor initial CLIr performance, pseudo-relevance feedback is useful for alleviating the harm; (2)The manual request translation process that is inherent in conventional CLIr performance evaluation can be a more dominant factor than query length and overall MT quality.

The electric power systems of ships supply energy to sophisticated systems for weapons, communications, navigation and operation. In this new era of the US Navy with goals to reduce manning and increase system survivability, automatic reconfiguration of the electrical network in a shipboard power system is critical for quickly restoring service to a section of the power system to survive battle damage. Also, reconfiguration is critical to meet operational requirements such as changing from one mission to another, avoiding possible overloading of the system or removing equipment for maintenance. In this paper, a general reconfiguration methodology, using heuristics, is presented that will reconfigure a given set of loads, satisfying the operational requirements and priorities of loads. The proposed method is illustrated with an example on a large shipboard power system that is based on the actual surface combatant ship.

Embedded memory logic (EML) is already studied for a possible solution to the system on a chip. Several different architectures are reported for maximal utilization of memory bandwidth between processor and memory. The one-dimensional processor and memory array has been applied to image processing or 2d graphics. Two-dimensional array architecture, however, is well matched to 3d graphic rendering application because basic primitives of 3d graphics such as triangles or rectangles have 2-dimensional spatial locality on the screen and they can be concurrently processed using a 2-dimensional array architecture. This 3d graphic rendering engine based on the 2d array embedded memory logic has 8 edge processors (EP), 64 pixel processors (PP), 64 frame buffers (FB) and 64 serial access memories (SAM) on the same chip. Its 3d operations include the Gouraud shading, alpha blending, depth comparison and double buffering.

In plasma processing systems for large sized wafer, quick evacuation of reaction gas by making the process space gap narrow is required to realize higher productivity and better quality of microelectronic devices. The wafer must be placed closely to the antenna aperture in this case. A radial line slot antenna (rLSA) for surface wave coupled plasma (SWP) is a promising candidate to this end. A novel slot arrangement in the aperture, which consists of densely arrayed transverse slots, was fabricated and tested. A uniform, high electron density of 3/spl times/10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/ and large-area plasma under the condition of low electron temperature has already been realized by experiments. It dispenses with dC magnetic fields required in ECr systems. For further development of slot design as well as the mechanism extraction of plasma generation, this paper evaluates the electromagnetic near fields of SWP rLSAs. As the first step, antennas in free space without the plasma as well as the glass vacuum window, is analyzed using the periodic array model. The predicted near field distribution is compared with the experiments and reasonable agreement is reported.

As networks move toward advanced intelligent networks (IN), a greater variety of services could be provided, causing increment of the number of their users. Moreover, owing to the development of wireless networks, the number of mobile subscribers is increasing, too. We design the enhanced queue management logic for the wired service subscribers as well as the wireless service subscribers, which includes the dynamic queue management mechanism to increase call completion rates taking account of their mobility characteristics. We apply the parallel server queuing model on the logic to dynamically manage the queue size according to each subscriber's service drop rate.

In this paper, a new type of gearless traction machine drive system with a permanent-magnet (PM) motor for high speed elevators is presented. This application of a PM motor to the elevator traction machine enables several improvements including higher efficiency, greater ride comfort, and miniaturization and so on. A voltage-fed 3-phase PWM rectifier is also adopted so that dC bus voltage regulation, bi-directional power flow and controllable power factor with reduced input current harmonics are possible. To guarantee reliability of the whole system, the rC terminator at the motor side is designed for decreasing d/spl nu//dt ratio at motor terminal and then preventing insulation failure of the motor. Some experimental results of 240 m/min operation are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The charge pump power factor correction (CPPFC) electronic ballast circuit has become an attractive topological family for ballasting fluorescent lamps because it employs a charging capacitor instead of bulky inductor to implement the power factor correction (PFC). Several topologies have been previously proposed. Based on the different mechanism to achieve PFC, three types, namely, voltage source type CPPFC (VS-CPPFC), current source type CPPFC (CS-CPPFC), and combined voltage source and current source type CPPFC (VSCS-CPPFC) electronic ballast can be classified. These three types of CPPFC electronic ballast have different electrical characteristics, such as different start-up bus voltages, etc. Mathematical analysis is given in this paper based on the study of six typical CPPFC electronic ballast circuits. Then a comparison among these circuits in terms of power factor, dC bus voltage stress at preheat, start-up, and steady state modes, current stress at steady state, and lamp current crest factor is presented. The experimental results are provided for verification.

An 800-MHz CdMA-based fiber-optic microcellular system has ban developed. This system is implemented on the optical passive double star network using subcarrier multiplexing and subcarrier multiple access techniques. We utilized intermediate frequencies to access each micro base-station. A bi-directional transmission was achieved by using a 1.55-/spl mu/m dFB laser for the forward link and 1.3-/spl mu/m LEds for the reverse link. The result confirms that this system is effective not only for implementing microcellular systems, but also for covering the radio-blind areas such as inside of buildings and underground shopping malls.
