Purpose - This paper presents and investigates a method named M×N-ary chaotic pulse-width-position modulation (CPWPM) which is based on the combination of M-ary chaotic pulse-position modulation (CPPM) and N-ary chaotic pulse-width modulation (CPWM) in order to provide a better performance in noise-affected environments as well as improve significantly bit rate. Design/methodology/approach - Analysis of schemes for modulator and demodulator are presented in detail through describing the schemes of the individual methods and their combination. Theoretical evaluation of bit-error rate (BER) performance in presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is provided. Chaotic behavior with tent map in variation of modulation parameters is also investigated. In order to verify the theoretical analyses, numerical simulations are carried out and their results are reported. Findings - Both evaluation and simulation results show that when the number of symbols increases, the bit rate is improved significantly but the BER performance is just slightly worse. This makes M×N-ary CPWPM become an effective method for chaos-based digital communication. Originality/value - Although CPPM, CPWM and M-ary modulation methods have been described in the literature separately, their combination is presented and investigated for the first time in this paper. © Emerald group Publishing Limited.

We describe an indoor localization technique for smart phones. Our new method, called the Frequency Division Multiplexing Phase Accordance Method (FDM-PAM), uses a beat called a sync pattern composed of a pair of sinusoidal waves with slightly different frequencies, which is similar to our original ultrasound ranging technique called the Phase Accordance Method (PAM). By generating multiple sync patterns with different central frequencies and transmitting them from different speakers, FDM-PAM conducts time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) multilateration for localizing smart phones. In the current implementation of FDM-PAM, the 2D indoor position of a smart phone can be estimated. Three sync patterns are generated by using two out of six sinusoidal waves with frequencies ranging from 14.75 kHz to 17.25 kHz. The transmission of the sync pattern from the speakers lasts 4 ms. Through experiments, we have confirmed that FDM-PAM achieves accuracy of around 10 cm using only a short burst transmission, which indicates that the localization technique is sufficiently rapid and accurate.

Scalable video coding is a recent extension of the advanced video coding H.264/AVC standard developed jointly by ISO/IEC and ITU-T, which allows adapting the bitstream easily by dropping parts of it named layers. This adaptation makes it possible for a single bitstream to meet the requirements for reliable delivery of video to diverse clients over heterogeneous networks using temporal, spatial or quality scalability, combined or separately. Since the scalable video coding design requires scalability to be provided at the encoder side, existing content cannot benefit from it. Efficient techniques for converting contents without scalability to a scalable format are desirable. In this paper, an approach for temporal scalability transcoding from H.264/AVC to scalable video coding in baseline and main profile is presented and the impact of the GOP size is analyzed. Independently of the GOP size chosen, time savings of around 63 % for baseline profile and 60 % for main profile are achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Production speed and energy efficiency are crucial factors for any application scenario in industrial robotics. The most important factor for this is planning of an optimized sequence of atomic subtasks. In a welding scenario, an atomic subtask could be understood as a single welding seam/spot while the sequence could be the ordering of these atomic tasks. Optimization of a task sequence is normally modeled as the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). This works well for simple scenarios with atomic tasks without execution freedom like spot welding. However, many types of tasks allow a certain freedom of execution. A simple example is seam welding of a closed-contour, where typically the starting-ending point is not specified by the application. This extra degree of freedom allows for much more efficient task sequencing. In this paper, we describe an extension of TSP to model a problem of finding an optimal sequence of tasks with such extra degree of freedom. We propose a new, efficient heuristic to solve such problems and show its applicability. Obtained computational results are close to the optimum on small instances and outperforms the state of the art approaches on benchmarks available in literature.

One difficulty facing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service providers is the issue of monitoring and managing their service delivery network. An in-depth monitoring regime is required, which performs measurements within different networking devices. When network conditions deteriorate to the point where they could disrupt IPTV services, Network Operators (NOs) can use the measurements as a basis to reconfigure the network with minimal delay. OpenFlow (OF) presents a potential solution to this problem as it provides vendor-neutral access to the packet forwarding interface of the different hardware device types. This work investigates how OF can leverage video packet inspection measurements taken from within the IPTV service delivery network and combine these with OF statistics to make decisions regarding routing in order to assure service quality.

The current many-core architectures are generally evaluated using cycle-accurate simulations. However these detailed simulations of the architecture make the evaluation of large programs very slow. Since the focus in many-core architecture is shifting from the performance of individual cores to the overall behavior of the chip, high-level simulations are becoming necessary, which evaluate the same architecture at less detailed level and allow the designer to make quick and reasonably accurate design decisions. We have developed a high-level simulator for the design space exploration of the Microgrid, which is a many-core architecture comprised of many fine-grained multi-threaded cores. This simulator allows us to investigate mapping and scheduling strategies of families (i.e. groups of threads) in developing an operating environment for the Microgrid. The previous method to count and evaluate the workload in basic blocks was not accurate enough. The key problem was that with many concurrent threads the latency of certain instructions is hidden because of the multi-threaded nature of the core. This paper presents a technique to determine the execution time of different types of instructions with thread concurrency. We believe to achieve high accuracy in evaluating programs in the high-level simulator. Copyright 2012 ACM.

In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.

Recently, the authors described a new algorithm for ultrasonic Doppler imaging and velocity estimation using log-step multicarrier signals. The algorithm achieved a velocity estimation precision that was some 20 times better than that using an existing method, but the problem of estimation deficiency in low-SNR conditions remained. In this work, we improve the availability of the algorithm in low-SNR conditions by utilizing the systematic temporal shift of the log-step multicarrier signals, which expresses approximately the amount of Doppler shift in the sensed signal. A computer simulation shows high availability for the algorithm, even for SNR values below -10 dB.

System-level design space exploration (DSE), which is performed early in the design process, is of eminent importance to the design of complex multi-processor embedded system architectures. During system-level DSE, system parameters like, e.g., the number and type of processors, the type and size of memories, or the mapping of application tasks to architectural resources, are considered. Simulation-based DSE, in which different design instances are evaluated using system-level simulations, typically are computationally costly. Even using high-level simulations and efficient exploration algorithms, the simulation time to evaluate design points forms a real bottleneck in such DSE. Therefore, the vast design space that needs to be searched requires effective design space pruning techniques. This paper presents a technique to reduce the number of simulations needed during system-level DSE. More specifically, we propose an iterative design space pruning methodology based on static throughput analysis of different application mappings. By interleaving these analytical throughput estimations with simulations, our hybrid approach can significantly reduce the number of simulations that are needed during the process of DSE.
