This paper presents a framework for high-level power estimation of multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) architectures on FPGA. The technique is based on abstract execution profiles, called event signatures, and it operates at a higher level of abstraction than, e.g., commonly-used instruction-set simulator (ISS) based power estimation methods and should thus be capable of achieving good evaluation performance. As a consequence, the technique can be very useful in the context of early system-level design space exploration. We integrated the power estimation technique in a system-level MPSoC synthesis framework. Subsequently, using this framework, we designed a range of different candidate architectures which contain different numbers of Microblaze processors and compared our power estimation results to those from real measurements on a Virtex-6 FPGA board. © 2011 IEEE.

Future planetary exploration missions demand significant advances in on-board computing capabilities over current avionics architectures based on a single-core processing element. The state-of-the-art multi-core processor provides much promise in meeting such challenges while introducing new fault tolerance problems when applied to space missions. Software-based schemes are being presented in this paper that can achieve system-level fault mitigation beyond that provided by radiation-hard-by-design (RHBD). For mission and time critical applications such as the Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) for planetary or small body navigation, and landing, a range of fault tolerance methods can be adapted by the application. The software methods being investigated include Error Correction Code (ECC) for data packet routing between cores, virtual network routing, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR), and Algorithm-Based Fault Tolerance (ABFT). A robust fault tolerance framework that provides fail-operational behavior under hard real-time constraints and graceful degradation will be demonstrated using TRN executing on a commercial Tilera® processor with simulated fault injections. © 2012 by the American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

VMODEX is an interactive visualization tool to support system-level Design Space Exploration (DSE) of MPSoC architectures. It was initially developed to help designers to get insight into the search process of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) that are typically used in the DSE process, and facilitates the analysis of the DSE results. In this paper, we extend VMODEX to help algorithm developers as well. Since there are many different MOEAs to search a design space and there is no conclusive answer regarding which algorithm is the best for a specific problem, finding the best optimization algorithm is a big challenge. However, using VMODEX, algorithm developers can easily evaluate and compare the results of different searching algorithms, for a given problem, with respect to their efficiency and effectiveness, in order to find the best optimization algorithm. Then, the best optimization results are delivered to the designers for analyzing the design space exploration process. © 2011 IEEE.

Accurate lane recognition for moving vehicles is important for lane keeping and lane changing assistance systems. Additionally, this information could be leveraged by Intelligent Transportation systems to suggest lane changes for improved traffic load balancing across lanes. This paper presents a position estimation algorithm for moving vehicles based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) active sensors placed on roadsides and lane boundaries, and multiple on-car RFID receiver antennas. To improve localization accuracy, the algorithm proposes two novel ideas: (1) compute pair-wise position estimates using the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) of all pairs of signals received from RFIDs, and (2) compute the final position as a weighted average of these pair-wise estimates using a dynamic weighting function that assigns higher weights to positions estimated based on closer RFIDs. The results from our field experiments indicate that the proposed method achieves 0.7-meter localization accuracy when RFIDs are placed at 0.5-meter intervals and a vehicle has 8 antennas. This accuracy allows a moving vehicle to recognize which lane it is in. The localization accuracy of the proposed method was found to be mostly stable for any type of road shape and any number of lanes. A further 14% accuracy improvement is achieved when RFIDs are placed at 0.25-meter intervals and the RFIDs located farther than 30-meter are excluded from computation.

The Sesame system-level simulation framework targets efficient design space exploration of embedded multimedia systems. Even despite Sesame's high efficiency, it would still fail to explore large parts of the design space simply because system-level simulation is too slow for this. Therefore, Sesame uses analytical performance models to provide steering to the system-level simulation, guiding it toward promising system architectures and thus pruning the design space. In this paper, we present a mechanism based on execution profiles, referred to as signatures, to calibrate these analytical models with the aim to deliver trustworthy estimates. Moreover, we also present a number of experiments in which we evaluate the accuracy of our signature-based performance models using a case study with a Motion-JPEG encoder and the Mediabench benchmark suite for performing off-line calibration of the models. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Current trends show a growing number of femtocell deployments, this in turn will lead to increased volumes of voice traffic being transmitted through fixed broadband access networks such as Digital Subscriber Line. In this paper the issue of maintaining call quality through the resource constraint expedited forwarding queue of DSLAMs is investigated. A quality based Call Admission Control and resource allocation mechanism is provided to avoid resource overloading and call quality degradation. The ITU-T's E-Model is used for call quality monitoring and a message exchange interface between the mobile and fixed networks which allows dynamic adjustment to network resources is described and simulated. The results show that high voice call quality can be maintained.

The paper investigates the effects of a robot's "on-line" feedback during a tutoring situation with a human tutor. Analysis is based on a study conducted with an iCub robot that autonomously generates its feedback (gaze, pointing gesture) based on the system's perception of the tutor's actions using the idea of reciprocity of actions. Sequential micro-analysis of two opposite cases reveals how the robot's behavior (responsive vs. non-responsive) pro-actively shapes the tutor's conduct and thus co-produces the way in which it is being tutored. A dialogic and a monologic tutoring style are distinguished. The first 20 seconds of an encounter are found to shape the user's perception and expectations of the system's competences and lead to a relatively stable tutoring style even if the robot's reactivity and appropriateness of feedback changes.

Online shopping has developed to a stage where catalogs have become very large and diverse. Thus, it is a challenge to present relevant items to potential customers within a very few interactions. This is even more so when users have no defined shopping objectives but operate in an opportunistic mindset. This problem is often tackled by recommender systems. However, these systems rely on consistent user interaction patterns to predict items of interest. In contrast, we propose to adapt the classical information retrieval (IR) paradigm for the purpose of accessing catalog items in a context of un-predictable user interaction. Accordingly, we present a novel information access strategy based on the notion of interest rather than relevance. We detail the design of a scalable browsing system including learning capabilities joint with a limited-memory model. Our approach enables locating interesting items within a few steps while not requiring good quality descriptions. Our system allows customer to seamlessly change browsing objectives without having to start explicitly a new session. An evaluation of our approach based on both artificial and real-life datasets demonstrates its efficiency in learning and adaptation.

In wireless mesh networks (WMN), most routing algorithms apply broadcasting at some stage of the path discovery process. They thereby consume large chunks of the network throughput. Intelligent rebroadcast algorithms aim to reduce this overhead by calculating the usefulness of a rebroadcast and the likelihood of collisions. Unfortunately, this introduces latency and breaks the rebroadcast chain, resulting in reduced reachability. In this paper we present our Social-aware Routing Protocol with Parallel Collision Guidance Broadcasting for WMN (SCG). It reduces rebroadcasting without a loss in reachability and without a significant increase in latency. Our claims are validated through simulations comparing our algorithm with existing protocols.

Environmental sustainability issues and the costs of new power generation and transmission have increased the interest in evolving current power grid to new technologies. The Smart Grid is a promising technology, since it allows a distributed computing approach with potentials for self-diagnosing/-healing, reliable multi-user communication and fast hard real-time control. However, the missing standardization associated with heterogeneity of legacy systems and wide-area service demands, makes very challenging to adopt Smart Grid in a cost-effective way. By considering this, we propose the Session-Oriented Communication System (SOCSys) to overcome the above issues by enhancing Smart Grid with truly reliable and robust capabilities over heterogeneous environments. SOCSys achieves this goal by orchestrating session-control with innovative network-centric facilities operating over a wireless mesh Information Network compliant with IEEE 802.11e/s standard. The simulation results show that SOCSys improved network performance in terms of bandwidth utilization and minimization of delay, while consuming low network resources. Graphical analyses showed that SOCSys supported multimedia sessions with excellent quality, where it outperforms the experiments with regular settings.
