Paving the way for the future of Short Sea Shipping: The MOSES project

As the European Union (EU) has aimed for a modal shift from road transport to other more sustainable transport modes, such as rail or waterborne transport, Short Sea Shipping (SSS) has gained more attention. In order to provide an overview of SSS component in the European supply chain, the current status, established networks and legislative drivers for its promotion are analyzed, as well as relevant shortcomings and potential market opportunities. In parallel, the contribution of MOSES project to SSS is examined, through the development of innovative solutions aiming to address the vulnerabilities and strains related to the operation of large containerships and the engagement of port community stakeholders. Finally, associated business cases are presented, along with the expected results of MOSES project and the foreseen benefits towards SSS promotion and enhancement.

Geothermal reservoirs refer to any heat stored, naturally, in the earth’s crust;it is considered as resource coming from a natural complex depending on the geological, geophysical aspect and territories geochemistry. Although this natural resource remains distinguished by his characters to be a renewable, ecological, universal and sustainable mining energy, it stills not, yet, sufficiently exploitable worldwide (El Bouazouli et al., 2020). The same finding was brought up in Moroccan context, despite the presence of some hot resources and capitalizable scientific research to develop this potential. Prospecting for underground geothermal resources is an expensive project that deserves to mobilize scientific and technical methods in order to overcome this risky impasse. Thus, Geomatics has been used, drawing on Remote Sensing for geo-spatial exploration in order to guide prospecting through the development of geothermal deposits potential maps at very low and medium depth on Moroccan territories (El Bouazouli et al., 2019). Furthermore, we explore smart tools to support short and long-term decision-making in terms of creating of clean energy mix and complementary mining energy as well as investment in energy exploration operations. And, as an experiment, we chose for this study, areas distributed mainly in the Moroccan Sahara and the Souss Massa Region, known, probably, by a potentially high geothermal gradient, and therefore constituting geothermal energy reservoirs. As for the exploration methodology adopted, it consists in processing of the imageries: LANDSAT 8, MODIS AND ASTER, in order to extract exploitation indices such as the surface temperature, the layer of lineaments and cracks density, and evidence of hydrothermal alteration that may indicate geothermal activity. The correlation between these three factors, will lead us to conclude that the Moroccan Sahara area is considered as one of the most potential geothermal reservoir areas in Morocco. In short, the a

The transition of healthcare towards digitalization is closely related to the advancement of health-related technologies, including wearable sensors and edge computing. In this paper, we present VersaSens, a versatile and customizable platform concept and its real implementation as a tool to boost research in wearable sensors. The platform embodies the core attributes of the VersaSens concept: versatility, flexibility, and extendability across multiple aspects of hardware, software, and processing components. It features a modular design, consisting of sensor, processor, and co-processor modules, allowing for various configurations. To evaluate the efficiency of the platform, we tested three use cases: cough monitoring, heartbeat classification and epileptic seizure detection. In all cases, the results indicate that the platform effectively executes the applications, achieving low energy consumption. In particular, our findings indicates that the integration of a domain-specific edge-AI co-processor [i.e., HEEP ocrates (Machetti et al., 2024)] equipped with several hardware accelerators further improved the overall execution time and energy consumption of the system. These results demonstrate the potential of VersaSens to effectively support a diverse range of edge-AI applications and configurations, thereby providing a robust foundation for the research and development of novel smart wearable sensor systems.

We propose DC-store, a storage framework that offers deterministic I/O performance for a multi-container execution environment. DC-store's hardware-level design implements multiple NVM sets on a shared storage pool, each providing a deterministic SSD access time by removing internal resource conflicts. In parallel, software support of DC-Store is aware of the NVM sets and enlightens Linux kernel to isolate noisy neighbor containers, performing page frame reclaiming, from peers. We prototype both hardware and software counterparts of DC-Store and evaluate them in a real system. The evaluation results demonstrate that containerized data-intensive applications on DC-Store exhibit 31% shorter average execution time, on average, compared to those on a baseline system. Photovoltaic (PV) generation is a critical component of microgrids, but its accurate modeling is challenging due to the complex and dynamic interactions between solar irradiance, temperature, and PV system installation. This paper develops a multilayer perceptron (MLP) model that inputs solar irradiance and temperature to estimate the PV generation, and it compares the proposed data-driven model’s performance to two well-known physical models: the single-diode model and the inverter model. The results demonstrate that all the models can reach high levels of accuracy. However, the MLP model outperforms the physical models on average by 4.5 to 6.6 percent in R squared scores and 220 to 290 Watts in RMSE scores, and it does not require physical system parameters. Moreover, the data-driven model can overcome the limitations of the lack of real-time PV generation data.

Modern user-facing applications deployed in data-centers use a distributed system architecture that exacerbates the latency requirements of their constituent microservices (30--250μs). Existing CPU power-saving techniques degrade the performance of these applications due to the long transition latency (order of 100μs) to wake up from a deep CPU idle state (C-state). For this reason, server vendors recommend only enabling shallow core C-states (e.g., CC1) for idle CPU cores, thus preventing the system from entering deep package C-states (e.g., PC6) when all CPU cores are idle. This choice, however, impairs server energy proportionality since power-hungry resources (e.g., IOs, uncore, DRAM) remain active even when there is no active core to use them. As we show, it is common for all cores to be idle due to the low average utilization (e.g., 5 -- 20%) of datacenter servers running user-facing *** propose to reap this opportunity with AgilePkgC (APC), a new package C-state architecture that improves the energy proportionality of server processors running latency-critical applications. APC implements PC1A (package C1 agile), a new deep package C-state that a system can enter once all cores are in a shallow C-state (i.e., CC1) and has a nanosecond-scale transition latency. PC1A is based on four key techniques. First, a hardware-based agile power management unit (APMU) rapidly detects when all cores enter a shallow core C-state (CC1) and triggers the system-level power savings control flow. Second, an IO Standby Mode (IOSM) places IO interfaces (e.g., PCIe, DMI, UPI, DRAM) in shallow (nanosecond-scale transition latency) low-power modes. Third, a CLM Retention (CLMR) mode rapidly reduces the CLM (Cache-and-home-agent, Last-level-cache, and Mesh network-on-chip) domain's voltage to its retention level, drastically reducing its power consumption. NVMe is designed to unshackle flash from a traditional storage bus by allowing hosts to employ many threads to achieve higher bandwidth. While NVMe enables users to fully exploit all levels of parallelism offered by modern SSDs, current firmware designs are not scalable and have difficulty in handling a large number of I/O requests in parallel due to its limited computation power and many hardware contentions. We propose DeepFlash, a novel manycore-based storage platform that can process more than a million I/O requests in a second (1MIOPS) while hiding long latencies imposed by its internal flash media. Inspired by a parallel data analysis system, we design the firmware based on many-to-many threading model that can be scaled horizontally. The proposed DeepFlash can extract the maximum performance of the underlying flash memory complex by concurrently executing multiple firmware components across many cores within the device. To show its extreme parallel scalability, we implement DeepFlash on a many-core prototype processor that employs dozens of lightweight cores, analyze new challenges from parallel I/O processing and address the challenges by applying concurrency-aware optimizations. Our comprehensive evaluation reveals that DeepFlash can serve around 4.5 GB/s, while minimizing the CPU demand on microbenchmarks and real server workloads. As the size of datasets and neural network models increases, automatic parallelization methods for models have become a research hotspot in recent years. The existing auto-parallel methods based on machine learning or graph algorithms still have issues with search efficiency and applicability. This paper proposes an automatic parallel method based on a dual-population genetic algorithm, TGA, which transforms model partitioning and placement into an integer linear programming problem and constructs a cost model to evaluate the solution. The solution space is built using the neural network's dataflow graph and device cluster's topology, and the dual-population genetic algorithm is used to search for the optimal model parallel strategy. Experiments with various models show that the proposed method can improve single-step execution time by up to 42% compared to the Baechi method and up to 37.7% compared to the Hierarchical method. © 2023 IEEE.

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) plays a crucial role in the design and analysis of complex systems, with the Discrete EVent System specification (DEVS) formalism being a widely adopted mathematical framework. This paper introduces xDEVS no_std, the first version of xDEVS written in the Rust programming language’s no_std environment. Rust’s features, including a data ownership mechanism, enable the development of high-performance, memory-safe simulations. xDEVS no_std focuses on Real-Time (RT) simulation for safety-critical embedded applications, leveraging Rust’s abstractions to simplify code sharing and cross-compilation. The paper outlines the implementation design and Application Programming Interface (API), which facilitates the creation of both atomic and coupled DEVS models. The RT simulator integrates with hardware, handling external interrupts and enabling interactions with the embedded system. A use case on a RISC-V microcontroller demonstrates xDEVS no_std’s capabilities, illustrating how it can effectively orchestrate tasks of Cyber-Physical System (CPS) on embedded platforms.
